    Sending &Receiving E mailv

    To receive e-mail, you need an account on a mail server.

    v One advantage over regular mail is that you can retrieve your e-mail from any

    location on earth.

    v

    To send e-mail, you need a connection to the Internet andaccess to a mailserver that forwards your mail to its final destination.

    v The standard protocol used for sending Internet e-mail is calledSMTP, short for

    Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.

    v When you send an e-mail message, your computer routes it toan SMTP server.

    The server looks at the e-mail address (similar to the addresson an envelope),

    then forwards it to the recipient's mail server,

    MessageMail accountWeb mail doesn't require any special email client software.Free web mail accounts such as Gmail, Hotmail orYahoouse an email client that appears in a web page. You canaccess your web mail account on any computer withInternet access. Just type in your web mail service's URL andlog in.

    To set up your email client correctly, you need to:

    Determine which web mail service you want to use. Sign up for a free account. (This requires some personal

    information.)

    Determine a user name and password.
