Students return to school:
Tuesday 29th October 2019
Associate Headteacher’s Welcome
This term has marked a number of significant milestones in the school’s development at both ‘ends’ of the student community. We welcomed in our 4th year group of pupils into Year 7 who have shown great resilience in making the challenging transition to secondary school. The Year 7s have helped us launch our two new Houses – Springfield and McQueen – in honour of two more recent figures in our area who have excelled in the performing and visual arts. Meanwhile at the senior end of the school our first ever Year 10 cohort have embarked upon securing work experience placements for next sum-mer as we look very excitedly towards the future. We are delighted that across the school there has been such enthusiasm for this year’s school production, which we can announce will be The Wizard of Oz, with nearly 90 students auditioning. We were also thrilled to receive over 1200 parents and prima-ry school pupils to our open evening where our students acted as tremendous ambassadors for the school as tour guides and department hosts. I am full of gratitude for the tremendous sense of com-munity at the school that is constantly created and re-created by the students, parents and teachers who make up the Ealing Fields family. It was gratifying that this palpable sense of our ethos – of stu-dents being ethical leaders within the school, using their intellects and moral-compass to impact posi-tively on others – was noticed in our first ever Ofsted inspection which was released in Septem-ber. The students should be very proud that they school secured an Outstanding grade for their per-sonal development and behaviour due to the way they live by our ethos on a daily basis. Do enjoy the rest of the newsletter and I wish everyone a very restful half-term.
Building Update
We returned to school in September to the exciting news that the superstruc-
ture works on the new building were complete and that precast flooring units
were being installed. September saw the installation of an attenuation tank be-
low the playground area, pouring of the ground floor concrete slabs and work
to the roof and rendering on Place House. Internal refurbishment is also ongo-
ing and we anticipate the scaffolding will be removed soon. The work remains
on track for the handover in Summer 2020 and the next major milestone will be
making the two new teaching blocks watertight

Introducing the Lawrence Building and Senior
House
We are excited to announce that the buildings at our new school site will be named after the most famous residents of Ealing Park who brought the house and surrounding estate to prominence during the nineteenth century. Louisa Lawrence (neé Senior) and her husband William Lawrence bought Ealing Park for £9,000 in 1838 and both were significant figures of their era whose legacy we are very excited to build on.
Louisa Lawrence set about crafting the land around the main house into beautiful Victori-an gardens which became so famous that many European royalty and even Queen Vic-toria herself visited the house in its hey-day. Her husband William Lawrence was a very prominent surgeon who trail-blazed some theories that later became famous as they were developed by Charles Darwin. He was so well-regarded that he became Presi-dent of the Royal College of Surgeons and Ser-jeant-Surgeon to Queen Victoria.
We have decided to name the main Georgian building Senior House (right of the picture) in honour of Louisa Senior’s role in creating the aesthetic beauty and tranquillity associated with Ealing Park in its pomp. We are naming the main teaching building the Lawrence Building (left of the picture) in honour of Wil-liam Lawrence, whose intellectual curiosity drove him on to think, reason and interpret in the way we hope our pupils will.

Topping out Ceremony
We were able to celebrate the highest point of the structure being reached
with a Topping-Out ceremony on Tuesday 8th October led by Sarah Guinness,
the vicar of St Paul’s Brentford, in whose parish the new school site sits. This
service was attended by local councillors and planning officers, residents’ asso-
ciation representatives, governors, staff and students. It was a fantastic oppor-
tunity to take some students to the site and allow them to leave an ‘imprint’ on
the new school building

Staff News
We have been delighted to welcome 18 new members of staff to the school this term and it was been a great pleasure to see them to get to know their new pupils and tutees. Our three new Heads of Year – Miss James in Year 8, Dr Lawson in Year 9, and Mrs Eustace in Year 10 – have been especially important in
the growing sense of community across the different year groups at Ealing Fields.
We are looking ahead excitedly to next year where we will be recruiting at least 8 further members of staff as the school grows to Year 11 for the first time. Finally, we’d like to wish our new Deputy Head of Languages Ms Jones well as she leaves us to go on maternity leave after October half-term. We hope for a safe arrival of her baby and look forward to having her back with us later in the year.

Kew Archives Trip
A number of student council representatives accom-panied Mr Bedford on a trip to Kew Gardens Archive centre just before half-term. We were delighted to visit to look at some of the archival documents Kew Gardens hold on Louisa Lawrence, the prominent Vic-torian gardener and horticulturalist who our new school will be partially named after. Louisa Lawrence, or Senior as her maiden name was, corresponded reg-ularly with the Director of Kew Gardens as she both donated seeds to Kew but also took cuttings and seeds in an attempt to grow them herself. Louisa Lawrence achieved significant notoriety for beating all her (male) competitors to be first to flower the beautiful amherstia nobilis. Louisa Lawrence donated the plant to Kew Gardens in 1855, the year before she died, where it took pride of place in one of their larger glasshouses. The students poured over the docu-ments as we look to learn all we can about her accom-plishments and we hope to draw attention to them in some historical displays in the new school building.
History film club opened up last week during Wednesday lunch time. Year 10 students, who have been studying the Cold War as part of their GCSE unit, were invited to watch Dr Strangelove the seminal film of living in fear of nuclear destruction! Re-leased in 1964 in the immediate aftermath of the Cuban Mis-sile Crisis it pits the Americans and Soviets head to head. How close is the world to nuclear destruction? Closer than ever when an unhinged American Air Force General launches an unplanned & unprovoked nuclear attack on the USSR!
The film helped students immerse themselves in the pe-riod of study, and enabled them to critically ex-amine the roles of gender in the 1960s (through a comparison of the War Room with the charac-ter of Miss Scott), and the moral dilemmas fac-ing world leaders when the theory of Mutually Assured Destruction is critically undermined. History Film Club will continue throughout the year with films selected that correspond to the
periods of study that the students are learning about across the Key Stages. Year 8s will be invited to Histo-ry Film Club from Wednesday 13th November to ana-
We are very excited to begin our History Scholars Programme for year 9 students. History Scholars is a trust-wide initiative de-signed to encourage deep historical thought and debate. The pro-gramme is led by Ms Easton from Twyford School and students receive two half termly seminars leading to two formal debates
throughout the year in which they compete against Twyford and William Perkin. If there are any Year 9 students that remain interested in the programme but who haven’t yet applied please speak to Mr Coombes to see if

Ealing Fields Sport
A fantastic start to the brand new borough Futsal league which was developed by Mr Green and is hosted by Ealing Fields High School. It kicked off in fine fashion at William Perkin with a futsal festival day which saw Ealing Fields, William Perkin, and Cardinal Wiseman attend and display some amaz-ing skills and tremendous performances. Ealing Fields walked away with the most wins on the day and demonstrated why they are hosting the bor-
A fantastic start to Box fit this year with maximum turnouts from all year groups. The sessions led by the PE department with rules and routines put in place for the fun to begin. All the students have made huge progress in learn-ing and developing new skills. Amazing to see students developing their funda-mental movement skills starting the day in a positive way. The students have also embraced the zones of regulation which aims to provide students with the tools to overcome mental and emotional challenges that they experience
through a school day.
Let’s go Ealing Fields champs!

Year 7 Trip Hillingdon Outdoor Activites Centre
This half term year 7 took to the water for a day of
team building and problem solving. It was our yearly
trip to Hillingdon Outdoor Activities centre where stu-
dents have the opportunity to take part in a series of
fun activities, such as raft building and an obstacle
course in the dark. This action packed day was a great
chance for students to meet new people and to get to
know their form groups. Miss Edwards, Mr Woodham
and all of the year 7 form tutors thank year 7 for their
excellent behaviour and engagement throughout the
day.
