P&C Working Bee Thank you to our small but enthusiastic group of parents, boys and teacher, Sylvia Lane, for their attendance at the P&C Working Bee last weekend. The school grounds are looking very impressive, as many of our visitors to the school frequently comment on.

NAPLAN Year 7 and Year 9 are to be congratulated on their exemplary conduct during the NAPLAN testing that has occurred during the last two weeks. This week we are engaging in a detailed debrief of the process with both staff and students. We will then submit our feedback to NAPLAN Online regard-ing the test process, which mainly went smoothly. Issues that were identified in the Numeracy Sec-tion have been reported and these will be dealt with to ensure that no student at Epping Boys High School is disadvantaged in any way.

Thanks to all involved, especially Head Teacher Middle School, Mrs Jay-marie Blue for her organisa-tion and Mr Steve Botto and the IT staff for their impressive technical support.

HSC Minimum Standards Tests A number of our Year 10 boys have sat the National HSC Minimum Standards test; a test designed to demonstrate their literacy and numeracy skills. These students have been supported by the Head Teacher Senior School, Mr Luke Symonds and Mrs Jodie McCabe and Mr Seddique Martin in the Mathematics Faculty. All boys who have attempted these tests have been successful in demon-strating that they have met the minimum standard expected.

We congratulate these boys on their patience with the process and also their achievement.

World’s Greatest Shave Earlier this year our school participated in the World’s Greatest Shave. This was a significant fund-raising event at our school. We received a formal letter last week from the Campaign Coordinator for NSW/ACT informing us that Epping Boys High School will qualify as one of the top fundraisers this year. Congratulations to all involved.

Athletics Carnival The athletics carnival, last Monday, was a great day out for the boys and an arena for a different set of boys to excel. It was pleasing to see so many boys actively participating in the variety of events on the day. The Inclusive Education boys ran their races and had a go at the high jump. Many boys from all year groups participated in both track and field. Several boys were trying to improve on their own personal best times.

Year 12 ran a very successful cake stall and Mario and Luigi even made a guest appearance for the event. The weather was terrific and the organisation by Mr Stephen Kayes was great, resulting in an enjoyable day for all who attended.

Uniform Now that the weather is becoming cooler, the boys should be well into wearing their full winter uniform. Many of the boys look great in their uniforms, however, there are still a few who are wearing hoodies under their jackets and then removing their jackets instead of the hoodie. I appreciate the need to wear layers of clothing at the moment, however, no hoodies should be seen at school.

On the topic of uniform, a number of Year 12 boys who have chosen to do study instead of sport, have asked if they are able to wear their usual school uniform on a Wednesday. This is, of course, perfectly fine.

NESA National Minimum Standards The Term 2 NESA test window for Minimum Standards is currently open and we are trying to help as many boys as possible to complete the testing. Mr Symonds is working with a number of our Year 10 boys to complete their testing at this time, however, there is another opportunity in November, should any boy not complete it this term.

Thus far we have been very successful with all boys who have sat the tests meeting Minimum Standards.

Deputy Principal Middle School (Relieving) - Seddique Martin

NAPLAN A sigh of relief as NAPLAN draws to a close. As one of the first schools to do NAPLAN as an online assessment, we will be collecting information from Year 7 and Year 9 boys who may have had difficulty with the online process and/software in Week 4.

BTM Aspect Education will be visiting the school on 7 June to do a session about Autism Spectrum Disorder with the Year 7 cohort. This is part of the BTM program and is aimed at being an informative session to help boys better understand students in the Inclusive Education Unit and be more empathetic to the challenges these boys face every day.

MathsOnline All boys have access to ‘MathsOnline’ with their access names and passwords from last year. This is an interactive online program to assist boys with their learning, and gives all boys access to the curriculum for past, current and future years.

Half Yearly Assessments Half yearly assessments will soon be upon us. Planning and preparation is of the utmost importance to reduce stress and anxiety amongst our growing young men. Good luck to all boys as they navigate through this tough term.

Tricky Kids ‘Nearly all kids will present parenting challenges during their childhood but some kids are, depending on your preferred description, tricky, challenging or hard-to-handle throughout their childhood.

Stop Whatever you are Currently Doing. Step Back and Observe. Importantly, don’t just watch your child’s misbehaviour but focus on what happens when they are having “non-problem times”. This is also part of refocusing on your child as a person who is not defined solely by their problem behaviour.

In Tricky Kids, (Finch Publishing), author Andrew Fuller, draws on 25 years’ experience as a clinical psychologist and family therapist, to advise parents on how to deal with these children.’

Prefect’s FIFA Night

SAVE THE DATE

NAPLAN - Jay-marie Blue - Head Teacher Middle School This year sees the first cohort of Year 7 and Year 9 boys at Epping Boys High School transitioning from pencil and paper tests to NAPLAN Online. From this year, teachers will start to get a more detailed assessment of individual student ability through tailored testing, and the faster turnaround of NAPLAN results will allow them to adapt their lessons to the needs of the classroom far earlier in the school year.

As you are aware, the transition approach determined by the NSW Minister for Education allows for around 500 NSW schools from all education sectors to move to NAPLAN Online this year, with all schools to follow by 2020.

The accessibility adjustments provided in NAPLAN Online for students with disability are equivalent to what is currently provided in pencil and paper NAPLAN tests in most instances.

We would like to thank the diligence of staff as Test Administrators and the 2018 Year 7 and Year 9 cohort of boys for a very successful transition to Online NAPLAN.

On Saturday 16 June the Prefect body will be hosting a FIFA World Cup viewing in the school hall for

the Australia vs France fixture.

We invite EBHS students to come and enjoy a night of football and watch the game with their friends.

The game starts at 8:00pm and doors will open at 6:30pm for the boys to get comfortable, enjoy a

snack and have a round of FIFA against their mates.

The event is expected to finish at 10:00pm depending on extra time.

Parents can collect their sons from the school hall at the conclusion of the event.

Please note that is event is for EBHS students only.

P & C Autumn Working Bee – Sunday 20 May We had lovely weather for the Working Bee but unfortunately not enough helpers. Thank you to the 21 who came and planted, pruned and moved a ton of mulch – a great effort. Please consider helping at the September event. It is fun and our boys do bene-fit from lovely grounds. Special thanks to Ms Lane and Ms Schadel and her delightful and helpful daughters for assisting on the day.

World Environment Day – 5 June To recognise World Environment Day we are asking the boys to wear green and bring their lunch and snacks using no-single-use plastic. We are also re-launching LEAF (Leading Environment Action Force) Club for the boys on every alternate Tuesday (Week B) which will be led by Ms Lane. At our first meeting we have Jimmy Stanton-Cooke talking about ‘Bees for Trees’ project. The club will be interactive and also have activities, such as making your own no-sew bags.

Daylight Uniform Shop – no plastic bags from 1 July EBHS Daylight shop has come on board with reducing plastic and will now use paper bags for dispensing clothes in the shop. Well done and thank you, Daylight. Please thank Delma when you next visit the shop or order by phone. This does mean the boys will need to be careful with taking white shirts home if they need to return them.

2019 Epping Arts Fair – be part of the team We are starting to plan for the 2019 Epping Arts Fair and are looking for volunteer parents to join with parents, teachers and Ro-tarians to make the fair a success. 2019 Epping Arts Fair will be the last event for a few of us as our boys will be finishing next year and it would be terrific to hand the event over to Year 7 or 8 parents. It is fun and rewarding to be part of the team. Please call me if you are interested or have any questions.

Our meetings for 2018 will be held on the first (occasionally 2nd) Monday during term time at 7:30 pm.

For 2018 the Meeting dates are Term 2: 4 June, 2 July. Term 3: 6 August, 3 September. Term 4: 12 November, 10 December.

All parents and carers are welcome. Meetings are held in the Common Room in B Block.

Northern Sydney Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) 19 – 20 May 2018

This year, the Northern Sydney Model United Nations Assembly was hosted by Epping Rotary. Forty-two delegations from 28 public and private schools, all across the Northern Sydney region, assembled in our hall at Epping Boys High School to conduct diplomatic relations and debate six draft resolutions.

This year, Epping sent two delegations: Canada was represented by Aditya A, Daniel B and Liam D (all from Year 11), and Kenya was represented by Sebastien B (Year 10), Callum H and Dave P (both Year 11). Each of our delegations conducted themselves well in each debate with very persuasive arguments. They proposed amendments to some of the draft resolutions and even won a procedural motion on the floor of the Assembly.

In addition to our delegations, several boys gave their time to assist the Rotary volunteers in the running of the Assembly. Hassan R (Year 10) and Luis D (Year 11) provided assistance by helping to count votes and carrying diplomatic messages between the different delegations, as well as assisting with moving furniture and equipment. Felix D, Lachlan F and Ryan V (all Year 12, repre-sented Epping at MUNA last year in the Israel and Ukraine delegations) not only assisted with these tasks, but also helped to mentor this year’s delegates from Epping.

This year’s Assembly was won by Cuba who will go on to represent Northern Sydney at the National Model UN at Old Parliament House in Canberra.

Epping’s delegates and volunteers wish to thank the following people for making our participation possible: Mr Bruce Jacob and the Epping Rotary Club for convening MUNA and sponsoring both of our delegations, the Rotary Club members for their efforts in running the weekend, and Mrs Nadine Koff and Dilan M (Year 11) for giving up their weekend to run the catering for the event.

Students in Year 10 this year who are interested in participating in Model UN, please see Mr de la Pena in the Science Staffroom. There is an opportunity in August this year for a Model UN assembly for local high schools.

Northern Sydney Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) cont. NORTHERN SYDNEY MUNA A GREAT SUCCESS

MUNA 2018 was a huge success. It had a record number of 44 teams register from 29 private and public schools, and a record number of 27 sponsoring Rotary Clubs who sponsored 38 teams. The 126 students who participated were outstanding and one of the MUNA themes of the weekend of “Building Future Leaders " was emphatically displayed. Their behaviour, attitude, debating skills and spontaneous gratitude and thanks ,were outstanding and quite moving. The Parade of Nations on Sunday morning was a highlight with the Best Dressed Award going to Mackellar Girls representing Venezuela.

Third overall was Shore, second was Ascham and the winning team was PLC Pymble. PLC will proceed to Canberra in August to contest National MUNA.

Our distinguished Secretary General was David Ellyard with the two adjudicators being Rob Mitchell and Monica Saville.

Epping Boys High School deserves huge praise. They provided an outstanding venue free of charge and through their hospitality centre catered for over 150 students, staff and volunteers for the two days. Special thanks to Nadine Koff who was magnificent with the catering.

Epping Boys High School represented Canada and Kenya, and I was fortunate enough to be invited to a school assembly to present awards to the six students who represented their school so well and so proudly. Thanks to teacher, Michael de la Pena, who attended the whole weekend. He was a great help and also arranged students to be volunteers from Epping Boys High School.

We had over 40 volunteers for the weekend from Balgowlah Rotary, St. Ives Rotary, Glen Haven Rotary and especially Epping Rotary Club where over 25 members and family helped. Volunteers were also from Epping Boys High and Macquarie Rotaract.

Rotary District Photographer, Bill Forthye, was there both days including 6 hours on Saturday. A lasting image of the weekend will be of Bill climbing up a ladder on the roof to get shots of all 126 students following the Parade of Nations.

We were fortunate to have our Federal MP, John Alexander, and State MP, Damien Tudehope, open the event on Saturday morn-ing. Damien was gracious enough to return on Sunday and be one of the judges for The Best Dressed Award, as were Damien Azzapardi and Carla Rank from Rotaract. This clearly illustrated the second theme of the weekend which was " Building Partner-ships".

I would like to thank the MUNA Committee who worked tirelessly for over 6 months to make MUNA 2018 the great success that it was. Gavin Ralston, Nick Pride, Phil Wishart, Janet Stacey, Peter Garrard, Alan Cunningham and Deretta Andrews were outstand-ing. However, special mention must be made of Toula Serna who was amazing. Without Toula, this event would not have been the success that it was. Thanks, Toula.

It was a privilege to work with such great supporters of youth and to witness the talents and quality of our future leaders.

NSW Secondary Schoolboys Challenge Cup - Table Tennis - Tony Nelson

On Monday 14 May a group of talented, enthusiastic and determined, young men represented Epping at the NSW Secondary Schoolboys Challenge Cup. This was a Table Tennis tournament open to all schools in NSW.

Each pairing played a number of matches within their pools against different schools in the hopes of qualifying into the top 16 for the knockout stages in the afternoon. All our teams played out of their skins, with some fantastic performances and great all round sportsmanship.

3 of our 5 teams qualified for the knockout stages, with the remaining boys playing in singles repechage rounds. One of our junior teams made the final and were successful in taking out the junior division! Congratulations to Joe and Austin for this outstanding effort!
