EAO help project to improve RNLI crew communicationMotion control specialists Grayhill haveextended their range to include a newminiature optical encoder, the 63A, which isjust 20mm in diameter. It is available directthrough EAO - the Human Machine Interfacespecialist.

Small but packed with features, the 63Aencoder offers 256 position accuracy and amaximum shaft speed of 8,000 RPM. It willoutput in either Gray code or Binary code.

It is very durable, combining a conductivecarbon fibre composite housing thatprovides the EMI shielding of an all-metalhousing with the performance of alightweight robust assembly; it will handle aload of up to 2 lbs.

The encoder provides 8-bit absoluteresolution, making it suitable for applicationswhich must have absolute shaft positioningeven through power interruptions, or where itis impractical to reset or "Zero" the systemduring recalibration. They are also ideal fordiscrete digital positioning and angulardetection at start-up.

In many motion systems, rotary opticalencoders provide the most versatile andeconomical means to obtain feedbacksignals for position and speed control.

EAO Ltd is proud to have been chosen tosupply switches for the new Boat CrewRadio Headset which is planned to be usedby the Royal National Lifeboat Institution(RNLI).

The headset, which was developed byDavies Industrial Communications Ltd(www.daviescomms.co.uk) in associationwith the RNLI, allows hands-freecommunication between crew memberswhilst they are on deck or assisting a casualty.

Two Grayhill 56 rotary switches are used inaddition to an EAO Series 92 switchingelement. The rotary switches are used on thefront right ear piece to control the ON/OFFfunctions and on the rear of the left ear piece to

control volume. The EAO Series 92 elementis used in the Press-to-Talk (PTT) switch.

Jenny Hymas, spokesperson for DaviesIndustrial Communications Ltd, said: "Manyof our products are used in extremely harshconditions by rescue teams throughout theWorld. In this instance, EAO has given usevery assistance in helping to choose theright switches for the job."

The headset is submersible, so it willcontinue to operate even if a crewman fallsoverboard. If this does happen, it is usuallymuch easier for the crewman to see thelifeboat than it is for the boat to see him, soby using his radio he can direct the boat towhere he is for rescuing.

The intense background noise of a stormy sea and poor visibility makescommunication more difficult for the crewmen of the RNLI, so a newradio headset has been developed to help overcome some of theproblems. EAO Ltd has offered help with the project at design-in stage.

Going through the motions with Grayhill

A spokesperson for the RNLI said that theheadsets have just finished being 'trialed'around the coast and if the trials are provedsuccessful this equipment will become astandard part of RNLI equipment.

Ace cooling fan achieves 130 CFMThermal management specialists SanyoDenki have launched a new cooling fan, theSan Ace 120 G, which creates an impressive130 CFM from a 119mm≈ x 25mm frame size.

The New San Ace 120 G offers high reliabilityand long life. A typical L10 life figure of 40,000hours at 60oC is achieved using highprecision ball-bearings and brass housingwhich minimises bearing temperature rise. Thisseries of fan is therefore suited to high-reliabilityapplications like servers, data storagesystems, as well as for telecommunications.

The San Ace 120 G runs at a top speed of4,100 at a maximum static pressure of 120Pascals, offering an improvement of 55% overthe P-series. It will perform within atemperature range of -10°C to 60°C and hasUL, CSA and TUV approvals.

High-quality ball-bearings encased in a brass

housing and improved aerodynamics of theimpeller and frame help reduce the noise levelto 51 dBA for the G-speed.

The San Ace 120G range is available in 12, 24

and 48 Vdc models. Power-saving efficiency ofthe single-coil, brushless DC motor means the120 G consumes just 10.8W - a reduction ofup to 31% on the 120mm≈ X 25mm P-type fan.

All fans in the San Ace range come completewith reverse polarity protection and a choice ofpulse sensor, locked rotor sensor or low speedsensor to remotely monitor the fans status.

Careful thermal design is critical to theperformance and reliability of electronicequipment. Many electronic system faults areattributable to excess temperature.

EAO applies finishingtouch to bright ideaBright ideas need bright controls, so when Wolfe Designs Ltdneeded illuminated switches for their powerful portablelighting system — the Luminator — they came to EAO.

EAO pushbuttons are renowned for theirdurability and high-reliability, so they were thenatural choice for an innovative new portablelighting system, the Luminator, built by WolfeDesigns Ltd (www.wolfedesigns.co.uk).

The Luminator provides up to 100,000 lumensoutput, or put another way, just four of thesecan floodlight Lords cricket ground.

It can be transformed from a 1.9 metre cylinderto a five metre tower at the touch of a button— an EAO button.

Three EAO Series 14 illuminated pushbuttonsare used in the control panel. They are fittedwith high-brightness LEDs and rugged flush-mount blue bezels which surround the pressarea. Before they were supplied to Wolfe, EAO

engraved the pushbuttons with symbols toindicate their function.

At the tip of each of the Luminator's threeextendable stabilisers is an "anti-trip" high-brightness LED, also supplied by EAO, toindicate the position of the stabilisers' feetwhen it's dark.

Chris Suter, Sales Director, said they choseEAO products because our design aim withthe Luminator was to provide ground breakingportable lighting performance with an instantlyrecognisable stylish look. EAO componentsbrought the quality, tactile performance anddesign styling required by the project.

Alternative sizes of the Luminator, extendableto 4 metres and 3 metres, are also available.

EAO recommends LEDsLED light sources are fast replacing thefilament lamp because they offer typically60,000+ hours service life, compared with36,000 hours for filament lamps. This meansfewer failures and reduced maintenance time.

EAO can supply LEDs in red, green, yellow, blue and white in 12 and 24 VDC. They comein standard bases, so they are well suited tothe replacement of existing lamps.

Leeds-based Scattergood and Johnson werepresented with the Distributor of the Year 2002award for their unparalleled success ingrowing business for EAO Ltd.

Peter Collins, EAO Ltd distribution manager, said that Scattergood won the award for theirexceptional sales growth: “It was an excellentperformance from a loyal business customer.”

Anti-vandal keyboard and trackball is tough but smooth

The new vandal-resistant metal keyboard andintegrated trackball from EAO is incrediblytough without sacrificing the smooth keyaction of a normal desktop PC keyboard.

The integrated unit is built from brushedstainless-steel and Zamac (zinc alloy) andfeatures non-flammable keys that cannot bepulled off. It offers high levels of shock andvibration resistance and a service life of at

least 1.5 million actuations. It is protectedagainst the ingress of dust and water (IP 67from front), making is suitable for outdoor use.

One of the most significant advantages ofEAO's keyboards is the smooth key stroke. The keys have a 1.5 mm travel and need onlya gentle press to realistically simulate the'touch-type' action of a standard PCkeyboard. They are finished in matt chrome

and are laser engraved for high-definitionblack marking which will not easily corrode orwear off.

EAO, a world leader in human-machineinterfaces (HMI), designed the keyboard andtrackball for point-of-service informationterminals in public areas and other 'hostile'environments. They are now widely used ininternet-ready payphones, but are equally

suited to multimedia applications in publicplaces, including libraries, shops and internetkiosks.

A custom-specific layout can also be createdon request for other applications like industrialprocess control panels and ticket issuingmachines.

A choice of two interface languages:PS2 and USB

■ Standard availability in the keyboard layout of ten 10 different languages

■ Internet dedicated shortcut keys likewww, .com and @

■ A single integrated unit for faster, easier mounting

Our tough keyboard andintegrated trackball offers:

Indicator keeps message hidden......until you need it

EAO has developed an illuminated 'Secret till

Lit' indicator to compliment the company's

Series 56 range of door-operating

pushbuttons.

The indicator remains dark and unlit until

activated, whereupon it illuminates a symbol

or legends such as "Door Out of Order" or

"Engaged". Customers can choose from a

selection of LED-illumination colour options

and a range of symbols and legends in

different languages.

The Series 56 indicator, which has amounting depth of only 25mm is sealed toIP67 from the front and IP65 from the rear. Itis robustly designed to meet the rigorousdemands of public use. LED illumination, readable in all weather conditions, provides aminimum life of 100,000 hours and thereforemuch greater reliability than the filament bulbillumination used by many other productscurrently on the market.

The indicator is particularly suited to thechanging needs of the worldwide publictransportation market, both for new stock aswell as for refurbishment projects.

In the last few years designers of bus andcoach drivers' control panels have started tolook at alternatives to the rocker switch.

By comparison with the large lens area of apushbutton, rockers offer poor visualindication of status, they are susceptible toaccidental operation, and they are alsoconsidered out of place amid the flat contoursof flush-mounted controls. They are also bulkywhen compared to the alternatives.

Pushbuttons are now more commonly takingthe place of two-position rockers. They offerbetter visual indication, including LEDillumination options, and a wide range ofstyles. They are also more capable of dealingwith low switching currents, as used inmodern multiplex electrical systems.

EAO, the Human Machine Interface specialist, offers flush-mount rectangular, square and
