1992 on the initiative of the the European Parliament to
provide training in European law to legal practitioners.
ERA is a non-profit public foundation, whose patrons
include most EU member states, and which is supported
financially by the European Union.
ERA organises conferences, seminars and language
courses at different levels at its centre in Trier, its office in
Brussels and around Europe. It also provides e-learning
courses and publishes a quarterly journal, ERA Forum.
ERA works with all practitioners of law, whether they
be judges, prosecutors, lawyers in private practice,
notaries, in-house counsel, law enforcement officers or
lawyers in public administration.
ERA’s budget is provided by the European Union, the
German State of Rhineland-Palatinate and participants’
fees, project funding, commissioned events and interest
from the (modest) foundation capital.

About the Academy
Following the ever growing need to develop skills and acquire
knowledge, whilst moving from traditional classroom training
towards a distance learning environment, the Academy
of European Law offers a range of e-learning products to
complement its curriculum of training in EU law for legal
practitioners.
Methodology
ERA offers a range of e-learning courses designed to serve as
preparation for participation in face-to-face training seminars.
The courses are composed of several online modules and an
interactive self-assessment test.
The objective is to offer participants the opportunity to freshen
up their knowledge in advance or to give them a first basic
notion of the subject so that they can draw maximum benefit
from their participation.

ERA offers 5 categories of e-learning modules.
Blended learning courses -
registration for them is bundled with registration for those
courses. They each represent a total of about three hours
learning time, divided into a number of modules.
Seven following introductory courses in different areas of
law are available:
• Cross-Border Civil Litigation
• European Taxation Law
• European Constitutional Law
• European Criminal Justice
• European Competition Law
• European Labour Law
participants to learn more about the fundamentals and
attain a standard level of knowledge. Participants can
then practise and be monitored on their return to work.
Classroom training is dedicated to strengthening
expertise through simulation and role play.
Basic stand-alone e-learning courses
which accompany the summer course programme, ERA
now offers stand-alone e-learning courses for your legal
training.
Our stand-alone e-learning courses will give you an
introduction to an area of law or will be covering specific
topics such as the Preliminary Ruling procedure. The
courses are moderated by legal specialists to help you to
get the most out of your training.
The courses cover an average learning time of 10 hours
and are composed of several online modules and an
interactive self-assessment test.
The most important addition is to increase the
opportunities for users to interact either through quizzes
etc. or in the form of contact with a course moderator.
ERA offers four such upgraded courses:
• Introduction to European Constitutional Law
• Introduction to European Criminal Justice
• Introduction to European Intellectual Property Law
• Introduction to European Labour Law
In the future ERA will extent its e-learning programme to
cover all major fields of European law.

E-lectures
Under the label„e-lectures“ we offer presentations
on the newest developments in EU law and a series of
presentations on case law. Speakers are filmed either live
in the seminar room or separately in a studio. The film
and PowerPoint are presented online in a split-screen,
together with supporting material such as background
documentation. The initial concept is to focus on the
latest case law of the European Court of Justice in
different fields. These lectures can be digested as a video
or as an audio-podcast.
is that a presentation on disability issues in EU public
procurement and state aid law, which was live-streamed
in May 2011 as a one-off in the framework of a
Commission-funded project, attracted 262 viewers.
Made-to-measure e-learning products
ERA has already won one contract to produce a made-
to-measure e-learning course for in-house training in
an EU agency. Thanks to our unique experience and
an unparalleled network of experts we can develop a
e-learning programme that responds exactly to what you
are looking for.
These comprehensive e-learning courses correspond to
the learning time of a traditional face-to-face seminar (av.
10 hours) and provide all the elements needed to replace
such a course. ERA is developping four further full stand-
alone e-learning courses during 2013.

Flexibility Anywhere, anytime, anyone E-learning has the advantage that learners can proceed through a training program „at their own pace and at their own place.“ Training is available when and where it is needed. E-learning can be done at the office, at home, on the road, 24 hours a day, and seven days a week.
Cost and time savings There are no travel costs for bringing employees to a centralized training. E-Learning courses are accessible from any computer anywhere in the world, which keeps delivery costs low.
Effectiveness The pedagogical objective of e-learning is to provi- de learners, an most effective and learner-centred way, with a clear understanding of the various topics. Effective knowledge transfer is achieved by a clear and user-friendly presentation of the materials.
Results Self-evaluation tests and providing additional features to deepen the learning experience. The test is there to allow the participant to verify their understanding of what has been studied and assess how well the participant has internalised the content.
