1 EABAMETOONG FIRST NATION Cultural Tourism Showcase June 16-18, 2017 By Ken Caplan, Executive Producer What began as a skills-training initiative culminated in a debut tourism event for this historic Ojibway community. Coordinated planning and a commitment to develop the economic capacity of Eabametoong First Nation created a springboard for tourism development and the first steps towards a sustainable economy. Friday June 16 The visitors departed Pearson Airport, Toronto via WestJet in two groups on Friday and Saturday to accommodate personal schedules. The first group included Astra Rose and Mehdi Amin from Markham, Henri Aghaei from Lindsay, Pat Ballantyne from Waterloo, and Ken Caplan from Toronto, the Showcase Executive Producer. The first leg of the flight to Thunder Bay took two hours. The travellers checked in at the North Star Airline counter at Thunder Bay Airport before being shuttled to the nearby North Star terminal. The connecting charter, a Pilateus nine passenger single-prop aircraft, left shortly for the one-hour journey to Eabametoong. The visitors arrived about 2:30 pm. They checked through the arrival terminal and went straight to Eabametoong Inn where they were greeted by indigenous drummers who performed a traditional Ojibway welcome. The guests received unique identification lanyards designed by Lucille Atlookan, an Eabametoong student living in Thunder Bay and tote bags created under the new EFN product label KASKii™. Inside, the Inn’s manager, Charlotte Baxter, registered guests for their rooms. The Inn’s modest but cozy surroundings are a popular meeting place for everyone in the community and the hearty meals, from bacon, eggs and home fries to succulent moose ribs, keep everyone coming back.
