Tips and Information...

To Register...

• Use one registration form per person. Form may be duplicated for additional registrants.

• It is highly recommended to register as EARLY as possible. Exam seating is limited and locations fill up quickly.

• An applicant’s seat in an exam location is not guaranteed until full payment is received. Upon receipt of full payment, exam study materials will be sent to registrant.

• Please be advised that study materials are mailed via US Priority Mail - typically taking 1-3 days depending on location. They are not available in electronic format. Mail time (including federal holidays, etc.) must be factored in when registering to allow the applicant ample time to study and prepare to take the exam. PACA cannot guarantee processing of registration or receipt of study materials in time based on late registrations dates.

• Registration will CLOSE three (3) business days prior to the first date of each exam location.

• PACA is not responsible for an exam failure based on lack of study time or preparation.

• Keep a copy of this registration form for your records.

• PACA reserves the right to charge appropriate registration fees based on membership status and/or date of registration receipt.

How to Register...• Complete all sections of the registration form. • Please be sure to include an email address, whether the

applicant’s or a company contact person’s, to receive the registration confirmation.

• Please EMAIL or FAX a copy of the registration form in advance of mailing a check payment to Kallie Kline at [email protected] or 717.234.7030.

• Please allow 5-7 business days to process before contacting the PACA office. If you have not received an email confirmation after 7 business days, please email Kallie Kline.

• As a reminder, study materials will not be mailed until full payment is received. Please make payment in a timely fashion to allow for shipping time and study/prep time by the applicant.

• Registration will CLOSE three (3) business days prior to the first date of each exam location.

• PACA reserves the right to charge appropriate registration fees based on membership status and/or date of registration receipt.

• Cancellation and transfer fees / policies will be strictly enforced.

To Pay By Check...• Please return the

registration form to Kallie Kline at [email protected] or by fax to 717.243.7030 to secure a seat at the desired exam site (based on availability) PRIOR to mailing check.

• Mark the payment option: “Check made payable to PACA enclosed”

Within that link is a “PAY BY CREDIT CARD” button which allows the cardholder to process payment on their own and to receive an email receipt to the address provided.

• PACA accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

To Pay By E-Check...• Follow the same procedures as paying by credit card.• When you click the “PAY BY CREDIT CARD” op-

tion in the emailed invoice link, there is an option to enter your checking account information rather than cc number. This is a secure, ACH debit process and checking account info is never accessible by PACA staff in any way.

Purpose...

About the Certification & Exam

This program has been developed for the purpose of certifying concrete technicians who have demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform the basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete.

This program is intended as a review in preparation for certification testing. It is not for instructional purposes.

Test Procedures...ASTM test procedures covered include:• C1064/C1064M—Temperature of Freshly

Mixed Hydraulic-Cement Concrete• C172/C172M—Sampling Freshly Mixed

Concrete• C143/C143M—Slump of Hydraulic-Cement

Concrete• C138/C138M—Density (Unit Weight),

Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete

• C231/C231M—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method

• C173/C173M—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method

• C31/C31M—Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field

How to Prepare...Be sure to review the entire ACI

workbook and complete all study questions at the end of each chapter.

Our examiners suggest that you read and review each section including the review questions, two (2) to three (3) times before the exam.

Attendees should have a working knowledge of, and experience with, all of the testing methods that will be covered. Practicing these proficiencies prior to performance examination is strongly suggested.

Please note that, while ACI has provided all measurements and calculations in both standard US and metric versions, you need only to study the standard US format.

BONUS!

Included in your exam study materials is a bonus practice test designed by our instructors. Use this practice test for additional review prior to taking the exam. Complete it and bring it with you to your exam site for review.

The written exam may be conducted orally if requested. Please contact Kallie Kline at the PACA office no later than one week prior to your exam date to make the necessary

arrangements.

The one-hour written examination is closed-book and consists of 55 multiple-choice questions. There are between five and ten questions on each of the ASTM test methods and practices. To pass the written examination, BOTH of the following conditions must be met:

• At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and practices; AND• A minimum score of 70% overall.

The performance examination is also “closed book” and requires actual demonstration of six of the required test methods and practices plus a verbal description of Practice C172/C172M (sam-pling). The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform (or describe, where allowed) all of the required steps for each procedure.

Page 7: e k T - Specify Concrete · and Concrete Association On behalf of the American Concrete Institute and the Pennsylvania Aggregates & Concrete Association (PACA), thank you for your

The Role of PACA and our Instructors...Our instructors’ role in the exam procedure is simply to administer and proctor the exam.

PACA’s instructors and the PACA staff DO NOT score the exam, distribute certificates or cards. Once the exams are completed, they are bundled and shipped to American Concrete Institute (ACI) in Michigan for scoring. Ultimately, ACI determines the final pass/fail grade and sends notification directly to the examinee as to whether they passed or failed.

Congratulations, you passed both the written and the performance exams! Now what?

Per the American Concrete Institute (ACI), certification is unique to the individual who participates in, and passes, both the written and performance exam - REGARDLESS OF WHO PAYS FOR THE EXAM - the company or the participant.

The certification number assigned and certification card distributed belong SOLELY to the individual who presents their photo ID, upon their successful passing of both exams. A company or other individual may not claim this certification in any way.

ACI will send the ACI certificate / card DIRECTLY to the examinee based on the address they provided on their exam the day of the test (NOT the registration form completed and returned to the PACA office).

Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations again.

How to I Verify if I Passed and I’m Certified?Visit ACI’s website at http://www.concrete.org/Certification/VerifyACertification.aspx?d=Ask

NOTE: Please allow 2-4 WEEKS from the date of exam to verify certification.

Unfortunately... you failed the written and/or the performance exam. Now what?

ACI allows one (1) year from the original date you took the exam to retake the exam(s). You may retake the exam(s) as many times as needed, as long as you do so within that one (1) year timeframe. Should you fail to retake the exam(s) within that year, you must start all over again with the full written and performance exams required.

PACA offers many locations to retake the exam. Please check our website at http://www.pacaweb.org/Education/Certifications/ACIConcreteFieldTestingTechnician-GradeI.aspx for potential dates/locations. Written retests take place on the first day of the two-day schedule and peformance retests are scheduled at the discretion of the instructor at each location.

What Happens After the Exam ?
