PeaksIsland - Continued from front page

This enjoyable weekend st:'1Ttedwhen twofriends called to say that they were on theirway from Wisconsin. "Fine," I told them."Bring your running shoes and we will drivefrom Castine to Portland for a race on an

island!" They were quick to tell me that this isa well known race and that they would lookforward to stretching their legs after the planeride. (He is 6'6"; she is 5'1".)

Ruth and Ray Heff1efingerbed andbreakfasted us, and since they were activemembers of the Maine Track Club which

sponsored the race, we arose early to catch theferry.

Peaks Island is just a short ferry ride intoCasco Bay, and a most unusual method oftransportation to a race; surely much moreplea~ant than travelling in a steamy bus to aremote starting line miles into the countryside.

Once docked at the Peaks Island wharf, amultitude of runners swarmed off the boat and

up the hill to be welcomed by a crowd ofislanders. The festive atmosphere wa~conta-gious, and shared by runners, volunteers, andmembers of the Island Lion's Club who arethe annual hosts for the race and the fmnous

lobster dinner follQwingthe run.The race started on time. The course was

not flat and fast. It was casually described by

Start of Peaks Islmld 5-Miler

past competitors as "beautiful, great views, cool sea breezes, you will love it!" In reality,it is a very technical course that requires paceand control.

The first hill appeared too soon and it wastoo sustained for the slow starter. Several hills

later, and a~we heated up to the run, weentered a cool lane of pine trees and the smellofbalsmI1. Suddenly, we were on the edge ofthe Atlantic. The rocky shore, wild roses andcool salty spray were a tempting invitation tolinger.

At four and a half slow miles, sweaty andfeeling too good, I thought to myself that itwas time to kick it in! This did not happen, asa sudden, steep hill with it~1l0wnside, played atune on my "strings," restraining me frompassing my Wisconsin friend.

The spectators at the finish line made mefeel like a winner.

Later, when the awards were presented ona scenic grassy plateau overlooking the harbor,I received an age division award; a small, beautifully executed pottery seal. It now sitson a shelf next to one of Henry Thoreau'sbooks on Maine.

Following the awards, the Lion's Clubwas ready with their famous lobster dinner, topping off a memorable day in the life of arunner.

Cool winds were kicking up as we roadthe feny back to the mainland; the ride wastoo short w;runners shared racing experiences, and some were heard to say, "A memorable

race-see you next year."(Tom Miller is 'currently the World

Duathalon Age Division Champion, havingwon the title in Frankfurt, Germany in June1992. He will be defending his title on October15, 1993 in Dallas, Texas.

He has been elected to the TriFed All-

American Teamfor the past two years. He is aformer Portland resident, now

living in Arizona and Maine.)

Women's FitnessMenopause Doesn't Affect Fitness

Tests conducted on a group of womenmasters runners show that although aerobiccapacity decreases with age, a woman'smenopausal status has no influence on theextent of this decline. According to ChristineWells, PhD, and colleagues at Arizona StateUniversity in Tempe, "premenopausal, transitional, and postmenopausal women werenot significantly different on any exercisevariable when age and/or training differences"were accounted for. Aging, along with reducedactivity, account for drops in fitness duringmenopausal years. (Medicine and Science inSport') and Exercise, taken from Running andFitNews, May 1993.)
