The East Asia Core Observatories Associa2on (EACOA) is an alliance of four major astronomical research ins2tu2ons in East Asia dedicated to promote regional research coopera2on. Member ins2tutes of the EACOA are; the Na2onal Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Science (NAOC), the Na2onal Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Korean Astronomy and Space Science Ins2tute (KASI), and Academia Sinica Ins2tute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA). The EACOA announces an opportunity for highly qualified individuals to apply for EACOA postdoctoral fellowships, star2ng in 2014, to conduct research in all branches of astronomy and astrophysics. Successful candidates will have an ini2al appointment of three years, extendable for an addi2onal two years (up to a total of 5 years), and are expected to develop independent research programs as well as to integrate with the exis2ng ac2vi2es at the EACOA member ins2tutes. Fellows are expected to work full 2me on their research programs, and to be in residence in at least two EACOA member Ins2tu2ons during the period of the Fellowship appointment. The EACOA Fellowship is open to applicants of any na2onality, who have obtained their PhD in Astronomy or equivalent degree in the related fields within the last 5 years from the start of the fellowship tenure. For the year 2014 program, a monthly allowance of US$5,000 will be paid as a fellowship award and reloca2on expenses will be provided by the EACOA, through the NAOC. Also, research funds will be provided by the host ins2tutes. In addi2on to these, addi2onal support for travel, etc. will be available. Actual amounts of the research funds and the addi2onal supports are depending on the condi2ons set by the host ins2tute. Applica2ons submiUed before or on 15 December 2013 will receive full considera2on. Applicants should submit their applica2on documents and materials electronically as specified in the applica2on instruc2ons. Applica2ons must include leUers of endorsement from the host scien2sts confirming the research project. Up to three EACOA Fellowships will be awarded in 2014. Fellowship  Program  (July  08,  2013)

Introduc>on            To  promote  East  Asian  regional  astronomy  research  coopera2on,  the  East  Asia  Core  Observatory  Associa2on  (EACOA)  encourages  and  supports  highly  qualified  young  researchers  from  all  over  the  world  to  come  and  conduct  joint  research  ac2vi2es  with  colleagues  at  the  EACOA  member  ins2tutes.            The  EACOA  Fellowships  are  research  fellowships  at  the  postdoctoral  level.  EACOA  Fellowship  grant  is  awarded  to  support  an  individual  Fellow’s  research  program.  Fellows  are  expected  to  work  full-­‐2me  on  their  research  programs,  and  to  be  in  residence  in  at  least  two  EACOA  member  Ins2tu2ons  during  the  period  of  the  Fellowship  appointment.

I.  Eligibility  Requirements     1.  EACOA  Fellowship  applicants  can  be  of  any  na2onality,  and  must  have  obtained  their  PhD  in  Astronomy  or  equivalent  degree  in  the  related  fields  within  the  last  5  years  from  the  expected  start  date  of  the  fellowship.

2.  The  EACOA  Fellow  must  be  in  residence  in  at  least  two  EACOA  member  ins2tu2ons  during  his  or  her  fellowship  tenure  and  must  spend  at  least  one  year  at  one  ins2tute.

3.  Applicants  must  have  sufficient  conversa2onal  ability  in  English  to  prevent  difficul2es  during  their  research  ac2vi2es  at  the  EACOA  ins2tutes.  

II.  Dura>on  of  Fellowships            The  EACOA  Fellowship  is  a  3–year  appointment,  subject  to  annual  review  and  renewable  for  an  addi2onal  2  years,  up  to  a  total  of  5-­‐years.            Renewals  for  the  fourth  and  fibh  years  will  be  based  on  a  review  of  the  annual  report,  but  will  require  demonstra2on  of  significant  research  accomplishments.              Renewal  requests  will  be  reviewed  by  the  EACOA  Fellowship  Program  commiUee  and  are  subject  to  availability  of  EACOA  funds  and  approval  by  the  EACOA  Directors’  Council.    

III.  Host  Ins>tu>ons          The  EACOA  Fellows  are  free  to  select  at  least  two  host    ins2tu2ons  from  the  EACOA  member  ins2tu2ons,  in  which  to    

carry  out  their  research.  Also,  the  EACOA  Fellow  must  spend  at  least  one  year  at  one  ins2tute.  

IV.  Applica>on  Procedure            Applicants  should  obtain  the  current  issue  of  the  Fellowship  Announcement  from  the  EACOA  web  site  (hNp://naoj-­‐global.mtk.nao.ac.jp/EACOA-­‐E/fellowship/index.html).  Applica>ons  should  be  submiNed  by  online  through  the  online  submission  site:  hUps://www.asiaa.sinica.edu.tw/~EACOA/postdoc/applica2on.php

The  EACOA  Secretariat  Office  cannot  entertain  requests  for  waivers  of  the  eligibility  requirements  and  other  condi2ons,  listed  in  the  Fellowship  Announcement,  and  will  not  respond  to  such  requests.  

All  applica>on  documents  must  be  received  by  December  15,  2013,  at  the  latest.

VI.  Screening  &  No>fica>on  of  the  Result  of  Applica>on

1.  Applica2ons  are  examined  by  the  Screening  CommiUee  of  the  EACOA  on  the  basis  of  academic  value  and  the  degree  or  perfec2on  of  the  research  projects.  

2.  The  results  will  be  sent  directly  to  the  applicants  (We  expect  it  before  the  end  of  March,  2014  or  earlier).  

3.  The  EACOA  will  send  a  Grant  LeUer  to  successful  applicants.  

4.  The  EACOA  does  not  issue  announcements  concerning  the  screening  progress,  nor  will  the  EACOA  respond  to  inquiries  concerning  the  status  of  such  applica2ons.  

5.  When  the  decisions  of  the  Screening  CommiUee  are  announced,  the  EACOA  will  neither  announce  the  reasons  for  the  decision  nor  respond  to  individual  inquiry  concerning  results.  

VII.  S>pend          The  following  financial  support  is  provided  to  successful  applicants.  No  support  to  his/her  family  or  dependents  is  available.  Fellowships  are  provided  for  successful  applicants  only,  and  intended  for  necessary  living  expenses  and  research  ac2vi2es  at  the  host  ins2tutes.  Under  no  circumstances  is  any  part  of  the  fellowships  transferable  to  any  other  persons  or  other  items.            For  the  year  2014  program,  a  monthly  allowance  of  equivalent  to  US$5,000,  will  be  paid  as  a  fellowship  award  by  the  EACOA.            In  addi2on  to  this: Research  funds  will  be  provided  by  the  host  ins2tute. Reloca2on  expenses  (the  actual  amount  depending  on  the  condi2ons  set  by  the  host  ins2tute)  will  be  provided  by  the  EACOA.            Addi2onal  support  for  housing,  travel,  etc.  may  be  available  depending  on  the  condi2ons  set  by  the  host  ins2tute.
