Bargaining Updates By: Penny Morgan
Elected delegates from each local union in the province spent two days at the BCTF Bargaining Conference. The time was spent discussing, debating and voting on the BCTF Executive Committee’s recommendations for priorities for the upcoming round of provincial bargaining (spring 2019), as well as over 100 resolutions submitted by locals. Along with MRTA President Suzanne Hall and First Vice-President Penny Morgan, our local elected delegates were Brian Geary, Martin Dmitrieff, and Kaitlin Thorarinson.
We heard many compelling stories and arguments from members around the province; these helped inform our decisions regarding bargaining for language that will benefit as many as possible. Our local priorities were well reflected in the extensive list of recommendations that the delegation passed. Woven throughout was the urgency to address the critical teacher shortage in BC; the goals included improving conditions to enhance the recruitment and retention of teachers.
All Advisory Committees had the opportunity to give a short presentation on priorities from their committee perspective. The TTOC Advisory Committee highlighted three main areas that for focus during this round of bargaining for TTOCs: TTOC economic well-being, the need for TTOCS to be treated with the same degree of professionalism as contract colleagues, and recruitment and retention.

Surviving December!!!Penny Morgan: As a primary teacher, my survival tip for December is to make sure to have fun and enjoy the season! I liked to do this by reading lots of seasonal stories, singing familiar Christmas songs, and making crafts.
Krystyna Doran-Eddy: December callouts are unpredictable and the season becomes overwhelming quickly. Take a break! Spend time in your PJs with family, friends, and hot cocoa. #awesome
Carissa Coyle: My December survival tip is to create projects that students can work on. It’s great to have those pieces to fill time where students are independently working on their own learning.
Kelly Harris: If you're in to supplements and such, start pumping the echinacea/ColdFX/Oil of Oregano or whatever it is you take in mid-December. No one wants to spend the holiday’s sick in bed! Also,
remember: advent calendars aren't just for kids!😊
Jasmeen Josan: Make it fun! December is a busy time of the school year with conferences completed, and Christmas concerts fast approaching. I like to start off December by writing Santa Letters. I then use the Elf on the Shelf to keep my students engaged. Our elf isn't just an ordinary elf, he's a traveling elf that teaches us exciting things all about Canada.
Hilaire Ford: Always have a Christmas alternative! Students/staff who do not celebrate Christmas will appreciate you. Think of winter, local First Nations traditions, or Kwanzaa!
Jennifer MacDonald: behappyteachSing a lot (in your head, aloud, with or without your students). Be aware when your class needs flexibility in the plan. Watch a classic toon. Take 5 mindful minutes in the car before you head into the school #selfcare #resiliency #TeachinginDecember #supportedteachersstayteachers
Richard McGraw: Hi Teachers! The best we I have found to make it through December is by remembering to have fun. Whether by playing a Christmas song, spending time with loved ones, or doing some baking, make sure you laugh your way through the month. Self care is extra important at this time of year. Don't wear yourself out!
Lisa Neumann: Candy Canes. Keep a supply of Candy Canes, and Holiday trivia questions ready to go. If there is a time filler needed during the chaos of Elementary Christmas concert prep, it will be ready, and the kids love it!
