Thank You!
This year at the Outback Fundraiser, we hit an all time high. We
served nearly 500 people in two hours and raised over 13,000 to
support vital services at the John George Home. It is so amazing to be
a part of a community that loves to celebrate the health and well-being
of our seniors. Pat Chadwell and his crew provided excellent service
during the event and 100% of all the proceeds went directly to the
John George Home. Thank you for coming out and spending time
with us. Your support is so very important and we appreciate your
donation, your time and your belief in what we do. Next year, the
event will look different, so please keep your eyes and ears open for
the details. Please stop in the Outback for dinner and extend a special
thanks to Pat for his willingness to help.
It’s time to celebrate! The new addition is finally complete
and we are ready to show it off. We
would love to have you join us for our
Open House on October 24, 2013 from
5-7pm. There will be full tours of the
facility and light snacks. The residents
are looking forward to sharing their
home with you and thanking you for
your generosity. Please join us for
the party. We have waited a long
time to be able to show you
the progress!
Bo was born in Jackson Michigan, to Madge and
Houston Jones. His dad retired from Clark
Equipment and his mother was a homemaker. He
graduated from Vandercook Lake and was All
Conference in Football. He was a left half back but
wasn't heavy enough to make it to the big time. He
was very athletic and also played four years of
baseball, basketball and track. “I was pretty fast”.
Bo had five children and is very proud of all of
them. His daughters are happily married, which
makes him feel good. His sons, Rocky and Ricky,
love to hunt and fish. Bo enjoys spending time with
them doing what they love. He also mentioned that
his other son Rex, works for Homeland Security,
which makes him feel safe. He has 10 grandchildren
and he loves them all.
When asked what was Bo’s proudest
accomplishment, he mentioned with emotion, that he
is 25 years sober. “I made a lot of mistakes in my
life, but staying sober was the smartest choice I
made.” After graduation he went to work at Clark
Equipment, like his dad, and became the time
keeper. He said he was responsible for making
sure all of the men were working and on time. We
laughed about this because now that he is retired,
he is very slow and often late to everything.
I asked Bo what he likes most about living at the
John George Home and he said “I love having a
place to live with so many different people; all of
the guys are good to me and the staff care about
us”.
When asked for any closing thoughts for the
readers, he said “hope is real, look at me.”
The new and improved website has arrived! We are so excited to share the new look with you.
The name is the same but the website has changed. We have added a lot more content and tons
of pictures. We want you to feel more connected to the Home and to the men. You will have
access to information that you may have missed and will be able to update yourself on current
events. Please let us know what you think; we welcome your input. Don’t forget to like us on
FACEBOOK as well, we are trying very hard to share all of our cool events, stories and
memories. We are now able to accept credit card donations on-line too!

The following was written by Audrey Hepburn,
who was asked to share "beauty tips."
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her
fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you
never walk alone.
People, even more than things, have to be
restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and
redeemed; never throw out anyone.
Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end
of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will realize why you have
two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.
Loneliness doesn't just cause wear and tear on the psyche — it may also affect blood pressure. University of Chicago researchers surveyed 229 people ages 50 to 68 who were part of the Chicago Health, Aging and Social Relations Study, a multi-year study of white, black and Latino men and women. Participants were asked to rate their feelings about statements such as "I lack companionship," "I feel in tune with the people around me" and "My social relationships are superficial." Other features about the participants were noted, such as smoking status, physical activity levels, body mass index and cardiovascular health.
The participants were monitored for five years. People who ranked as feeling most lonely had blood pressure levels 14.4 points higher than those who felt the least lonely. Increases in systolic blood pressure were cumulative, so those who had higher levels of loneliness at the beginning of the study had greater blood pressure increases over the years. The findings held true when researchers accounted for factors such as age, race and ethnicity, gender, cardiovascular risk factors and depression. -Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
So, I guess what I am trying to say is spend more time with your friends, get involved with social groups or clubs, be a part of a volunteer group or church crowd. Loneliness is a real factor among our seniors but is true with any age. Find that one friend who thinks you are funny, and spend more time!
