WelcomeCongratulations on taking your place in history by running the 1st Ealing Half Marathon!

The event has taken over 12 months to plan and organise and we’d like to thank our partners, supporters, suppliers & local residents for their help & assistance throughout this time. These include Ealing Council, TfL, London Buses, London Fire Service, Metropolitan Police, Steer Davies Gleave, Murrills and UK Athletics.

We’d also like to thank our huge volunteer team who will make sure your run is enjoyable and safe. Please do give them a smile and wave as you run past.

As well as bringing together the running & local communities, the Ealing Half Marathon will be used by runners to raise thousands of pounds for good causes, including our official charity, Epilepsy Action.

We look forward to welcoming you on race day. To ensure your day runs smoothly, please read through the important information in this race guide.

Top tips: • Ensure you have trained

appropriately. You should be able to run comfortably for 10 miles at least 3 weeks before the event

•Listen to your body - if you’re not well on the day, please do not run! There will be plenty of other races, but you only have one life

• Drink a sensible amount of fluids

•Stick to your tried and tested diet on race day - this is not the time to try new foods or mealtimes

• Make sure your friends know your race number and likely finishing time

• If you do have to drop out, please notify the nearest marshal/first aid point so supporters waiting for you can be informed

•Start the race well hydrated and drink whenever you can, especially in the first half of the race, but do not gulp down large volumes of liquid

• Upon finishing, do not stand about getting cold - keep walking and drink a sensible amount of fluid

• Change into dry warm clothes as soon as possible

• Keep taking fluid on-board and have something to eat. CLIF® Bars and evian® will be available immediately after the finish line

Running a half marathon is a significant challenge and not to be taken lightly. For further information visit www.runnersmedicalresource.com

Medical and SafetyMedical and safety matters are of utmost importance to all at the Ealing Half Marathon. We want you to enjoy your race but if you do suffer illness or injury on the day, our specialist medical team will endeavour to provide the best possible response.

Page 6: Ealing Half Marathon 2012 - Race Guide

Race numberYour race number is included in your race pack and should be affixed to the front of your race kit with the number clearly visible. Your personal and emergency details must be written on the reverse of the race number.

TimingYou’ll find a timing chip in your race pack that must be attached according to the instructions provided. This system records the time that you cross the start and finish line to provide an accurate ‘chip time’ regardless of how long it takes you to filter across the start line.

This chip needs to be removed and deposited in the finish zone after the race. Marshals will be on hand to assist you in removing the chip.

Xempo are provided pace makers who will be clearly identifiable and located adjacent to the relevant start zone area. Xempo pace makers will be guiding runners aiming for times of 1h30, 1h45, 2h00, 2h15 & 2h30.

Race day

Page 7: Ealing Half Marathon 2012 - Race Guide

Warm upA pre-race warm up will be lead by Quit The Gym and will take place in the North section of Lammas Park from 08:45. This session will loosen up the muscles & joints and relax the whole body in preparation for the 13.1 miles that lie ahead.

Race startThe race will start promptly at 09:15 and runners should start to assemble in the start zone from 09:00. Signs will be placed throughout the start zone according to estimated finish time and we ask that you assemble in the most appropriate zone for the enjoyment and safety of all runners.

Water stationsevian® natural mineral water will be available to runners in handy 33cl bottles at water stations at 3, 6, 9 & 12 miles, in addition to a 50cl bottle after the finish line. Please try to dispose of your bottle safely in or close to the bins provided on the course. Ealing Broadway Centre are providing the recycling service for the 20,000+ plastic bottles that we will collect.

Page 8: Ealing Half Marathon 2012 - Race Guide

BaggageYou have been provided with a baggage tag in your race pack. Please fix this tag securely and deposit your bag in the baggage marquee according to your race number.

Your baggage will be returned to you at the baggage marquee after the race on presentation of your race number.

The baggage marquee will be covered and staffed at all times but race organisers cannot accept any responsibility for any losses.

PrizesA generous and growing selection of prizes are on offer for runners in a number of categories, including all the usual age categories in addition to Ealing residents and fancy dress prizes. Visit the website www.ealinghalfmarathon.com for the latest prize list.

SpectatorsYour family, friends and colleagues are welcome to come along and support you on the day.

The Race HQ in Lammas Park will be very busy at the start and finish, but there are plenty of great vantage points nearby. We suggest the following areas, many of which benefit from being passed twice by runners:

• Uxbridge Road

• Walpole Park

• Argyle Road

• Scotch Common

Charity is a big part of the Ealing Half Marathon and it’s fantastic to be working with Epilepsy Action as the official charity for the Ealing Half Marathon 2012.

Epilepsy Action is the largest member-led epilepsy organisation in Britain, acting as the voice for the UK’s estimated 600,000 people with epilepsy, as well as their friends, families, carers, health professionals and the many other people on whose lives the condition has an impact.

As well as campaigning to improve epilepsy services and raise awareness of the condition, Epilepsy Action offers assistance to people in a number of ways including a national network of branches, accredited volunteers, regular regional conferences and freephone and email helplines.
