Early College program at Manatee School For the Arts?

Learning Goal: After the presentation, students and parents will: Know the requirements for admission into the Early

College program. Know the difference between Dual Enrollment and Early

Admissions. Know what steps to take to apply for Early College.

What is Early College ? Dual Enrollment

Highly qualified students in grades 9-12 may take college level classes that count as both high school and college credit.

College credits are accepted at any college or university in the state of Florida.

Courses are offered on the high school campus. Courses offered at MSA must be taken on campus unless the student is

an Early Admissions student (Seniors Only). Juniors and seniors may enroll in a maximum of 2 Dual Enrollment

courses per semester on the SCF Campus (not to exceed 15 credit hours in combination with high school Dual Enrollment). These students may have a reduced schedule of 6 classes on the

MSA campus. Courses taken at SCF must count as high school credit to meet

graduation requirements. Students may take any approved college course not offered on the

high school campus.

What is Early College?

Early Admissions Qualified high school seniors enroll at SCF on a full-time basis not to exceed

fifteen (15) credit hours per semester. Course enrollment is limited to courses that meet and do not exceed high school

graduation requirements. The courses are creditable towards an Associate of Arts Degree (AA).

Dual Enrollment Qualified high school students take college level classes on the MSA campus. Juniors and seniors can take classes and at MSA and SCF.

Is Early College right for everyone? In a word, no! Early College is an opportunity to take courses at the college level. The amount of work necessary to succeed is usually much greater than in high school courses. The majority of work is done independently outside of class. Because early college courses become part of a permanent college transcript, you must commit to doing the work required or risk jeopardizing future college plans.

Things to Consider:

1. College goals-where you want to attend school (including in state or out of state)

2. Dual Enrollment vs. AP courses 3. GPA (will affect both high school and college GPA) 4. Discuss goals with your parents/guardians and High School

Early College Requirements Grade Point Average:

3.0 cumulative unweighted Grade Point Average - A “C” average must be maintained while in Early College.

MSA Approval: No D’s or F’s in the last school year or in the current school year. High School Courses in Middle School.

Test Scores : All students must demonstrate college readiness in reading and

writing . Juniors and Seniors must demonstrate college readiness in math to take

College Algebra. Students will take the P.E.R.T.. - Post Secondary Education Readiness

Test - P.E.R.T. test date - Wednesday, February 24th . P.E.R.T Study Guide link is on the Guidance page of the MSA website. College readiness may also be demonstrated with concordance scores on

the ACT/SAT.SCF Application and MSA Early College Contract:

MEET ALL DEADLINES…Students must complete the SCF application and return the Early College Contract before MSA will enroll a student in a college course.

Please pay close attention to deadlines for applications and the MSA contract.

SCF is NOT flexible with deadlines. MSA is not flexible with deadlines.

If your application or MSA Contract are not on file by the deadline = no Early College.

WE HAVE TWO DEADLINES:APPLICATION FOR EARLY COLLEGE AND

P.E.R.T. TESTING IS FRIDAY, February 12th.

THE EARLY COLLEGE DEADLINEFOR THE 2016/2017 SCHOOL YEAR

IS FRIDAY, JUNE 3RD. THIS INCLUDES ALL PAPERWORK!

Application Process

Take and pass the P.E.R,T. Students will receive the SCF Application, copy of PERT Scores, MSA

Contract, and an application checklist. Follow the list! Students should fill out the application themselves. Review the app with your parents and ask them to sign all of the

documents. Return the app to Ms. Quick for a final review and MSA signature. Take the application to SCF Educational Records Office. Students must be present at the time the app is taken to SCF or they will not

receive the SCF Student ID # (GOO#). Return the Early College Contract to MSA with the G00# in the slot

provided. Scheduling:

Dual Enrollment students will be given the option to take ENC 1101 (freshman English) and AMH 1010/1020 (American History).

Early Admissions (Seniors Only) will need to complete additional paperwork.

Early College is an excellent opportunity to earn high school and college credit simultaneously at no cost to you for tuition or books.

However, you MUST be willing to meet deadlines for acceptance and to work hard in the course to be successful!
