Living in South Jersey

About South JerseyThe RowanSOM campus is located in Camden County and is part of the greater Philadelphia metropolitan area in the Delaware Valley. The town of Stratford has deep historical roots. Two hundred years ago, like today, the White Horse Pike (Rt.30) was a major highway. Stratford, a day’s ride from Philadelphia, was a popular stage coach stop.

Many South Jersey towns can trace their beginning to colonial times. Camden County’s rich colonial heritage is graphically preserved in historic Haddonfield. Located along King’s Highway, a few miles from RowanSOM, Haddonfield contains many restored per-revolutionary structures. The entire town is a registered historical landmark.

More recently, the construction of numerous highways and bridges has resulted in a population boom. The easy commute to downtown Philadelphia has attracted builders to Camden County and resulted in the sprawling mass of housing developments, strip malls and parking lots that are characteristic of the area today. Fortunately, a large portion of South Jersey is protected from development; the Pinelands, which start in Camden County and stretch into six other counties, contain over one million acres of protected wilderness.

These factors contribute to South Jersey’s unique character. While traveling the main highways, a visitor may think South Jersey is one huge suburb. Turn onto a side road however, and the area gives a rural appearance. Residents of South Jersey have the best of both worlds. They can enjoy the excitement and convenience of living in a major metropolitan area as well as the quiet of the country.

TransportationBy Automobile:The RowanSOM campus is located on Laurel Road, just off of U.S. Rt. 30 (White Horse Pike). Rt. 30 is the main road between Philadelphia (north) and Atlantic City (south), intersecting with the New Jersey Turnpike and Interstate I-295.

By Bus:Bus transportation is provided by New Jersey Transit (NJT). The bus stop on the RowanSOM campus is located at the curb on Laurel Road directly in front of the University Educational Center. For more information, call NJT: 1-973-275-5555, www.njtransit.com.
