From the Desk of Fr. Mark

Hi, everyone. It was a wonderful weekend this past week-end with huge successes around campfires, the ball diamond and duck races. Some people asked if I was licking my wounds after a defeat to Fr. Tony and the Dragons of Glan-dorf. I told them that I was licking my lips for another chance to gather people from the area to pray and play. For those who couldn't make it to the outdoor Mass and softball game, a great time was had by all. Old timers (like me) had a few sore muscles and the younger players are keeping their gloves oiled for another chance to play next year. In the year of the family, it was wonderful to gather extended families around Mass and more. People cheered for each other and the competition was not against each other, but to see if the old bat had one more hit in it. The outdoor Mass was also wonderful as we thanked the Lord for so many gifts, espe-cially calling us to be a family united. The pope may not have showed up, but the Lord was definitely there, as we were gathered in His name (I was informed that a lone dove sat on a wire all during Mass and left when the last song was sung). The campfire atmosphere brought many families out on a Friday night. The weather was perfect for marshmallows, chili and donuts, made over a fire. Families gathered to watch children use slingshots and take their first hayride. A good time was had by all, as many smiled to see the families be families. On Sunday, I went to Continental to gamble at the duck races at the local Fall Festival. I even won (and I never win). To gather as a community, and not just as a Church family, is part of what the plan of Jesus is. Fam-ily outstretches its arms beyond what we are used to. The love of the Lord causes us to reach to neighborhoods and communities beyond our places of worship. I believe this is why Pope Francis is so popular. The Lord's call to peace, unity and oneness is attractive. As God's people, we need to foster these virtues within our families and to the world. It was a great weekend and I can't help but say that we may have lost at a softball game, but so many won in what mattered. This weekend there will be more opportunities to be family. Celebrate what it means to be family within your family and the family of the world. Have a great week.

Reflection on Seeing Pope Francis The trip to Philadelphia was inspiring. There was an over-whelming sense of unity and presence of the Holy Spirit. The highlight, of course, was being in the presence of, and seeing, Pope Francis, as well as the opportunity to join in the celebra-tion of the Papal Mass. But, along with that, was being among about a million brothers and sisters in Christ to cele-brate with. We had the great pleasure to travel with and meet amazing people and witness “God moments.” Dave & Cindy Erhart

Pilgrimage to See The Pope It was great to see Pope Francis, a very humble man, in per-son. One of the most spiritually uplifting experiences in Philadelphia was attending Mass celebrated by Pope Francis and to be able to receive Holy Eucharist along with several hundred thousand other people. The peaceful, considerate, prayerful attitude of the crowd created a feeling of unity that people wished could happen throughout the world. "If 750,000 people from 100 countries could do it, why not the world?" was often heard. Another very inspiring sight was the many families with small children in strollers. The chil-dren were great! Weather was perfect! God was with us! We trusted Him. Over 350 pilgrims from the Toledo Diocese went to Philadelphia. Some went for 8 days. We went for 5 days. We were able to do some sightseeing, have Mass at the National Shrine of St. Rita and visit the beautiful Longwood Gardens. It was great sharing the trip with a wonderful cou-ple from Kalida, David and Cindy Erhart! Herm & Rita Borgelt
