MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR JOHN WAIHEE

It gives me great pleasure to extend my greetings and aloha to all theparticipants in the 28th Annual Convention of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, to be heldat the Union Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, November 12 through 15, 1987.

This year's convention is expected to attract more than 2,000 delegatesand will serve to / bring together and unify members of the Hawaiiancommunity in a shared effort to preserve and magnify their cultural identity.

Among .the serious matters for consideration is a proposal for a CivicClubs Constitutional Convention in 1988. There also will be honors for thosewho have contributed most to the Hawaiian community, including awards foroutstanding Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian, outstanding civic club member andthe Prince Kuhle award for the outstanding Hawaiian Civic Club.

The theme of this year's convention, "Joining Together to Share OurHeritage So That It Lives On," should serve the delegates well and inspirethem to greater efforts in the future. I know that this year's convention willbe a consuming and productive experience for the delegates in attendance, andI wish all who participate a most .rewarding and fulfilling event.

A 1985 graduate of the California StateUniversity at Long Beach with a Bachelor's Degree ofFine Arts in Illustration, Kaleolani is currently a free­lance illustrator. Most recently, he completed projectsfor the Children's Museum of Hawaii including thecreation of a children's coloring book.

Coordinationof the project is with the state s 'Dept: ofLand and Natural Resources and Mr. RudyMitchell, Archaeologist of Waimea Falls Park.Members particpated inpr.oviding. patrioticentertainment lor patients of crawford Homeduring the month of July in conjunction withthe Fourth of July celebration. Waialua waspleased to sponsor one child to the Kamebame­ha Schools Exploration Program during thesummer. Annually, our club hosts a WhiteChristmas gatherIngr: the 'Opio of Waialuaproviding games an caroling lor the childrenand distributing goody bags as well as givingout White Christmas boxes of staples andfood items to needy families. Talented, heis the Executive Director of theKalihi-Palama Culture andArts Society, Inc., a leader InHawaii's multi-cultural society, and successfully combinesbeing a scholar ofHawaiian history, language, and culture with producing Hawaiian shows,entertaining, and serving as master of ceremonies on numerous occasions. Heis thefounderof the annual Queen Lilluokalani Keiki Hula Competition, going into its 12th year in 1987, and hasauthored thebook, Nana I na Loea Hula (Look to the Hula Resources), published in 1984. He is aregular and dearly loved consultant to theNorth American Kumu Hula Association of Hayward,California, and most recently, was honored by representing Hawaii with a chant hecomposedand presented In New York at one of the pre-opening events of the re-dedication of the Statueof Liberty.
