THE question in everyone’s mind inthe lead up to last weekend’s StateChampionships was ‘how bad is theweather going to be?’ It turned outthat the dire predictions of the Bureaudidn’t materialise and apart from highhumidity the conditions were good.

The record number of entries in this34th Championship year was a goodomen for great competition and asidefrom a few last minute injuries every-one fronted up determined to do theirbest. It was particularly enjoyablecatching up with fellow athletes fromAlbany, Bunbury, Broome and pointsin between.

With ECAC closed for renovationthe entirety of the programme was atWAAS. The 10,000m and Steeple-chase evenings saw good conditionsand the athletes involved were grate-ful to those who came to officiate orcheer. A memorable sight from theSteeplechase evening was ColinSmith sprinting across the infield fromhis position as Starter to officiate atthe water jump. Congratulations toyoung MAWA member Kristy De-vereux who broke the W30 Staterecord in her first Steeplechase.

The Outdoor and Throws Pentath-lons were held on Saturday, March 7.After a cool start the temperature rosesteadily and the Throws competitorsbore the brunt of it with their middaystart. However they must thrive inthese conditions as there were fourState records broken during the after-noon.

It was again a treat to have clubPatron John Gilmour in attendance.John presented the Anne Shaw tro-phy for Athlete of the Meet to LorraineLopes (photo) who attained a stun-

ning age-graded performance of98.82 per cent in the 10,000m. Lor-raine is as fine boned as her beautifulgreyhound Emma and she moves onthe track with a similar grace andspeed.

Most athletes at the Champion-ships are content to achieve a Sea-son Best but all enjoy sharing thedelight of those who break State oreven Australian records and this yearwe were fortunate to again havethose moments. Some 25 Staterecords were re-written and LorraineLopes also has an Australian recordpending. It is icing on the cake whenone of our fellow competitors breaksa long held record. Melissa Foster

provided one such moment when shebroke the great Eileen Hindle’s W35long jump record which was set inJanuary 1988.

Fortunately there were few injuriesacquired during the Championshipsbut when Sylvia Byers succumbed tothe dreadful humidity during the5000m walk Damien Hanson sprintedto her aid from the throwing circle withmany others following. Sylvia showedwhat a trooper she is by taking to thetrack again on Tuesday night andcompleting her event with style andtenacity.

The 46 Nationals entrants fromMAWA used the State Champion-ships to fine tune their preparation. This is especially true of our talentedthrowers who have really upped theante by issuing a friendly challenge tothe other states via Facebook! This isthe epitome of Masters Athletics –fierce competition and plenty of fun.

Many have commented on how wellorganised the Championships wereand this is of course due to the skill ofBarbara Blurton ably assisted by Ri-chard. This is the 12th ChampionshipsBarbara has co-ordinated and shedoes it with aplomb despite the signif-icant pain and debilitation of her inju-ry. A number of other athletes whowere side-lined with injury assistedduring the Championships and wethank them for that. They would nodoubt love to be competing with theirpeers. To all other officials and volun-teers, many thanks for your help andsupport.

Until next year….!
