Engaging with Urban Regeneration SESSION ONE: Mapping the Changes Objectives To become familiar with the local environment including landmarks, transport links, housing, business and retail areas and open spaces To learn about the heritage of the local area To discover the changes that have taken place in the local area over a period of a hundred years To use aerial photographs, archive photographs and maps Introduction: Show large aerial view of present day local area to the class and show the main landmarks and features of interest Discuss transport routes and natural features with class and how these have shaped the area Identify important features in the local area Children, in pairs, identify features on an A4 aerial photograph in pairs, including roads, tube stations, open spaces and landmark buildings that they may already know. The children label each feature that they recognise Children briefly feedback about local landmarks they found Go through all the local features together again on the whiteboard Main: Comparing the local area with 100 years ago Share some of the stories of the past that took place locally Look at archive photographs on the whiteboard of the local area 100 years ago and talk about them Mapping changes over the years (cut and paste exercise) Children, in pairs or threes, match photos of landmarks and local places from 100 years ago to those of the present day and position them onto a map of the local area Each group feeds back to the class about what they have discovered about changes in their neighbourhood over a hundred years Geography | Key Stage 2 | Duration: 1.5 hours © Hammersmith & Fulham Urban Studies Centre
