Finance Tracks at Salisbury

• In addition to the major in Finance, the Purdue Business School offers specialization finance tracks in:– Financial Planning,– Investments, and – Corporate Finance

Financial Planning Track

• The Financial Planning Track is registered with  Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board) in Denver, CO. 

• In September 2002, we became the first undergraduate degree program in Financial Planning registered in the State of Maryland.

• Allows our graduates to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination upon completion of our program.

• Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and , in the U.S, which it awards to individuals who successfully complete initial and ongoing certification requirements.

• Career Opportunities. – Employment with existing FP Firms, Banks, Law

Practices, etc.

– Potential for lucrative and rewarding self employment.

• Pitch unique blend of “working in finance and helping people.”

Directors Activities

• Visit local high school counselors, advisors and administrators to increase visibility of FP track.

• Network with regional community colleges – Deans of Occupational Education

• University Accepted - Undecided Student Letters.“On behalf of the faculty at The Perdue School of Business, please accept my hardiest congratulations on your admission to our university. We at the Perdue School are excited about the possibility that you will elect to study business with us. Also, I want to bring to your attention the many advantages of pursuing a career as a financial planner.”

Director’s Activities (more)

• Develop relationships with area FP Firms– Internships.

• Visit local FP firms to encourage the creation of “meaningful” student internships. Emphasize advantages for both student and the firm.

• All students are different and so are FP firms. The “fit” is important.

– Enlist FP Firm officers to help recruit potential FP students.

• Existing employees who aspire to career advancement. • College bound children of FP firm’s employees.• Possible CE credit for auditing or taking for credit FP courses.

• Teaching– Use selected, motivated FP professionals as “in-class”

guest speakers.

– Use the WEB to supplement FP texts and to provide excitement and realism.

• Local TV News –Befriend Anchors/Reporters– Fill spots with FP and related topics.

– Plug program, school and university in the process.

Director’s Activities (and more)

• Cultivate a close relationship with the Financial Planning Association of Maryland.– Fall 2003 meeting of the FPA of MD held on the SU

campus was a little disappointing. – Since Spring 2004 meeting of the FPA of MD have

been much better.– Meetings address issues of mutual interest to both FP

professionals and our FP students.

• In the future, we hope to host more business meetings of the MD FPA on our campus.

Student Activities Post Graduation

• Many students reluctant to take positions selling product and many want to delay employment until fall after graduation.

• Employers encourage students to take SEC series exams so they can sell securities, etc.

• Therefore, only one graduate has taken CFP® Certification Examination to date.

In Conclusion

In the long run, we all know that

student placement and the pass

rate on the CFP® Certification

Examination will determine

whether or not the FP track at

Salisbury University has been

successful. GOOD NEWS!!!

The first SU student to take the

CFP Board Exam passed this

spring.
