TRANSCRIPT
Trucking is a service thatreflects the ups and downsof the economy in NorthAmerica. So it’s not unusualto see freight carriers go
through regular cycles of expansionand retrenchment.
Even so, this past year was a par-ticularly challenging one for many ofthe companies on the TransportTopics Top 100 For-Hire Carrierslist.
Soaring fuel costs and weakfreight demand led carriers to cutback on spending, lay off staff andshrink the size of their fleets.
Two carriers – Jevic Transportationand Performance TransportationServices – went out of business, along with hun-dreds, if not thousands, of smaller carriers and inde-pendent owner-operators.
Revenue for the Top 100 for-hire carriers in 2007rose 4.7%, less than half the rate of the previousyear. A total of 26 carriers reported revenue declinesin 2007, compared with 11 that saw revenue fall dur-ing 2006.
Based on results of a survey done in conjunc-tion with the collection of data for the Top 100,fleet executives are expected to rein in spendingon equipment.
Based on 64 responses, fleets say they plan tobuy an average of 209 tractors in the next 12months. That’s down 17% from the average of 252tractors purchased in the prior 12 months.
An even greater decline is expected for trailers.Fleets surveyed said they plan to buy an averageof 249 trailers in the next 12 months, comparedwith an average of 447 trailers in the previousyear.
Even in a down year, however, there werepockets of prosperity and that is also reflected inthe financial and operating performance of carrierson the 2008 Top 100 For-Hire Carriers list.
Anderson Trucking Serviceand LoneStar Transportationeach saw revenue climb morethan 20% in 2007. Both compa-nies benefited from a resur-gence of demand for flatbedand heavy specialized haulingservices as exports of U.S.-made machinery and industrialgoods boomed and domestic oiland gas drilling activityincreased in response to risingcrude oil prices.
Another flatbed carrier,Venture Transport Logistics, was taken over by private equi-ty firm Welsh, Carson,Anderson & Stowe and merged
with three oilfield haulers: Ace Transportation,Dynasty Transportation and Texas Hot Shot Co.Annual revenue for the combined companies is$563 million.
Higher fuel costs are probably here to stay and,as Senior Features Reporter Daniel P. Bearthreports, that is forcing shippers to rethink how andwhen they move freight and to consider new pack-aging and product formulations that reduce thevolume and weight of shipments.
We are likely to see, according to one expert, modal shifts in which more goods are moved viarail instead of truck, truckload instead of less-than-truckload, and ground parcel delivery instead ofair express.
Shippers also are reconsidering inventorystrategies to reduce the distance needed to movegoods from where they are made or stored towhere they are used or purchased.
As always, we expect that our readers will findthe information and analysis in the Top 100 For-Hire Carriers list to be an indispensable guide tounderstanding what’s going on.

Acknowledgments and SourcesThe 2008 TRANSPORT TOPICS Top 100 is a special project of the Transport Topics Publishing Group that features finan-
cial and operating information on the largest for-hire freight carriers in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Data werecompiled from annual reports of publicly owned companies and directly from the management of privately owned com-panies. In some cases, revenue estimates were used to determine sector rankings.
Senior Features Writer Daniel P. Bearth is the project coordinator, with assistance from research intern Andrew Chido. Thedesign is by Patrick Donlon, assistant director of art and production. Cover Design by Shawn Torres and Louisa Wimberly.
