The Great Backyard Bird

Count is February 14-17, 2020 Bird watchers of all ages count birds to create a real-time snapshot of where birds are.

Recurring Programs All recurring programs are free with park admission.

Saturdays:

Nature Discovery Class, 1:30pm at the Earth Discovery Center. Stop by on Saturdays for a fun nature activity! Topics vary - possible activities may include: nature hikes, pond life, simple crafts, and more!

Raptor Feeding Time, 2:30pm at the Ornithology Center. Join a naturalist as we feed one or more of our birds of prey. Feeding only takes a few minutes so don’t be late!

Sundays:

Sunday Morning Birdwalk, 9:00am-11:00am at the Ornithology Center. Join a group of experienced and new birders for a brisk morning bird walk! Meets every Sunday morning, rain or shine. The walk is not geared toward children, but they are welcome to attend.

Feeding Time, 1:30pm-2:00pm at the Earth Discovery Center. Watch as our educational reptiles, amphibians and other critters enjoy their lunch!

Meet A Raptor, 2:30pm-3pm at the Ornithology Center. Join us to discover the world of raptors! You’ll meet our birds of prey and learn what makes them raptors.

Fridays:

Story Time on the Reservoir, 9:30am-10:30am at the Earth Discovery Center. After reading a nature-themed story, participants will be able to visit stations at their own pace. Stations will vary but may include puppets, coloring pages, artifacts with a naturalist, or additional books. This program is best suited for preschool and kindergarten, but early elementary students are welcome to join.

Feeder Watch or Migration Game, 4:00pm-4:30pm at the Ornithology Center. Depending on the weather, the activity will be an indoor Feeder Watch or outdoor Migration Game (ages 6-12). Feeder Watch includes watching our bird feeders, counting & identifying birds, coloring, and/or nature journaling. Migration Game is an obstacle course that teaches about migratory birds and the hazards they face.

Feb 4 (Tues): Homeschool Ornithology Club-Woodpeckers and Honeyguides, 10am-12pm at the Ornithology Center. Perfect for the young naturalist or budding ornithologist! We will learn about different birds each week! Each class will consist of a lesson, bird count, activities and a snack. $40/student for 5 class series, ages 10-14, #21113.

Feb 5 (Wed): Volunteer Coffee Talk, 8:30am at the Earth Discovery Center. Join us the first Wed of every month for an environmental presentation. A great chance to meet volunteers and learn more about volunteer opportunities. Everyone welcome! Free with park admission.

Feb 8 (Sat): Bird Coloring Party, 11am-3pm at the Ornithology Center. What can be more relaxing than coloring and watching birds? Color different pictures of birds while getting the chance to watch them eat at our bird feeders. Free with park admission.

Feb 12 (Wed): Love Birds, 2pm-3pm at the Ornithology Center. Learn about the birds that are already building their nests and their unique courtship dances! Celebrate the day with bird-themed Valentine's Day cards and other fun crafts! Perfect for the entire family. Free with park admission.

Feb 15 & 16 (Sat & Sun): Great Backyard Bird Count, Sat. 10am-10:30am & 2pm-2:30pm, Sun. 2pm-2:30pm at the Ornithology Center. Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time. Find out more information at http://gbbc.birdcount.org. Join our naturalists to count the birds

from the reservoir and bird feeder rooms. Learn about ways you can attract birds to your backyard. No birding experience required! Free with park admission.

Feb 18 (Tues): Hike & Seek-Marina Trail, 10:30am-11:30am beginning at the Earth Discovery Center. Designed to be an immersive experience for preschoolers. There is no set theme for these hikes. We’ll hike at the pace of our tiniest walkers, stopping to investigate things that interest us along the way. Children best interact with nature when they are not confined to a stroller. If your child can walk, please plan to leave the stroller at home or in the car. Free with park admission.

Feb 20 (Thurs): Little Ducklings-Small Birds, 10:30am-11:30am at the Ornithology Center. Learn ways to engage your preschooler in nature and encourage their curiosity. Topics will be introduced through hands-on activities, hikes, stories, and take-home ideas. Meets one Thursday per month, snack usually included! Fee applies to child, but a caregiver/adult must stay for the program. No drop-offs. Ages 2-6, $5/class, $16/series of 4, #21109-class, #21105-series.

Feb 26 (Wed): Wednesday Wildlife, 3:30pm-4:30pm at the Earth Discovery Center. Join us at for a chance to meet some of our educational animals up close, and learn what you can do to protect our native wildlife. Our educational ambassadors can include invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, and we'll try to bring out at least one of our mammals. Free with park admission; donations towards the care of the animals always welcome.

Don’t miss our Annual Woodcarver Exhibition, March 14th & 15th,

2020 at the Earth Discovery Center! Artists will be on hand to answer

questions and demonstrate their skills. Watch as master wood-

workers demonstrate their expert skill and craftsmanship! Test your

own carving skills at our soap carving station. Works will be for sale,

but exhibition is free with park admission.
