Farm City SupplyYour one-stop shop for gifts

BY CARRIE MCDERMOTT • DAILY NEWS [email protected]

Farm City Supply carries many supplies for their farm customers, but also has full electrical, plumb-ing and hardware departments. Heavy, insulated work clothes and work boots are available, as are houseware items and small appliances. But the big-gest draw during the holidays is the farm toys.

Manager/owner Kelly Voss, whose family has owned the business since 1989, said the toys are a real popular item this time of year, and his inven-tory includes a line of steel Tonka trucks, John Deere tractors — some with lights and sounds — Case farm equipment and more.

“We’ve got a lot of construction toys — the pay loaders, excavators, bulldozers, things like that,

Borchert also showed that Smirnoff vodka is producing many new flavored liquors such as “Iced Cake,” for the holiday season. Borchert said that the vodka tastes just like a slice of white cake.

For the rum selection, Borchert explained that getting a gift really de-pends on the person’s “taste and style.” He said that the best selling rum was Captain Morgan, but that the liquor store had a wide selection with many other great rums from other brands as well.

As the days move for-ward deeper into winter and closer to the holi-

days, Borchert said that the store will be getting shipments of pre-mixed holiday drinks for people to make fast, tasty bever-ages. The store is located right next to the Econo Foods grocery store and can be reached at 701-642-2469.

too,” he said. “We also do the Breyer horses. It’s a collectible play horse, that are resin models. They’re very realistic.”

New models are released each year, he said, especially if a particular breed has been in the news or in movies.

Classic games and puzzles are of-fered, as well as children’s bicycles and tot tractors.

In addition to toys, the store carries a large selection of Christmas decor.

“We have over 30 artificial trees on display this year,” he said. “Everything from the little 18-inch up to 9-foot. The majority are pre-lit. We pride ourselves on trying to stock good, quality trees.”

Whether you like Douglas fir or Bax-ter pine, flocked or even unusual colors like red or lime green, Farm City Sup-ply should have what you need. There are even a few pre-lit holiday palm trees for those wishing for a warm, is-land Christmas.

String lights, outdoor yard decora-tions, gift wrap and some tree decora-tions are available. A variety of nativi-ty scenes line shelves alongside lighted table-top trees and other decor.

Every holiday season the store gets in a few hundred pounds of salted in-shell peanuts that the staff bags up for cus-tomers, as well.

“If you need a knick-knack, we’ve got it,” Kill said. “People come in and say they have too many of these things and walk out with four more. You can never have too many knickknacks.”

The family-run business incorporates everyone. Kill’s wife Tina is another bright, smiling face behind the counter and his two daughters, Stevie, 17, and Samantha, 10, also have duties to keep the busi-ness flowing smoothly. Thrifty Treasures is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon-day through Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

“Christmas is coming and I think we have a lot of great holiday ideas that

won’t break the bank,” Kill said. “I know there are plenty of grandpar-ents who want to get the grandkids something, but when you’re living on Social Security like many are, it’s tough. I want to make sure you get something nice to give somebody. For the same $20 here you can get a lot more than you would say a big store in the mall.”

ROBYN ROHDE • DAILY NEWS

A new business opened in Lidger-wood called Thrifty Treasures. It has gently-used and new items on hand. There are lots of great Christmas items that owner Ron Kill said won’t ‘break the bank.’ It is located near Popp Bind-ing and Laminating in Lidgerwood, on Wiley Avenue.

Econo Wine& Spirits – Has got you covered

BY MATTHEW LIEDKE • DAILY NEWS [email protected]

The Holidays are coming fast and whether you want to get the perfect gift or want to host a fun Christmas party, Econo Wine and Spirits has got you covered.

The liquor store, located at 387 Street South in Wahpeton, has a variety of different drinks to choose from for any occasion, according to sales-man Keath Borchert.

In terms of beer for the holidays, Borchert said the craft beer section, beers that are made by more smaller, independent and traditional companies, is usually the most popular. Seasonal beers found in this section are usually heavily enjoyed, espe-cially the winter ales like Blue Moon Winter Ab-bey Ale, which according to Blue Moon’s website has tastes of malty caramel with a touch of dark chocolate, as well as a small amount of hop bitter-ness. Another seasonal beer is the new Sam Adams Winter Classic, which is a blend of holiday spices

MATTHEW LIEDKE • DAILY NEWSKeath Borchert discusses wine selection at Econo Wine and Spirits, located next to Econo Foods in Wahpeton.

like cinnamon, nutmeg and orange peel.

Borchert said that in the wine selection, boxed wines have become very popular, even running out of a few flavors on the shelves in the store. The two best selling wines are the brands Franzia and Vella boxed wines, both of which offer clas-sic wines such as White Zinfandel and Merlot. Borchert said their wine selection is very large and can supply whatever people are looking to buy in terms of wine from the lower to the higher priced brands.

On the other side of the store lies the selections of rum, whiskey, vodka and other hard liquors. Borchert explained that many of the top shelf products that the store sells make the best gifts. For whiskey, Borchert recommended Pendleton Whiskey as well as the

Canadian classic Crown Royal.

According to Crown Royal’s website, the drink can be used to make a spiked apple ci-der for a good holiday beverage. Borchert also showed the new Crown Royal product that is on their shelves, Crown Royal Maple finish, Borchert said that the new whiskey “smells just like syrup.” Anoth-er whiskey that Econo Wine and Spirits has on the shelves is Bushmills Irish Whiskey. Borchert said that this whiskey would make a great gift and is best enjoyed “sip-ping slowly by a fire-place.”

In the vodka section, the best gift choice would be the Grey Goose brand which is one of the more popular top shelf brands.

That perfect gift is waiting for youBY KATHLEEN LEINEN • DAILY NEWS [email protected]

It’s that time of year when stores are piping Christmas music through their stores. Holiday dec-orations are lining the aisles and people are be-ginning to scramble for their holiday gifts.

Stores are gearing up for their Christmas season and Black Friday, other-wise known as one of the best shopping days of the year, is only days away.

In that bid to make a list and check it twice, this Early Gift Guide is going out to readers in the hopes that some of your holiday shopping is done locally. This is your reminder to look in the Twin Towns

and surrounding commu-nities for exceptional gift ideas. There are plenty of items for any budget.

Shoppers don’t have to drive for miles, deal with parking issues and crowded malls to look for gifts. If this scenario sounds stressful, it’s because it is. Shopping doesn’t have to elevate your blood pressure. Don’t deal with crowds, instead choose to deal with friendly salespeople who will provide service after the sale.

To help you get through this season (relatively) un-scathed, we took it upon ourselves to compile a list of area merchants who can supply you with those perfect-for-any-situation

gifts. From mom to boy-friend, hostess, grandma and grandpa to babysitter and bus driver gifts, these merchants will give you some gifting inspiration, so let the holiday shop-

ping begin.Toys of all sizes are all

over the Twin Town area. Shop locally as you look for the perfect toy for your child. Imagine the sight of your child on Christmas

morning when they open that special gift. Their hearts shine in their eyes as they cannot believe what they are seeing. Make that special memo-ry happen this year. And what will make this mo-ment even more special is capturing it on camera. And yes, they too can be purchased locally.

Christmas isn’t all about children either. From tools to robes, mom and dad have plenty of gift options available this year. Give her the gift of pampering, she’ll love you for it. If a big-ticket item is more in line this year for your home, those big washers and dryers are all available.

Speaking of happy mo-

ments, how about a huge flat screen TV to grace your home? Retailers throughout the Twin Towns can supply this need and more. There are barbecues, stoves, fire-places and more to heat, cook and delight your loved one this Christmas.

If dad needs tools, there are plenty of ideas found inside this gift guide.

Furniture? Yes, you guessed it, they are all right here.

Holiday shopping doesn’t have to be a hectic, frantic rush to the finish. It can be done while talk-ing with experts who will guide you along on every-thing you’ll need. So shop locally and enjoy the holi-days this year.

Shop locally this year Christmas shopping shouldn’t elevate your

blood pressure as you fight the crowds and lack of parking. Choose to shop in the Twin Towns and surrounding communities this year – those special gift items are just

waiting for you to pick them up

Merry Christmas

Thrifty TreasuresSpecial gifts for every budget

BY ROBYN ROHDE • NEWS-MONITOR [email protected]

A Paul Simon song may have special meaning to the people in Richland County soon. Ron Kill and his family are putting a new spin on the old English phrase “one man’s trash, is another man’s treasure.”

The newest transplants to Lidgerwood just opened up Thrifty Treasures last Monday. The small shop is located on Wiley Avenue next to Popp Binding and Lamination, Inc., and was designed to be a place for local people to find their treasure at prices for every budget.

Kill retired from the U.S. Air Force this summer and after spending 24 years traveling around the world, the family of four decided it was time to find a more stable place close to family. Lidgerwood seemed like the perfect fit since Kill’s parents are Mayor Steven Oddo and his wife Dudrun.

“This area has been nothing but the friendliest people I have ever met in all my travels,” Kill said.

ROBYN ROHDE • NEWS-MONITOROwners of Thrifty Treasures in Lidgerwood Tina and Ron Kill.

Living in a rural area, Kill is familiar with the struggle to get to larger towns with chain stores. Wahpeton is 40 miles away and Fargo is 60, so Kill wanted to bring some of those items lo-cally, while helping keep prices down.

“It’s a challenge for people to get out to those places and why should they have to drive so far,” Kill questioned. “We wanted to bring things back to this area so they don’t have to drive. I am not trying to take any-thing away from the lo-cal businesses. Contrary to that I am actually try-ing to increase business in town with another reason to come to Lidger-wood.”

Kill says he is willing to stock anything people are looking for, but at the thrift store price. Right now, the shop includes many new and gently

used items. In the future, Kill would like to add consignment options as well. Due to the limited space of the current loca-tion, his selection of fur-niture is limited.

“We keep telling people if they don’t find it today, come back tomorrow,” Kill said. “It’s a thrift store so you never know what we’re going to have. We are constantly get-ting new things in all the time.”

Some of the current items available in the store include new, still tagged clothing items. Other popular items so far include small elec-tronics such as cell phone chargers, watches and jewelry, brand name toys, seasonal items, as well as all the little knickknacks a person could want.
