But if we reflect on the boon that we have inherited as teachers being in touch with the young minds throughout our working lives, we should be grateful to them for keeping us in a state of eternal youth. Children share their values with us

Happy Teachers` Day 2014

Message from the Director, Dr O. Nath Varma

Children are always a great source of happiness for everyone. While teachers grow older every year, our pupils stay the same age and bring to us the freshness of their young minds and thoughts. We grow up to distance ourselves from them every year. But if we reflect on the boon that we have inherited as teachers being in touch with the young minds throughout our working lives, we should be grateful to them for keeping us in a state of eternal youth. On this special day for teachers, we should be thankful to all the children who make the world of teachers such a distinct and special one.

Project DescriptionIn the context of Teachers’ Day, celebrated on the 5th October every year, the Teacher’s Diploma Primary trainee educators have worked on a project comprising of an e-Panorama, 2 iconic structures and 2 posters. The slogan chosen is “Children share their values with us”, which is related to the main theme “What we learn from our students”. The colour scheme chosen is based on spring colours to show innovation. The e-Panorama is a collection of poems, slams, testimonials and short stories that the trainee educators wanted to share, while the two iconic wooden structures which show a 75-cm tall girl and a 100-cm tall boy, are used as a visual representa-tion of our theme, “What we learn from our students”.

My First dayIt was my first day at school. I was terrified. Since I had left school 12 years ago, I had never set foot in a primary school again; there was no reason to. Who wants to go back to primary after attending secondary school? Yet there I was, twelve years after, butterflies in my belly, standing in front of the gate.

I was feeling just the way I had felt when Mum had brought me to school for the first time and this was weird. I was no longer the 5 year-old child who was to begin primary school. I was the trainee about to become the teacher. Still, the feeling of anxiety was the same.

Nevertheless, I knew that I had to overcome it and I did... but not alone.

As I stepped into the school yard, with children rushing past greeting me and smiling at me as my friend introduced me as a new teacher, the anxiety was soon forgotten. The children were actually seeing me as a teacher and it was such a wonderful feeling.

At that moment I learnt something. I learnt as a teacher that children’s warmth and simplicity can change a person. Their innocence and readiness to accept others is something we adults often do not possess but should learn from.

Impish Little things

They relate to me impossible stories,What if the sun did not rise for one day?

What if they could talk to trees?

And I realized it someday,If I have to teach them something,Then I must learn to see the worldThrough the depth of their eyes.

If they want to dance, if they want to sing,Then I must make rhymes out

of my words,And from their wooden chairs

they must rise…

I might teach them how to writeBut they teach me how to laugh and

dream…I might teach them about silence

And a cacophony of sound is all they care to display.

Impish little things they are, right?Half of the time lost in day-dreams

And the other half, learning about Plus, Minus, Verb Tense.

They are simply children of a school-day…
