“For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew (proclaim – ASV, LY) the Lord’s death til he come” (1st Corinthians 11:26). Many in the religious world have assembled today to remember and to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. It is good that they have chosen to acknowledge this event because the resurrection is essential to the salvation of every Christian. Paul penned, But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain” (1st Corinthians 15:13-14). Therefore, it is not wrong for a person to set aside a time to thank God for the resurrection of His Son, “One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. (Romans 14:5-6). However, to set aside God’s commanded worship and to replace this worship with human tradition is wrong, “And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradit ion” (Mark 7:9). It is also sinful to bind such a practice on others, “Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations” (Romans 14:1). As Christians, we are to proclaim the death of our Lord until He returns (1st Corinthians 11:26 above). Paul told the Corinthians to partake of the bread and of the cup in remembrance of the Lord’s body and blood, “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Class & Sermon Titles 4/5/2015 Sunday AM Class Ephesians, IntroductionSunday AM Sermon Proclaiming His DeathSunday PM Sermon Partaking of the Lord’s Table” Wednesday PM Class 4/815 1 Corinthians, Chapter 8PREACHER Larry Yarber Home: 417-962-5229 [email protected] ELDERS Jim Groves 417-256-5092 James T. Page 1: e ID 5 COME JOIN US IN OUR CHURCH OF CHRIST WORSHIP! · 2015-06-30 · “Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations” (Romans 14:1). As Christians,

“For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew (proclaim – ASV, LY) the Lord’s death til

he come” (1st Corinthians 11:26).

Many in the religious world have assembled today to remember

and to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. It is good that they have

chosen to acknowledge this event because the resurrection is essential to

the salvation of every Christian. Paul penned, “But if there be no

resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not

risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain” (1st

Corinthians 15:13-14). Therefore, it is not wrong for a person to set aside

a time to thank God for the resurrection of His Son, “One man esteemeth

one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man

be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that

regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. …” (Romans 14:5-6). However, to set aside God’s

commanded worship and to replace this worship with human tradition is wrong, “And he said unto them, Full

well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition” (Mark 7:9). It is also sinful to

bind such a practice on others, “Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations”

(Romans 14:1). As Christians, we are to proclaim the death of our Lord until He returns (1st Corinthians

11:26 – above). Paul told the Corinthians to partake of the bread and of the cup in remembrance of the Lord’s

body and blood, “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus

the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said,

Page 3: e ID 5 COME JOIN US IN OUR CHURCH OF CHRIST WORSHIP! · 2015-06-30 · “Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations” (Romans 14:1). As Christians,

“Proclaiming His Death”…By Larry Yarber

…Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner

also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood: this do ye, as

oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me” (1st Corinthians 11:23-25). We are to remember His death

because it was/is His body and His blood which paid/pays the price for our sins and which has redeemed us

back to God, ”And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s

work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with

corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;

But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot:” (1st Peter

1:17-19). And, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to

sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1st Peter 2:24).

Today, many in the religious world observe this memorial feast on Easter, Christmas, or some

other man made time. Christmas never appears in Holy Writ. Easter only appears once, and then it

is a mistranslation of the Greek word Passover, “And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he

proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) And when he had

apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep

him; intending after Easter (the Passover – ASV, LY) to bring him forth to the people” (Acts

12:3-4). Please note that this passage says nothing about partaking of the Lord’s Supper during

Easter. Rather, we are told to partake of the communion on the first day of every week as did the

early church, “And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came

unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days. And upon the first day of the week,

when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the

morrow; and continued his speech until midnight” (Acts 20:6-7). And, Therefore, brethren, stand

fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle” (2nd

Thessalonians 2:15).

Note again, they partook of this memorial feast days after the Passover (Easter – LY), indicating

that the Lord’s death should be proclaimed weekly, not monthly, at Christmas, Easter, or some

other man made occasion. ~~~

“CRUCIFY HIM” (Mark 15:9-14)

The mob’s bloodthirsty cry “crucify Him” has echoed down the corridors of time as a stark

reminder of the single most important event in human history. Of course, those who cried out

“crucify Him, crucify Him” never meant for his death to bring anything but a complete end to all

that Jesus stood for. Had the rulers of this world realized that their actions would usher in

Christianity, they would never have done it (I Corinthians 2:8). The mindless mob who cried out

“crucify Him”, were in fact, merely a tool used by the rulers to bring about the death of Jesus.

But stop for just a moment. If you had been there, what would you have said? Knowing what

we know now, you and I would most likely have watched in heart wrenching silence. Not wanting

to lend our voices to this terrible event, yet knowing that the cross was necessary for us to have any

hope of eternal life. We would have watched in tears, and in silent agreement to those terrible

words:

“Crucify Him” so that the truth revealed would be verified. 1. The words spoken in the midst of His agony “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken

me?” (Psalms 22:1).

2. His hands and feet pierced (Psalms 22:16).

3. They would gamble for His garments (Psalms 22:18).

4. He would commend His spirit unto God (Psalms 31:5).

5. Not a bone would be broken (Psalms 34:20).

6. He would be betrayed by a friend (Psalms 41:9).

7. Darkness would cover the land (Amos 8:9).

8. They would pierce His side (Zechariah 12:10).

9. Death would not be able to hold Him (Psalms 16:10).

“Crucify Him” because the love of God is being demonstrated

1. The enormity of God’s love (John 3:16).

2. The necessity of God’s love (Romans 5:6).

3. The reality none should miss (Romans 5:8; 10).

a. Sadly the majority will be lost despite the death at Calvary (Matthew 7:13-14;

20:16).

4. The love of God for humanity sent Jesus to the cross (I John 4:9-10).

a. Jesus died for every person (Hebrews 2:9).

“Crucify Him” so we can have the forgiveness of sins 1. Jesus is the Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29; 36).

a. A sacrifice without spot or blemish (I Peter 1:18-19).

b. No bones broken (Numbers 9:12; Psalms 34:20; John 19:36).

c. Jesus is our Passover (I Corinthians 5:7).

2. When Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper, He declared that forgiveness of sins is

inseparably connected to His blood (Matthew 26:28).

3. Baptism is where we contact the blood of Christ:

a. When we are baptized into Christ we are baptized into His death (Romans 6:3-5).

By Jay Yeager

Page 4: e ID 5 COME JOIN US IN OUR CHURCH OF CHRIST WORSHIP! · 2015-06-30 · “Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations” (Romans 14:1). As Christians,

b. To a penitent believer who has confessed Christ, baptism is for the remission of

sins (Acts 2:38; 8:35-39).

c. Our sins are washed by the blood of Christ (Revelation 1:5).

d. Our sins are washed away in baptism (Acts 22:16).

“Crucify Him” that the New Testament might come into force 1. A New Covenant was needed and promised (Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 8:6-13).

a. The Old Testament Law was perfect (Psalms 19:7), but there was no provision for

failure (Hebrews 7:19).

2. The Old Testament had to be fulfilled and removed, Jesus did so on the cross at Calvary

(Ephesians 2:15; Colossians 2:14).

3. The death of Christ would usher in the New Testament (Hebrews 9:16-17).

4. The New Testament would be for all men for all time (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16).

5. A standard of judgment - set and unchangeable (John 12:48; Galatians 1:8-9).

“Crucify Him” that the church may be purchased. 1. The church is an institution that had to be purchased– the blood of Jesus Christ, the price

paid (Acts 20:28).

a. Jesus loves the church that He gave himself for (Ephesians 5:25).

2. Reconciliation unto God is in the church (Ephesians 2:16).

3. Jesus is going to save the church (Ephesians 5:23).

a. The saved are added to the church (Acts 2:47).

4. Jesus is the head of the church (Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:18).

5. “Crucify Him”- a terrible price for our salvation. Then we may have stood in heartbreaking silence, but

not today. Today we speak joyously; a Savior came and died for the benefit of every soul. We preach Christ

crucified (I Corinthians 1:23; 2:2), the just for the unjust that He might bring us to God (I Peter 3:18). Thanks

be unto God for His unspeakable gift (II Corinthians 9:15).

YOU WILL BE LOST BUT NOT ALONE

The freedom of choice does not cease when one becomes a child of God.

There is a road full of pain and remorse that leads away from God and the

blessings in Christ (Ephesians 1:3), and it is as accessible as the road that leads

to Him (Luke 8:11-15). This appeal is directed toward those who have or are

near to walking that path, a plea to consider the seriousness of that course.

The very nature of this matter necessitates being very candid, but please do not equate candidness

as being uncaring or harsh. I assure you such is not the case. Despite the common misconception,

which suggests that love is only connected with positive statements and tolerating attitudes, the

person who is genuinely concerned for lost souls will never withhold the truth necessary to save a

soul from death regardless of how much that truth may temporarily discomfort the hearer (Hebrews

12:5-11). Ephesians 4:15 makes clear that the truth must be preached, just as it makes clear that it

must be preached in love.

1. The fallen away are lost. It has been my observation that those who fall away rarely want to

acknowledge the consequences of their actions. Instead, justification is sought by claiming that they

can still have a relationship with God outside of the Lord’s church. I am certain (at least at the

beginning) that those who have studied the scriptures seek this refuge more out of desperation than

conviction. Now, please understand! I am not suggesting that those who fall away cannot reach a

point that they are convinced of this illusion, if for no other reason than to avoid thinking of the

alternative. I am saying that initially it may be a means of escaping the harsh reality of what they

have done. Beloved, if this describes you and the line of reasoning you have adopted, may I remind you that the word

of God does not lend an ounce of support for such thinking. Jesus purchased the church of Christ with His

own precious blood (Acts 20:28), He is its head and Saviour (Ephesians 1:22; 5:23), every saved person is

added to the church (Acts 2:47) which is the body of Christ (Colossians 1:18), and is expected to function as

a part of that body (Ephesians 4:15-16). That is according to the eternal purpose of God (Ephesians 3:9-11),

executed by Jesus Christ (Matthew 16:18; John 6:38; 17:4) and revealed through the Holy Spirit (John

14:26; 16:13; I Corinthians 2:10-13).

Now, in light of that, what happens when a person forsakes the Lord’s church? He rejects God’s plan, the

Savior’s blood and the Spirit’s message. Un-repented of, the fallen away will lose their soul, and all the

excuses in the world will not alter that fact “For if after they have escaped the pollutions of this world

through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are entangled therein, and overcome, the

latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the

way if righteousness, than, after they had known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto

them” (II Peter 2:20-21).

2. You will not go alone. Another common argument offered by those who have forsaken the

Lord’s church is: “It’s my business what I do, nobody else is going to be hurt but me”. Brethren,

not only is that statement incorrect, it is irresponsible as well. Whole families can and are lost due

to indifferent parent(s). Parents are responsible for the influence they exert over their children. They

are to train them up in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4).

Parents, let me ask this question. If you refuse to make God first in your life (Matthew 6:33) and

your children follow in your footsteps, could you look at them on the judgment day and claim you

are innocent of the everlasting punishment that awaits them? I think you know the answer to that

question – you could not!

Each of us will choose whom we will serve (Joshua 24:15; Romans 6:16). If we choose to serve

God, we will be blessed in time and eternity by Him with whom we have to do (Hebrews 4:13). On

the other hand, if choose to serve the god of this world (II Corinthians 4:4), we will certainly be lost

for eternity. In either event, whether we like it or not, we will not go alone!

A good book is a great treasure to those who desire to broaden their knowledge of the un-known. It

is a fountain from which to draw to those who thirst for knowledge as well as a foundation for

wisdom. It is a whetstone to resharpen the memory when time seems to have turned the edge of the

mind. It is a memory bank of information into which we may tap again and again for further under-

standing. It represents years of study and re-search by its author that can prove invaluable to the

hungry mind that desires deeper in-sight to important facts. The apostle Paul must have had a keen

sense of the value of books when he instructed Timothy to “bring the books, but especially the

parchment” when Paul was a prisoner (II Timothy 4:13). But regardless of the value

and importance of any book written by the most brilliant author on this earth, let none be-

come a substitute for the Book of books, the source of all spiritual wisdom, the fountain of

surpassing knowledge, the ultimate of all spiritual truth, the Bible, THE WORD OF GOD!
