    smoke emission from tra

    ditional cookstoves is re

    ceiving important atten

    world in recent years. In

    creasing

    National Health Status

    (NHS).

    All

    these

    have

    added to the importance

    of improved technology

    for biomass burning, sug

    gesting a need for bigger

    initiatives from concerned

    organizations to promote,

    develop and disseminate

    cleaner andmore efficient

    cookstovesinNepal.

    National programmes to

    promote biomassenergy

    use and disseminate bio

    massenergy technologies

    have existed in Nepal for

    almost two decades; CRT/

    Nhasbeentirelesslywork

    ingtomaterializethisfact.

    Despite several pro

    grammes on biomass

    energy,

    their

    rate

    of

    dis

    persal is still considered

    slow. CRT/N is trying best

    to overcome numerous

    technical, economic, mar

    keting, institutional and

    social barriers that have

    prevented alterations in

    biomass consumption pat

    terns. Recently the Gov

    ernment of Nepal (GoN)

    has made a commitment

    to make all Nepali homes

    smokefree by 2017 with

    the slogan Clean Cooking

    Solutions to All by 2017

    supported by Nepalese

    pioneer energy stake

    holders.

    CRT/N has a longstanding

    experience working at the

    holds has been strength

    ened for capacity to im

    support livelihood im

    provement.

    Promotion of biomass en

    ergy technology has a

    numberofwinwinoppor

    tunities for the global and

    local communities. CRT/N

    has well understood that

    the development of ICS

need to focus not only on

    saving fuel and reducing

    Indoor air pollution, but

    also on achieving lower

    global warming commit

    ments (GWC). CRT/N ex

    pands its vision to alter

    cooking energy consump

    tionpatterns to focusde

    velopment

    of

    improved

    stoves that save fuel, re

    duce indoor air pollution

    and achieve lower GWC.

    The challenge is that this

    will require bridging the

    cost gap between ad

    vanced stoves in devel

    oped countries and those

    required in developing

    countries; development of

    capabilities for advanced

    stove designs and up gra

    dationoflocalskills.CRT/N

    is working on design and

    development of efficient

    clean cookstoves at its re

    cently upgraded biomass
