Discussion Questions:

1. After moving from a big city to a rural setting, Janice is suffering from anxiety and depression because of adjustments to the change. She wants to seek counseling services to help her adjust. Janice has always valued her privacy and is finding it difficult to commit to seeing a counselor in a rural setting. The community has only one mental health counselor. Janice fears that if she begins counseling sessions, people will learn that she is undergoing therapy. In addition, Janice is a devoted Catholic and is aware that the counselor is a devout Jehovah’s Witness, as is most of the community. Janice is apprehensive that the counselor might try to encourage her to convert. She is desperate to talk to someone and does not know where to turn.a. Identify the ethical standards, specific to Janice’s

concerns, which the counselor should follow to provide professional and ethical services.

b. Why are the ethical standards important for client progress?

Discussion Questions:

1. A clinical psychologist and a mental health counselor are collaborating on a highly controversial experiment on memory and human behavior. The subjects in the study are likely to suffer unusual effects from the experimental medication, which can alter their memory function and perhaps wipe out their long-term memory. Due to this, the clinical psychologist and the mental health counselor have decided to keep the experiment secret.

The psychologist ropes in unsuspecting college students as subjects for the study. She lies to them that the research study is based on the benefits of a vitamin supplement and that she is willing to pay $100.00 per subject for the short 2-hour

Page 7

Page 8: E7231 - Argosy Universitydissertation.argosy.edu/chicago/Fall07/PSY430_F07Lewis.doc  · Web view7.2. Analyze the importance of effective nonverbal communication skills in developing

study.

When the subjects meet the mental health counselor for the treatment, he too withholds the truth from them. The mental health counselor is aware of the deception but because the psychologist is the primary researcher, he does not feel responsible for the ethical violation.a. Identify the ethical codes for research subjects that the

psychologist is violating.b. Identify the ethical codes for ethical conduct and

responsibility that the mental health counselor is violating.

2. According to R. F. Kitchener, if standards of professional behavior are to exist, mental health professionals should be capable of providing a rational explanation for every action, i.e. whether it is ethical or unethical. As a result, he points out that ethical relativism is indefensible.a. Do you agree with the statement? Why or why not?b. Summarize, in your own words, why each model does or

does not suit the mental health profession.

3. Read the following conversation between three mental health therapists:

Luke: Sometimes, I find it really difficult to make decisions. I am often compelled to breach the confidentiality of the client because not doing so would harm the client.

Nancy: Yes, I understand what you are saying. And, sometimes, clients show us no respect. They expect us to always find solutions to their problems. As if we’re

All sources must be documented through normal scholarly references/citations and all work must be submitted using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition (2001). Washington DC: American Psychological Association (APA) format. Please refer to Appendix A in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition for thesis and paper format. Scholarly writing: The faculty at Argosy University is dedicated to providing a learning environment that supports scholarly and ethical writing, free from academic dishonesty and plagiarism. This includes the proper and appropriate referencing of all sources. Turnitin compares submitted papers to billions of pages of content and provides a comparison report to your instructor.
