Brief Functional DescribtionThe E522.41 is a USB 2.0 compatible power supply with protection
features for the automotive environment. Protection includes
ISO7637 pulses on the input, as well as short to battery/ground
and 2kV ESD (HBM) on the USB bus and data lines.
An I2C interface allows system setup and diagnostics in real time via
external microprocessor. Three different I2C bus system addresses
are decoded by pin ADR.
An internal Switch-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) provides efficient
USB 5V supply from either vehicle battery or a lower voltage bus rail.
Selectable soft power-up sequence protects the external parts from
overload and reduces inrush currents. The switching frequency can
be synchronized in Master-Slave configurations with other devices
via PLL input. In addition the switchable spread spectrum option
reduces EMI.
The E522.41 supports USB charging downstream loads according
to the Battery Charging Specification Revision 1.2 and various other
specific USB charger emulations.
Compensation of current induced wire losses along the USB cableThe E522.41 implements two different strategies to prevent
brown-out at the USB receptacle. The output voltage can be raised
to a higher fixed level, or it can track the load current.
1. BUS can be raised to the maximum specified level of typ. 5.15V.
2. Negative Resistance Programming (NRP) implements a current
dependent voltage gain on BUS.
Application parameters VBUS and IOUT can be checked by an
external microcontroller during operation via I2C and the voltage gain
corrected without BUS reset.
Automotive Robustness Features The E522.41 has been especially designed with automotive
robustness requirements in mind:
Open drain output flag INTB signals system errors an warnings
and can be used as an interrupt by an external microcontroller
A set of maskable, internal warning or interrupt events indicate
critical system conditions
The supply voltage SUP, SW and BUS is monitored for over and
under-voltage. Observation of reference voltage and temperature
protection.
The internal high-side switch is independently short-circuit
protected, to prevent a short in the external freewheeling diode.
Gate-voltage monitoring of the switching FET issues a warning in
case of critically low system voltage.
Short to GND and VBAT protection for BUS and data lines.
To protect against VBUS overvoltage in case of an open circuit at
the current sense resistor, an internal bypass resistor will limit the
output voltage.
The SMPS supports an active discharge current of the external
VBUS capacitor to provide a safe power-down function.
This allows an active BUS reset for the portable device or change
of the port characteristics.
