PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3 PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

Dear brothers and sisters In today’s Gospel we can learn about the obedience of our Lord’s disciples. In very few words, Saint Mark makes it clear that they didn't hesitate in following the Lord: “they abandoned their nets and followed him”. According to saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Mark indicates their obedience in regard to three things:

- First, in their promptness: Promptness is one of the main characteristics of Christian obedi-ence. As we read in the Scriptures: “Do not postpone from day to day” (Sir 5:7); - Secondly, in disencumbering themselves, because they left behind; here one must not con-sider the amount, but the affection. For one who leaves everything he could have, leaves all things. But what was the need for leaving all things? Saint John Chrysostom explains: “No one can possess riches and come to the kingdom of heaven perfectly; for they are an obstacle to virtue, because they diminish one’s anxiety for eternal things. - Thirdly, in regard to execution, because they followed him. For it is no great thing to leave all things, but perfection consists in following, which is through charity: "If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing" (1 Cor 13:3).

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, let us imitate their obedience. Let us examine our promptness and generosity when the Lord calls, when he calls us to give ourselves to him. When he invites us to leave our dark ways away with faith and determination, when he invites us to follow his command-ments with zeal and perseverance. Sts. Peter and Paul, pray for us. Fr Javier Ibarra, Pastor

Infancy Narratives in the Atrium

Each Advent through early February, catechists and children remember and ponder the Scriptures of the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity of our Lord, Ado-ration of the Magi, and Presentation in the Temple utilizing the beautiful materials as tools for our work with the Trinity as our teacher and guide. We ponder many messages through the Scriptures including:

• God has a plan to bring all people and all of creation into the fullness of life in His Kingdom.

• This plan is unfolded in time and space and involves waiting and preparation.

• God chooses the smallest “vessels” in which to do His Greatest Work.

• Jesus is the light of the world for all. Each year the Level II catechist and children ponder a Synthesis of the Infancy Narratives through a com-mon “Golden Thread.” This year's “Golden thread” is “Light.” Who first knew about this “light”, has it changed, who else learns about this “light”, and who is this “light” intended for?

Take some time this week to read through these Scriptures again and ponder the “light”

within each!

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
