Ancient climate
•Land flora was possible only after the detrimental effect of UV rays was shielded by Ozone layer.
•Photosynthesis was made possible
•Little O2 evolved
•Aquatic algae came into existence

Landmarks in vascular plant Evolution
Formation of polymer lignin isparamount importance in evoloution ofland plants
•Ancient plant Rhynia gwynne-vaughaniiwas a rootless leafless plant with lowstature, with simple and primitivevascular system.
•It has simple reproductive structureslocated at the tips of aerial branches
![Page 4: E-learning module for M.Sc. Botany Course code BOT … · Landmarks in vascular plant Evolution Formation of polymer lignin is paramount importance in evoloution of ... •Development of anchorage and waterconducting system
•Development of water and mineral conductingsystem
•Lignin in xylem provided strength
•Formation of cuticle and prevention ofdessication
•Development aerial structures for gaseousexchange
•Development of specialized photosynthetictissue in aerial leaves
•Sporopollenin formation and spore dessicationwas prevented

Pteridophyte
•Pteridophytes (Gr. pteron= feather, phyton =plant)
•They are the most primitive seedless vascularplants that reproduce by means of spores.
•Hence, they are known as ‘Vascular Cryptogams’.
•Haeckel (1866) called these groups of plants as“Pteridophytes” because of their pinnate orfeather like fronds (leaves).

Amphibians of plant kingdom
•Like reptiles (first true land animals thatevolved after amphibian)
•Pteridophytes are considered as the first trueland plants that evolved after bryophytes.
•Hence pteridophytes are some time called“Botanical Snakes” or “Snakes of plantkingdom.”
•They are also sometime called as “Amphibiansis of plant kingdom” because like bryophytesthey depend on an external source of waterfor fertilization.

Age of Pteridophytes
•Fossil records indicate that they evolvedabout 400 million years back i.e. in theSilurian period of late Paleozoic era. Hencelate Paleozoic can be regarded as “Age ofPteridophytes.”
•Tippo (1942) has placed them inTracheophyta or Tracheata because theseplants first developed vascular tissues (xylemand phloem) where the tracheary elementsappear like human trachea.

What is stele
•Stele is the central core of the stem androot of a vascular plant, consisting ofthe vascular tissue (xylem and phloem)and associated supporting tissue.
•It is with or without pith andsurrounded by endodermis andpericycle
