• NEW SERIES WILL BE “WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?” by Sinclair Ferguson • Continues SUNDAYS, 10:15 am, Room E210Have you wondered who the Holy Spirit is? Here is an opportunity to know more about this person of the Trinity. “Although the Holy Spirit is sometimes the forgotten Person of the Trinity, His presence and work is found throughout redemptive history. In this twelve-message series, Dr. Sinclair Ferguson traces the work of the third person of the Trinity through Scripture - from creation to the work of Christ to His dwelling in our hearts today. Along the way, he sheds light on the vital role the Holy Spirit serves. Dr. Ferguson’s goal is to help us know the Holy Spirit as a person, in ad-dition to knowing of His power and work within us.” Please prayerfully consider joining in this class to understand the power and action of this wonderful Person. This class is led by various individuals.

Local MissionLOCAL MISSION SERVICE OPPORTUNITYFremont’s local mission team partners with agencies that stress the importance of giving a hand up to the homeless and hurting. Each mission partner needs an advocate to speak for it. Right now we have an open-ing for an advocate for Cottage Housing. Advocates stay in contact with the mission partner and attend monthly local mission team meetings to keep us up-to-date on partners’ needs and progress. We would welcome you to our team. Please take time to read about and pray for Cottage Housing. You can contact Marcia Garrison at 383-7118 or [email protected] if you have questions or want to volunteer.

Cottage Housing formed in 1994 to provide housing for individuals and families in need. Residents must submit to sobriety, establish personal development goals and be active community participants. In ex-

change they are provided with transitional housing in Quinn Cottages for individu-als or Serna Village for fami-lies for up to 24 months. For more information see their website, cottagehousing.org.

WICKER BASKET COLLECTIONS Summer is here and many of you will be traveling. As you travel, please remember the needy in Sac-ramento and save the travel size toiletries found in your hotel. Those little shampoos, soaps and lotions mean a great deal to the homeless. Please collect them and drop them in the wicker baskets in the Narthex and CLC Atrium when you return to church. There’s also a big need for toothbrushes, tooth-paste, combs, brushes, Chapstick and deodorant. All of these items can go in the wicker baskets and someone from the Local Mission team will deliver them to our mission partners for distribution.

USED PRINTER INK CARTRIDGES & OLD CELL PHONESYou can also help our local mission partners by do-nating your used printer ink cartridges. They turn these in for credit toward stationery items. Family Promise also collects old cell phones. Please leave them in the office.

Maryhouse Tea • Friday, June 26 • 10:00 - 11:30 am

This is an outreach to the homeless women who are served by Maryhouse on Friday, June 26 from 10 to 11:30 am. This is sponsored by Fremont Local Mission but we invite any interested Fremont women to participate and help with this event. We will be serv-ing tea and sandwiches on the Maryhouse patio at 1321 North C Street in downtown Sacramento. We need people to help prepare food, serve, share love, and possibly lead them to Christ. This is a way to share the love of Christ with women struggling with homelessness. If you would like to help with donations or serving that day please contact Linda Marsh at 916-798-2603 or [email protected].

8 THE GRAPEVINE

Hello, let me introduce myself. My name is Dan Lee. You may have seen me in the Sanctuary Choir. You may also have seen me doing Deacon duties. As of this year, I am the new “Admiral” of the Fremont Mariners.

“Who are the Mariners?” many of you may be asking. You know the people sitting behind donut tables in between services in the courtyard or

Message from the Admiral

in Ferguson? That’s us. You know the people standing between services carrying a sign and a big can collecting donations for the needy? That’s us. You know that big tower in front of the sanctuary? That’s not us, but it’s there because of us. You see, we’re about more than donuts.

Mariners is the organization within Fremont that does a whole lot of service projects behind the scenes to maintain the upkeep of our church. A whole lot. We also do a lot of projects for the community in the name of Jesus. A whole lot. In between, we get together and fellowship and enjoy each other’s company.

And I am their new leader.

While I am Admiral, I intend to post monthly Grapevine arti-cles about what the Mariners have done, are doing, and plan on doing. I am proud of our accomplishments and want to let the congregation know of them and to invite everyone of join us.

So, here is my first report: On May 2, we had our 68th banquet, this one catered by Evan’s Kitchen (who also catered Don Baird’s retirement dinner). The food was fabulous. The featured speak-er was from a Christian organization called Bridget’s Dream, which does heroic work rescuing local girls from the human trafficking that is rampant in Sacramento. Until I heard his pre-sentation, I never knew how much of this evil is prevalent right here in our state capital. For bringing awareness of this problem to us, we provided Bridget’s Dream with an honorarium. Big thanks to Elder Claude Vanderwold for arranging the speaker. After the banquet, I found out that one of our Mariners “ships,” the Mainsails, donated their own gift of $500 to this worthy cause. Big kudos to the Mainsails! And a big thanks to Don Davi-son for organizing the banquet.

Speaking of the Mainsails, by the time this article goes to print, they will have gone and returned from a cruise to Alaska. I’m quite envious as I’ve always wanted to see Alaska. Pictures! I want pictures!

If you want to know more about our fantastic Mariners organi-zation, email me at [email protected]. Or you can try catch-ing me after the first service. I’m one of the blue robe people.

In His service,Dan Lee Mariners

9FREMONT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Prayer Ministry

The single most important reason to pray: God says that we should pray:

“Devote yourselves to prayer….” Col. 4:2“Be….faithful in prayer.” Rom. 12:12“….pray continually…” Thess. 5:17 Biblical evidence that God bends down and listens to your prayers is 2 Kings 20:1-5. The Lord told Hezekiah he was going to die. “Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord……And Hezekiah wept bit-terly.” God replied, “I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you.”

Read Deuteronomy 9, especially verses 19-20, and witness how the King of Glory listened to Moses and spared lives twice.

In 1 Kings, Elijah asked God to restore a boy’s life. That’s exactly what happened.

In 1 Samuel, Hannah prayed for a son, and God blessed her with Samuel, who later said, “far be it from me to sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you.”

Maybe the greatest effect of prayer is that prayer changes us. In our prayers, we make God the focal point of our life, so we change from being self-centered to being God-centered.

To trust God is to put all our weight on Him. When we don’t understand, when we hurt, when we suffer disappointment, when we are on the other side of asking, then trusting God is finally just collapsing in exhaustion upon the cross, upon JESUS. “I have often wished that I was a more decent man. Nevertheless, amid the greatest difficulties of my ad-ministration, when I could not see any other resort, I would place my whole reliance upon God.”

--Abraham LincolnLetter to Baltimore Presbyterian Synod, 1863.

WHY PRAY AT ALL: DOES IT REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

STEPHEN MINISTRY is a spiritual care ministry that helps people hear and believe that God loves them. A new member training course is scheduled to start in September. If you have an interest in helping a person to receive God’s care, consider this opportunity. This class consists of 50 hours of training spread over several months. Contact Patty Howard, 383-5659 or Don Davison, 457-7733.

Most of our weekly Bible studies take a break over the summer and will start up again in early Sept. Email Melissa at [email protected] for more info.

These notes are not intended to reflect the total work of the Session at the meeting. If you are interested in more information about a particular item, please contact any member of Session.

Dr. Burke challenged the Session to persevere in our love of the King and Kingdom and move at Gods pace and measure what God measures.

Dr. Burke also encouraged the Session to identify times in the day where they can listen to God and pause at regular times each day for spiritual direction.

Sanctuary FlowersHonor the memory of a loved one with flowers in the Sanc-tuary on a Sunday morning. Remember someone special on a birthday or anniversary with flowers of celebration. Call Barbara Kennedy at 489-5665 to schedule a Sunday.

FREMONT FAMILY CONNECTION MINISTRYA “Connector” shows our members that they are cared for by praying for them, as well as calling, writing or visiting them. It is our goal to have all of our church family contacted by a Connector at least four times a year.

If you are a Connector, please save the date of Thursday, August 27 at 6:00 in the Geneva Room for our annual dinner meeting. If you are not a Connec-tor and are interested in finding out more information and joining this very important ministry, please contact Mike and Joanne Butler (call 451-6866), Lana Elhardt, Julie Morris, Ann Davison, Char Gezi or Pastor Dan Willson.
