It is hard to believe that March is here already, which means spring is just around the corner! Though this winter has been unseasonably warm, it still will be nice to see the spring flowers bloom.

We are busy working on calendar of events for this summer. You can view it from our website, and see a few of the events listed in this newsletter. We will be bringing back Friday night Grill Nights with corn hole and a fire pit, which are always a great way to spend a summer evening. We will also be hosting Tuesday Theme Nights, from

Taco Tuesdays to Philly cheesesteaks, where Chef Scot will show off his deli-cious family-friendly recipes. Chef Scot will also be preparing a Dinner-To-Go menu, featuring family-style meals to help with the lazy days of summer. Dan also has also set the 2020 golf calendar; it is listed on our website. Kim will be including all these events and more in our EMCC Summer Guide, which will be mailed to all members in early May. We will also email more detailed infor-mation about events as they near.

We will be printing a membership booklet this summer which will list all mem-bers and their contact information. Currently, it is listed on our web portal. If you have recently moved or would like to update your email or phone number, please send the new information to [email protected].

Spring and summer are great seasons to bring along family and friends to EMCC that may be interested in a membership of their own. The future success of EMCC depends on building our membership, and the best way to do this is through your prospect referrals. If you know of anyone you wish to be con-tacted, please pass along their contact information and we will be happy to send them an informational packet. As a reminder, we give a $300 credit for referring a social member and a $500 credit for a full.

Enjoy your March and April!

Have you considered hosting a Fourth Friday at EMCC? Fourth Friday is a business sponsored cocktail hour open to all members and their guests. Those in attendance will enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a signature drink thanks to the $500 donation of the supporting business.

Donors will have their business names and logos included in marketing in our newsletter, through our email campaign, and on our facebook page. They are encouraged to bring advertising materials to set out during the cocktail hour if they would like, and they are welcome to bring their business associates for the evening.

These evenings are a chance for you, as donors, to gain exposure for your business and to potentially introduce new people to our community here at Eagles Mere Country Club.

If you are interested in sponsoring a future event, please call (570)525-3475 ext.3 or email [email protected].

Do you own a business?

The holidays are behind us and we are looking forward to an early spring! We are very happy to have Chef Scott on board at EMCC. The staff and I have been hearing a lot of positive remarks for the food and presentation of your meals. Please make an opportunity to have dinner at the Club and enjoy the fine dining experience.

Spring will soon be here, and the staff will be preparing for Easter on April 12. Look for announcements for Easter and all special events as they are happening. The staff is working hard, and I am certain you will have a pleasant experience.

Please be sure to make your reservations at the time you wish to be seated for your meal.

Thanks to Chef Scott for sharing this delicious recipe with us! This was a hit with the whole office and my 3 year old- a new family favorite. Kim’s tips: Don’t skimp on your bowl size for the eggs! A little syrup on top makes it extra tasty.

You chase down your ball, and there it is... in an impossible spot, right on top of a sprinkler head or on a cart path. There’s no way you can play from there. What to do? Take a drop! This isn’t dodgeball, don’t hit the deck. If your ball has landed where your ball, swing or stance are impeded by a man made obstruction, golf won’t penalize you for that. Without costing you a stroke, you can pick up your ball, find the nearest place of FULL relief (the nearest place you could drop, no closer to the hole), drop it (from knee height) so that it is within one club length of that spot, but no closer to the hole, and continue play. This is an example of FREE RELIEF. What if your ball lands in, on or near a natural obstruction, for example, next to a tree or in (or on) the pond near hole 18? It is not advisable to walk out onto thin ice just to save a stroke, but you are,

by rule, allowed to try. In this case, you’ll take a drop as well, unfortunately, it will cost you one penalty stroke. When your ball lands on/in a natural obstruction like a tree stump or pond or when your ball is impeded by out of bounds markers like a fence, you’ll have to make a choice between playing the ball as it lies or announcing an unplayable lie. By announcing an unplayable lie, you may now drop within two club lengths of the spot the ball is/where it entered the penalty area, you may return to the spot you last hit, or you may turn 180 degrees from the line of the ball and flag and drop anywhere on that line - in all cases not moving closer to the hole and taking one penalty stroke. This is just the beginning of what can be some very complicated rulings that are difficult even for seasoned golfers, but now you are one step closer to understanding. Next edition, we’ll explore the Range!

I became involved in Eagles Mere Country Club when I met my wife Carrie in the 1990s. Her family (the Craig/Haenn Family) had been coming to the mountain for about fifty years at that point and were members of the club. Carrie and I had our wedding reception at the club in September 1999 and we became members shortly thereafter.

Other than the course itself, my favorite thing about EMCC are the members. It’s a small and close community of folks who know and care about each other and like to have fun together.

The member-member golf tournament in late July is my favorite event. It’s always great to compete and have fun with other guys you may not spend a lot of time with on the mountain.

The Road to Eagles MereEach month we’ll get to know the membership a bit better in this new feature.

Page 5: Eagles Mere Country Club · 3/1/2020  · Player plays his/her own ball against another individual with each hole counting as one point. 1 Better-Ball of 4/Individual Key: Men's,

We enjoyed a wonderful Presidents Day weekend on the mountain. It was great to have a packed house for the Valentine’s dinner. Thank you all for attending our dinner service on Saturday and brunch on Sunday. We are open still every other Saturday evening in March. Please check the schedule. The staff and I are eager to get the season started and look forward to seeing everyone here at the club hopefully with some warmer weather and sunshine. We are busy refreshing the clubhouse for the upcoming season. We are also starting to put our events for the season together in a booklet for you to refer to.

Chef Scott has been preparing his new and delicious entrées so stop by and enjoy one of our Featured Meals. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions or if you will need other options for your dinner, and we will be happy to prepare something for you.

This year we will celebrate St. Patrick’s day on Saturday March 14th. Please join us for drink features and our Irish specials that Chef Scott and his staff will be preparing to celebrate the holiday. Look for more information in this newsletter. Also, bring your friends and family to Eagles Mere Country Club for our delicious Easter Buffet which we will be serving on April 21st from 12 to 3. We are also open Friday and Saturday night for Easter weekend. The Easter Buffet menu is listed in this newsletter.

Check our calendar for all of our upcoming events. I would like to remind everyone the importance of calling ahead early to make your reservations as soon as possible, as many of our events have filled up very fast and to make realistic dining reservations for the time you wish to be seated as we will ask you to be seated at your requested time for dinner to ensure great service and to give the kitchen staff proper time for preparing your meals. Your delay in being seated creates a problem for the diners following you. Thank you in advance for this courtesy. If you have any suggestions or requests for the upcoming season please send me an e-mail or let me know when I stop by your table to make sure you are having a great dining experience. Please let me know if something is not to your satisfaction so I can correct it for you.

We are still out of jacket season until Memorial Day weekend so the dress code is resort casual, and tasteful denim without rips or holes and not overly baggy or worn is accepted at all times in the clubhouse. I look forward to visiting your table!

Have a great March and April. Hope to see you soon!

From the Golf Committee

When Eagles Mere Country Club members and guests pick up a scorecard, clearly printed in the front is “A William S. Flynn Design.” Whom, pray tell, is William Flynn? William Flynn is the golf architect who designed, redesigned and constructed our Eagles Mere Country Club course. Flynn’s name will be of increasing importance to EMCC this upcoming golf season as we host the June 11 Architect Series honoring Flynn and The new Flynn Cup over Labor Day weekend. Our Course was actually constructed in three phases: the first six holes (today’s 1# through #5 and #18) opened in the 1913; an additional 3 holes (#6, #16 and #17) were

added in 1916; five more holes added by 1918; and the full eighteen-hole course was completed with the last four holes (#8, #9, #10 and #11) by 1923.When the original six holes opened, they generated great interest in golf in Eagles Mere. Based on a solid reputation earned for his work at Merion Golf Club near Philadelphia, Eagles Mere hired William Flynn to come to the mountaintop to plan an expansion from the original six to nine holes. Following this successful work, Flynn was subsequently engaged to complete his design and the construction of the remaining nine holes (five by 1918 and the remaining four by 1923). Of the fifty-six courses crafted by Flynn, EMCC was his third course design. Other notable Flynn-designed

venues include Cherry Hills CC (Denver), The Country Club (Brookline, MA), Country Club of Harrisburg, Lancaster Country Club, Lehigh Country Club, Indian Creek (FL) Pocono Manor, and Shinnecock Hills.Born in 1890, William Flynn, like many before him, left his native Massachusetts in his late teens to find his true calling in Philadelphia. Wayne Morrison in his book, Nature Faker, an extensive tribute to Flynn, writes, “Flynn came to Philadelphia as a hired contractor but through a remarkable work ethic evolved into an extraordinary agronomist, golf course superintendent and finally golf course architect.” While Flynn’s course architecture business had him traveling to many areas of the U.S., he maintained his home in Philadelphia until he died in 1945. William Flynn was a naturalist in his approach to golf architecture and he routed his golf courses to use as much of the natural features on hand as possible. There is no better example of this approach than EMCC. As Morrison further described, “Long before giant bulldozers and bigger budgets allowed the moving of great quantities of earth to shape the land to the architect’s vision, Flynn envisioned what nature provided. When he needed to create strategy or simply provide drainage, he did so in a way that mimicked nature. Studying a Flynn course requires careful consideration because unlike many early architects, Flynn tried to hide much of his work, especially in the mid-bodies of holes, by making his architectural constructs appear natural.“ EMCC players should note Flynn’s imagination in his routing of holes, particularly #10 through #14, where he offered a variety of contours and shapes, while he carefully positioned his green locations to fit the natural setting. As William Flynn approached his work and design at EMCC, his greatest accomplishment may have been his exceptional routing and constructing new holes on a very challenging terrain. “The construction of the new

holes on the original course grounds was an arduous task,” describes Wayne Morrison. “All the holes had to be cut out of dense forest and thousands of tons of stone removed. … The removal of these impediments, including the cavities remaining after tree removal, left numerous subtle fairway depressions and rolls, which remain part of the challenge at Eagles Mere Country Club. The lies can be far from level so that precise ball striking is necessary to get around in a score approaching one’s handicap.Unlike other courses of its day, Eagles Mere Country Club did not pile the stones in areas of play and cover them with turf thus creating “chocolate drops” that was fashionable for a time. Many of the stones were placed in piles in areas out of play or used in the creation of walls that line a number of holes including the first, fifth, sixth, seventh and twelfth.”Another great attribute of Flynn was his routing of holes on a course to provide variety and interest, and this is especially evident at EMCC. Note the elevation changes of our four unique par 3s: #4 a short iron approach; #9 a demanding 200 yard plus downhill hole; #12 also downhill at 180 yards and #16 a steep uphill 135 yard hole. As golfers, we need to appreciate that routing a golf course is the basis for all that is to follow. Desmond Muirhead wrote, “Routing is the bones, everything else is flesh.” Flynn may very well have been the greatest router of golf courses of all time. William Flynn was a talented golf architect who designed a course to challenge all aspect of a golfer’s game regardless of their skill level. Flynn suggested, “The principal consideration of the architect is to design his course in such a way as to hold the interest of the player from the first tee to the last green and to present the problems of the various holes in such a way that they register in the player’s mind as he stands on the tee or on the fairway for the shot to the green.”

He continues, ” … the Architect’s job is to provide eighteen distinctly different problems or types of holes insofar as it is possible to do so. Problems that hold the interest of the player that offer an incentive and provide a reward for his best golf whether he be the low handicap man or the one who shoots well over a hundred.” This summary can be so well applied to the challenge offered by our EMCC Course. As legendary sports caster Jack Whittaker noted, “… William Flynn’s contribution was enormous, not so much in the number of his designs, but in the quality of them. Unlike the misty origins of golf, William Flynn emerges clearly and takes his honored place among those wonderful men who have left us legacies of beauty and pleasure.”EMCC is indebted to our forefathers who had the vision to hire William Flynn before he became an accomplished architect to design and build our special layout. Taking the land as he found it, Flynn carved the holes of EMCC out of deep forest and rugged terrain to produce a course we never tire from playing. Being privileged to have EMCC a Flynn-designed course, the career inventory of courses now attributed to William Flynn is among the strongest of any architect. Steve RyanGolf Committee ChairP.S. – the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) has selected EMCC, as one of five venues, to host a one-day event honoring William Flynn on Thursday, June 11. Look for future details describing how EMCC members can be involved in this event.EMCC will honor William Flynn as well over Labor Day weekend on Saturday, September 5th for the inaugural Flynn Cup, a Stableford event with fun social activities. Additional information will be forthcoming to our EMCC membership.

Dear Members,

We are in for an exciting 2020! The PGA Merchandise Show was a huge success, the Golf Shop is receiving some TLC during renovations, our committees are devising and implementing great ideas, and there seems to be a new sense of energy at the Club. As amazing as Eagles Mere Country Club is, we are committed to constant improvement. We want every experience and trip to the grounds to excite you and make you proud to be a part of our premier club.

The PGA Show proved fruitful as we were able to meet with over 50 vendors and complete a high percentage of the buying. Some new and exciting offerings include:

• Lots of USA gear in anticipation of the Olympics (July 24) and Ryder Cup (Sept. 25)

• New lifestyle pieces including coats from Sunice, gym gear from Adidas, Ladies' dresses from Mahi Gold, Ladies' apparel from JoFit, Men's belts from Doc Murphy and more...

• New EMCC hats/styles from Ahead, Imperial, and Ouray! • Gift items including leather goods, coffee mugs, magnets,

playing cards, keychains, and much more... • Pickleball gear and apparel with "EMCC Pickleball" art

WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM (WHS) Update:

There is already some confusion amongst recreational golfers and our membership. Let us take a look at the new process to try to understand it better…

The WHAT: The WHS was designed to combine eight different systems into one universal world-wide handicap system.

The WHERE: All across the world!

The WHO: This decision comes straight from the USGA and R&A – it is the new standard and we must adopt.

The WHEN: The WHS is now in use and will be live at EMCC starting April 1.

The WHY: The USGA, R&A and other handicap associations wanted to make all course ratings, handicapping, and calculations universal. While the handicap system is not perfect (and never has been), it is the conduit that allows golfers of all skill levels to play a fair match – it is also one of the main reasons golf is unlike many other sports. Even a high-handicapper can play a professional using handicaps to make an even match. How many other sports can say that? I personally would not want to challenge Tony Romo, John Elway, or Brett Favre to a football throwing contest (much less actually play football against them), but I can play them in golf. Romo holds a +3.3 handicap, John Elway a 0.9, and Brett Favre a 1.1. With these numbers, anyone can calculate individual course handicaps to “level the playing field.”

The HOW: In order to calculate COURSE HANDICAP, players may go to: https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/course-handicap-calculator.html. You will need to know your HANDICAP INDEX, the COURSE RATING, SLOPE RATING, and PAR – these metrics will calculate your course handicap. So, what are all of these and where does one find them? ⚫ COURSE HANDICAP – The handicap a player will use at a given course from a given tee determined by calculator using: ⚫ INDEX – Can be found through the Golf Shop handicap computer, the ghin.com website, or on the NEW GHIN app. ⚫ COURSE RATING, SLOPE RATING, & PAR – Can be found on the scorecard of the course you played or can be accessed through the GHIN archive on our handicap computer, website, or app.

The Golf Professional staff will be ready to answer any questions – please do not hesitate to ask the staff for help. We are working on how ways to better communication this and serve you.

Above is the incoming, limited-edition “USA” line from Arizona Manufacturing & Embroidery (AM&E) – we also have a new club design with an embossed heat stamp! Below is a picture of the new pickleball art for t-shirts and long sleeves from Imperial. The last picture is Mahi Gold – a women’s lifestyle brand with classy prints for dresses to take from the beach to cocktail parties to the country club!

Yes, your handicap will change, but fear not – everyone’s will change! The big difference in Course Handicap is that it is now calculated using course rating, slope rating, AND PAR. Par for the course was not previously used. For example, since the green tees are rated at 65.5 and par for the course is 71, there is already -5.5 difference in rating vs. par.

How will this affect you? Let’s try to break it down... Player A has a current index is 20.9. This 20.9 index equates to a 16 course handicap based on the green tees course rating of 65.5, slope rating of 116, and par of 71. In years past, this player may have been a 21 course handicap. Player B has a current index of 3.2. This 3.2 now equates to a +2 where in the past the player may have been a 3 course handicap. In both cases, player A would receive 18 strokes! See calculation below:

Two player teams play one better-ball of partners against the field.

Also called "better-ball of partners (BBOP), match-play," two teams of two players square off.Players form a team to make one score. All players play their own ball and the best score is used for the team score. Variations include 1 BB orf 4, 2 BB of 4, 3 BB of 4 or progressives like 123 BB of 4 or by par.Stableford is a way to award points for different scores. Most play 5 pts./double eagle, 4 pts./eagle, 3 pts./birdie, 2 pts./par, 1 pt./bogey, 0 pts./double bogey or higher. Variations include modifying the point structure to greater reward birdies/eagles. Format also allows ability to pick up at double bogey+.Teams are comprised of two players playing for one score. Both players tee off and the better drive is determined. The player who did not hit this drive, hits the second shot. Team plays alternate shot until the ball is holed. Modification allows for both players to tee off, then hit each others second shot, and choose the best ball to be played as alternate shot until holed.

League play where each day has a different format.Players form a team to make one score. All players tee off and select the best drive. All other balls are taken to this spot. All players hit again and continue this process until the ball is holed.

Player plays his/her own ball and hole out on every hole to post a individual score against the field.

Player plays his/her own ball against another individual with each hole counting as one point.

Hi EMCC! We have fresh snow on the ground here, but rest assured, it will be golf and pickleball season soon enough! Here on the mountain, we are busily tackling our miles long, off season to do list.

My very favorite item remaining on that list is preparing for our 2nd Annual Easter Carnival, Egg Hunt, and Lunch happening Saturday, April 11th. Besides giving me an excuse to wear bunny ears to work. I get to watch EMCC kids play games, do crafts, and chase down Easter eggs filled with tokens. As a parent, what I love about our hunt is that our participants can “spend” their found tokens on full size candy bars or on great prizes like Matchbox cars. This means, less candy in the house. My other favorite thing is that if we have horrible weather,

we have a large indoor space to hold our hunt, meaning our fun plans aren’t canceled because of rain, and I’m not stuck scrubbing mud off of previously clean shoes all in the name of egg hunt fun.

My other exciting task of the off season is creating our 2020 Summer Guide. It’s a lot of work to cram an entire summer of fun into one booklet. Look for yours in the mail in May.

See you on the mountain! Kim

EMCC Members, celebrate with GAP its summer long Architect Series honoring William S.Flynn!

The Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) is honoring William Flynn, the designer of EMCC, with a unique series of five one-day outings at the below pictured historic Flynn-design courses including our own EMCC. All EMCC members are invited to register to play in all five events, which include golf, lunch, tee gifts and a closing dinner at Rolling Green. The cost for the entire five events is $1,200. In the event you cannot make all of these dates and/or you would like to share the cost among other GAP members, GAP is permitting anyone who registers to substitute another player for a given day. Consider teaming up with one or two other EMCC members and share in the Architect Series experience, if that is preferred.

Registration is first-come, first-serve. Sign up at www.gapgolf.org. For more information on this Series, please contact John Manos at 610-687-2340 ext.22 or via email at [email protected], or call the EMCC Golf Shop at (570) 525-3475 ext.1.

Worth the Drive

Last summer, I did a piece on a business opening in Williamsport, The Hatchet House. Since then, I’ve been there. I had to share an update with you. The Hatchet House has become an incredibly popular place to go in the area, and I know why! When you go, you’ll be paired with an “axepert” who will teach you what you need to know for a safe night of axe throwing fun and competition. This is a great place to go for a date night or with a group. Their customer service is outstanding, and the atmosphere is lively and fun. Just make sure you wear closed toed shoes, and make

a reservation. They take walk ins, but I wouldn’t risk it. They sell out. Stop for a six pack on your way if you’re so inclined. The Hatchet House is BYOB.

Happening LocallyThis is just a very small sample of some of the great things going on in the area that I gathered from calendars that have come through the office. I wish I could include everything!
