We had a congenial meeting and a frank discussion regarding the tax burden that the homeowners of this District bear. I asked that they seriously consider giving our taxpayers some respite. They were very open to the discussion and expressed concern about the tax burden. B. A. WHEA Meeting – Attachment 1 is the agendas from meeting that was held with the leadership of the Woodland Hills Education Association. B. Early Childhood Superintendents’ Meeting – Attachment 2 is the agenda for the first meeting of the Early Childhood Superintendents’ group. We had a good discussion on Pre-K education and its importance as we strive towards excellence.

C. Closing of Jr. High School Pool– Attachment 3 is an explanation from John Besseck for the closing of the pool at the Junior High School.

D. Distinguished Educator Meetings – Our Distinguished Educators, Drs. Elaine Brown and Fred Smeigh, met this week with the principals at Dickson Elementary, Fairless Elementary, and the Senior High School. Attachment 4, Attachment 5, and Attachment 6 are the Agenda/Minutes from those meetings respectively.

Our Distinguished Educators have been particularly helpful in their observations and suggestions. They are two extremely talented educators and they are contributing substantially to the improvement of academics in our District.

Meeting Notes

Thursday, November 9, 2010

Present: Lyndsey Love and Elaine Brown

Weekly Staff Meeting- Dr. Brown attended the building weekly staff meeting this morning.

Staff participated in a Math and Science Partnership activity and was given information on the

“enemies of learning” per Charles Feltman’s Insight Coaching.

Weekly Walkthroughs- Six walk-throughs were conducted by Ms. Love and Dr. Brown; we

debriefed comparing our notes as we checked for (SAMME) scaffolding, active engagement,

modeling, metacognition, explicit instruction, formative assessment, and higher level thinking

skills (Bloom). Principals will continue daily walk-throughs to compile more data so a clearer

picture of need is developed for analysis of professional development.

General Discussion:

Networking with other principals for more good ideas

Bloom’s revised taxonomy verbs in lesson plans; a different format was emailed to the

principals for consideration

Meeting Notes

Monday, November 8, 2010

Present: Jean Livingston, Kelly Berthold, and Elaine Brown

Weekly Walkthroughs- Five walk-throughs were conducted by Principals and Dr. Brown; we

debriefed comparing our notes as we checked for (SAMME) scaffolding, active engagement,

modeling, metacognition, explicit instruction, formative assessment, and higher level thinking

skills (Bloom).

Principals began developing binders which includes a SAMME checklist for each teacher so that

they will be able to conduct data driven conversations with teachers relative to each teacher’s

instructional skills and where teachers may need improvement plans. Principals will also be able

to display and analyze grade level competencies to determine where building wide professional

development is needed.

Principals will continue daily walk-throughs compiling more data so a clearer picture of need is

developed for analysis of professional development. We will choose strategies to be used by staff

to improve student achievement. Principals also will be able to update their Getting Results data

at the conclusion of this school year and the DE will submit a working plan to PDE based on this

choice.

Meeting Notes

November 11, 2010

Present: Daniel Stevens, Licia Lentz, Marlo Robinson, Kevin Murray, Fred Smeigh

Research on Effective Low- Income High Schools

Dr. Smeigh presented a power –point that dealt with the practices and characteristics of high

schools, based on research, that are effective at improving the academic performance of

previously low-achieving students. The presentation and discussion centered on instruction,

rigorous academic core, leadership, and positive school environment. Mr. Stevens indicated that

he would like to share the power-point with the faculty.

Active Engagement – Formative Assessment – Scaffolding

The high school administration decided to concentrate on active engagement, formative

assessment, scaffolding, and reading in the content area. Dr. Smeigh passed out a draft of

activities that could be used to implement active engagement, formative assessment, and

scaffolding. We will discuss the utilization and implementation of these strategies at future

meeting. We also discussed the videos of teachers implementing many of these strategies

available on the PDE website.

November 5, and continuing all day regarding fatal van accident. All three TV

stations and daily newspapers covered the accident. (see packet clippings) Made

calls to all board members to inform them of accident and steps taken to address

the situation.

Arranged media coverage of D.A. Zappala’s announcement at Safety Forum

meeting on Tuesday, November 9, regarding WHSD being chosen as pilot for

new GPS tracking of sex offenders. All three TV stations and Tribune Review

Curriculum Updates for the week of November 8, 2010.

This week, we spent some time working with the new Common Core Standards. Attached is a

FAQ sheet with the latest information on the Common Core. There is a proposed three-year

transition plan, concluding with full implementation of Common Core for the 2013-2014 school

year. We have begun the development of crosswalk documents in aligning our curriculum with

the PA Common Core Standards.

It would be logical to assume that the Common Core Standards will lead to a national test

someday. We have been informed by PDE that our district has been selected to represent schools

across the nation by participating in the 2011 administration of the National Assessment of

Educational Progress (NAEP). The 8th

grade in the Junior High and the 12th grade in the

senior high have been randomly chosen by the United States Department of Education to do the

test between January and March of 2011.

The K-6 Social Studies Curriculum Development team met this week and work is progressing on

the Understanding by Design course work that will be implemented in the coming year. The

work will use source materials that are rigorous and relevant to today’s student. The team has an

outline of the objectives and is chunking the work grade by grade.

We are completing the Continuous Quality Improvement Goals (CQI) for Pre-K Counts this

week. The goals are focusing on professional development, student positive behavior and

instructional links to the kindergarten program. These are reviewed by PDE.

We have done the required reporting for the EAP Tutoring program at the High School. Tutoring

takes place in Math and Reading/Writing. The Eligibility Rosters and the Attendance Reports

were filed by the deadline of November 12th

.

Horatio Sanchez is considered to be one of the nation’s foremost authorities on resiliency and

brain-based research. A team of Woodland Hills administrators and instructional coaches

attended a seminar with Dr. Sanchez at the AIU this week. The science of positive behavior

support goes along nicely with our CHAMPS program and our Olweus Bullying project.

We are reviewing the National Education Technology Plan entitled “Learning Powered By

Technology” that the Obama Administration released officially this week. We are very pleased

that our current efforts are well aligned with the national vision.

Major meetings this week included a coordination meeting with our Distinguished Educators

(Dr. Fred Smeigh and Dr. Elaine Brown). The notes from the meeting are part of the packet. A

planning session with the Pre-K Counts Liaison (Mrs. Sharon Price) focused on goals and

student success rates.

I was a featured speaker at the OASIS Intergenerational conference this week. Practitioner ideas

for effective tutoring was the topic.

The Common Core Standards Frequently Asked Questions

Are the PA Common Core standards an exact duplicate of the posted Common Core standards

(http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards)?

PA’s Common Core standards include all of the national Common Core standards verbatim; however, states

may add additional statements to the standard set to incorporate any PA standards not addressed in

Common Core. As analysis and alignment studies continue, there is a possibility of limited additions to the

Common Core Standards in the future.

What is the status of work to date on the transition to Common Core Standards?

English language arts and mathematics educators from across the state have met for three extended

sessions to accomplish the following:

• Completed an alignment study for grades 3, 5, 8, and 11 comparing content and rigor of Common Core

Standards to the PA Chapter 4 grade level standards.

• Expanded the initial alignment study to include all grade levels and course standards currently available on

SAS.

• Developed documents to illustrate the relationship (including gaps) between PA’s current standards and

the Common Core Standards.

In light of Common Core, how should districts move forward as related to writing and revising

curriculum?

Districts are encouraged to continue with their curriculum review cycles and use the chart below to guide

curriculum work.

What will be available to assist districts in transitioning to Common Core?

The December 2010 SAS Institute will offer sessions for educators to provide direction in transitioning

from PA Standards to PA Common Core. In December, all crosswalk documents, revised Assessment

Anchor materials, and supporting materials will be posted on SAS under the Clear Standards tab.

As the year progresses, IUs will receive training to share with local districts. Full implementation of

Common Core is required for the 2013-14 school year. During the 2010-2011 school year, staff

development sessions will be held to assist districts to begin planning while realignment/modification of

curriculum may begin in 2011-2012. IUs will be poised to offer assistance to districts in planning and

implementing the new standards.

In light of Common Core, how should districts move forward as related to Keystone Exams?

Adoption of the Common Core will have minimal impact, if any, on the content of the Keystone Exams.

Keystone Exams Assessment Anchor and Eligible Content booklets

(http://www.pdesas.org/Assessment/Keystone) detail the Standards, Anchors, and Eligible Content to

support curriculum alignment to prepare students for success with the assessments.

Specifically, in English language arts, the alignment of the Keystone Exams to Common Core is strong, and

as districts evaluate their curricula to ensure students are prepared for the Keystone literature and

composition assessments, the Assessment Anchor booklets are a solid design tool from which to evaluate

course content.

In mathematics, the Keystone Exams are organized around the contents of the typical Algebra I, Algebra

II, and geometry courses. These course categories are independent of grade level designations and

therefore fit with Common Core very well.

Will PSSA test items change as a result of adoption of Common Core standards?

There are currently no plans to alter the content of the PSSA tests.

If a district is in the midst of a curriculum rewrite in English Language Arts or Mathematics, should

Common Core Standards play a role?

At this time, districts should use the revised PA Standards and the Assessment Anchors/Eligible Content,

as appropriate. Also, the learning progressions developed by PDE and available in SAS should provide

guidance in course development.

Those anxious to gain a sense of the focus and direction of Common Core in English Language Arts might

and language (http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/english-language-arts-standards). Anchor

Standards capture the “big ideas” in each of the four domains, and they are the standards from which all

grade levels are derived.

In mathematics, it is recommended that district teams consider the Common Core K-12 Mathematical

Practices Standards that overarch all of the K-12 mathematics content standards

(http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/mathematics/introduction/standards-for-mathematical-

practice/).These Mathematical Practices Standards articulate the description of the behavior of truly

competent mathematics students and users. Once any curriculum design is completed, it is recommended

that teams use these Mathematical Practices Standards to gain insight into the quality of their

instructional strategies.

Are there any plans for Common Core Standards in science and social studies?

A draft version of national science and engineering standards has recently circulated in the science

community; however, they have not been released in any draft form by the Chief Council of State School

Officers (CCSSO), the sponsoring organization of the Common Core initiative.

While nothing has been announced in social studies, the National Council of Social Studies reports strong

support for the project and is poised to support initiatives to develop better, deeper, and clearer

standards for all states.

Control) panel for the energy management system on.

� 3rd quarter of 2010 (October 18th) Edgewood gym flooring preparation and installation

on test areas 004, 012, 019.

o Memorandum from George Novak dated September 14, 2010 requesting change

to baseball outfield at third base area.

o Palombo Landscaping and HHSDR have been advised of change and cost of

change expected on or around October 22, 2010.

o Change requested by George Novak in memorandum of September 24, 2010 was

approved at Facility Committee meeting on October 27, 2010. Remediation of

swale on the baseball field will be completed at no charge to the district. Palombo

Landscaping to start week of November 1, 2010.

o Palombo Landscaping completed excavation for the remediation of the swale at

the baseball field on November 10, 2010. George Novak and Dan Stephens

visited the site and approved of the excavation. Palombo Landscaping will install

new sod on November 11, 2010. Remediation will be at no cost to the school

district.

o Palombo Landscaping and Stone & Company performed a Schmidt Hammer test

October 21st on areas 004, 012, and 019. Test results will be made available

upon receipt.

o The Schmidt Hammer test results for areas 004, 012, and 019 were above 4500

which indicates the concrete meets the acceptable strength specifications.

Palombo Landscaping will guarantee all concrete work for 5 years. Replacement,

if needed, would be at no cost to the school district. J.D. Construction will also

apply Densicrete Sealer supplied by Stone and Company to the concrete areas for

2 years. Palombo Landscaping will schedule the application of the sealer with the

district. (See Attachment)

o Palombo Landscaping’s cost to fix the swale at the left side of the baseball field is

$7,860.00. Labor, 2 loads of topsoil, and 100 yards of sod has been included in

the price. Funding will come from the Project Contingency Fund which is set at

$18,915.00 as per project specifications. To date, the project contingency fund

was used for additional fencing at baseball cage ($4,900.00), additional concrete

at various areas ($5,269.00), and the proposed swale renovation ($7,860.00).

After the swale renovation, the balance of the contingency fund will be $886.00.

� 3rd quarter of 2010 (June) ongoing implementation of facility scheduling improvements

using FSDirect by SchoolDude and district wide internal event scheduling.

� 4th quarter of 2010 (October 15th) began implementation of new comprehensive staff

PfP (Partnering for Performance) evaluation and procedures.

MONTHLY MEETING WITH BUREAU SPECIAL EDUCATION STATE ADVISER

We reviewed district-wide, school-by-school, student discipline data. The comments

from our Adviser, Ms. Held support overall improvement in how our students with disabilities are being disciplined. To date, she noted that we have a very good record in regard to the number of students with IEP’s who have been recommended for expulsions. That number, to date, is zero.

After the Adviser’s review, I scheduled with and met with each building administrator(s)

to discuss the findings of the Adviser. We discussed strategies for continuous improvements.

Next meeting with the Adviser is on 12/14/2010 @ 9:30.The purpose of this meeting is to conduct student file reviews for compliance. Teachers and principals have been working hard to come into compliance relative to how the IEP document and NOREP’s, in particular, are written and implemented.

Technology Department Weekly Report 11-11-10 Brian, Dan and Courtland attended the AIU sponsored TRETC (Three Rivers Educational Technology Conference) in Cranberry Township on Wednesday. We attended multiple informative Technology sessions sponsored by Cisco and AIU member districts. We also had a meeting with the consultant the AIU has retained to evaluate our current VoIP (Voice over IP Telephony) phone system and help us develop a reliable cost effective consortium solution.

Brian continued to have dialogue with prospective SIS (Student Information Service) vendors and prepare his evaluation for the November Board meeting.

Dan Allison has been updating the Academy student laptops with additional testing software and updates while they are on hiatus. Steve Muiter continued working on the monthly District video. He has also been creating updated BXP desktop workstation images. BJ ran PIMS reports and made corrections to all PIMS data. She also lead a bus trip to the County Courthouse so all school secretaries could be sworn in as notaries. Keith has been working on helpdesk tickets and on the spot fixes for various IT related issues in all of the District Buildings. We edited and uploaded the Agenda Board Meeting to WHSD website.

Thursday Brian, Dan and Courtland meet with Aruba Networks, a wireless solution vendor we meet at TRETC. We discussed multiple wireless scenarios the District could implement and equipment we can begin testing for free.

TRANSPORTATION AND FOOD SERVICE WEEKLY UPDATE

Transportation:

o The district experienced a fatal bus accident on Friday morning. An AJ Myers van carrying

homeless students living in Pittsburgh wrecked on Liberty Avenue in the Strip District. The

driver died in the accident. Two children were hospitalized.

o Both children are home from the hospital and are planning to return to school on Monday.

o Review of all background checks of carriers are in progress. I have been meeting with the

carriers and randomly requesting updated child abuse and criminal checks on drivers and

monitor. Several updated child abuse and criminal checks, although not required, have been

requested.

o Discussions have begun to review bus contractor maintenance records for all buses within the

district. A meeting with Bacco Wednesday provided an open door invitation to review anything

the district requests.

Food Service:

o A meeting with the Chartwells District Manager covered several compliance concerns. All

information is being provided.

o The auditor has begun reviewing the 2009/2010 food service program. Most documents that

have been requested have been provided. Chartwells is waiting on a few internal receipts

which are anticipated by Friday.

o The first and second invoices have yet to be processed due to Chartwells not getting the

requested information timely. A meeting is scheduled for Thursday afternoon to finalize billing

for both periods.

o A presentation is in the planning stages for students who benefit from the Fresh Fruit and

Vegetable Program. Chartwells will be sending a chef to one building to put on a presentation

about healthy eating.

Weekly Positive Highlights

PTO sponsored the first Reading Is Fundamental week with a book

give away on Thursday, November 4. Every child selected a free

book to take home as his or her own.

The Student Leadership Group started their annual canned food drive

for the local food bank. It will run until November 19.

Mrs. Wagner’s 4th

and 5th grade students created unique and beautiful

wire art sculptures in imitation of artist Alexander Calder. The

artwork is on display in the main lobby of Dickson.

Positives from Fairless During the week of November 8, 2010 Fairless Elementary had a visit from the Care Mobile. 11 students were seen for immunizations, physicals and asthma related health issues. The Distinguished Educator, Dr. Brown, has been conducting weekly walk throughs with Mrs. Berthold and Mrs. Livingston. The Service Club hosted a “Slipper Day” on Friday, November 5th. The staff and students enjoyed wearing their slippers throughout the day. This Saturday, the Service Club will be volunteering at the Food Bank. The Fairless students raised $255 by Trick or Treating for UNICEF.

WEEKLY POSITIVE MESSAGE

11/09/10 Students with G.R.E.A.T. and significantly improved behavior participated in

the Work Hard, Play Hard Award (RtII Program). Students had a special

lunch and a recess activity to award their success.

11/10/10 Shaffer continuously recognizes the accomplishments of students.

Lunch with the Principal is an incentive program that celebrates student

academic and behavioral success. One student from each rotating grade level

is formally invited to have lunch with Dr. Vereen each Wednesday during

their designated lunch period. One parent serves a special lunch to the

honorees as the children are recognized publically for the educational efforts.

11/10/10 Veteran’s Day Assembly—Veterans were honored with a special assembly.

Senator Paul Costa attended along with several local veterans including Mr.

Vereeen (Dr. Vereen’s father) and Mr. Carpenter (WHHS teacher). Students

each received a flag from Senator Costa’s office.

11/10/10 Shaffer Idol—Over 70 students showed off their talent at the high school.

Acts included dancing, singing, mimes, instrument playing, etc. It was an

incredible and successful event organized by our PTO President, Tara Reis.

Money was raised for the orchestra/band programs at Shaffer.

11/11/10 Shaffer’s Parent/Teacher Conference was a huge success. Many parents

came to discuss their children’s education.

11/12/10 Honors Assembly—Students were honored for their academic, attendance,

and citizenship success.

The second annual “Stuff-A-Bus” has begun and will be held in conjunction with KISS radio station. This activity is carried out by the employees of Wilkins Elementary. A bus (donated by Mr. Bacco) is “stuffed” with toys and given to KISS radio. Their collection is held in Miracle Mile on a designated date. The toys go to needy children in the school district and neighboring areas. It is our way of thanking everyone we work for. Mrs. Bloch contacted all district administrators to participate with Wilkins. Only employees of the district are asked to donate, not parents or children. Our goal is to “stuff” several buses. The radio station gave us wonderful PR for a week last year! Please join us to help make this a happy holiday for many children!

Notables from Wilkins Elementary Week of November 1 – 5, 2010 Page 2 Mr. Bassett, Room 111 5th Grade Teacher This week, the students in room 111 were introduced to the voting process. We discussed the importance of being knowledgeable and participating in the vote each November. This lead to discussions of the president and the White house (even though this year was not a presidential election). In the computer lab on Friday afternoon, I had the students visit an interactive White House site provided by msnbc. The site allows users to explore the White House, read descriptions of specific rooms, and look at pictures taken in 360 degree imaging. The students were able to get a glimpse of the important government activities that affect all of our lives as well as the environment our president works in every day. Back in the classroom, we had a great discussion about what we had seen and thought about. I recommend this website for any teacher who plans to discuss government. 11-05-10 Wolverines defeated the Norwin Knights in WPIAL’s first round Playoffs held at the Wolvarena. They now advance to the second round playing the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils at Baldwin on 11-12-10. 11-06-10 SAT examination administered at the high school. 11-07-10 Members of the Interact Club volunteered at the annual Churchill Rotary Pancake Breakfast held at the High School’s cafeteria. 11-10-10 Senior members of the French Club experienced a field trip to a local French Café. Members of the Rifle Team held a movie night at the Rifle Range with a showing of Toy Story 3.
