As OHD revises this program there will be select opportunities to be part of the pilot phase for the program. OHD runs pilot workshops of developing programs to gather feedback from our participants about the learning objectives, content, and activities. Since 1993 the University of Waterloo has offered the Leadership for Results program (in various forms) to introduce staff to some of the basic leadership and supervisory skills needed in the workplace. After a lengthy run, OHD is in the process of reinvigorating the program by taking a look at the five core modules and enhancing the workshops to be more current and focused. For the Fall 2012 term, Organizational & Human Development will be offering a “Bookshop” on Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die by Dan and Chip Heath, authors of Switch. The Bookshop series is a blended program offering components of a book club and workshop. Here’s how it will work:

• Participants meet 3 times during the Fall term (9-12pm on Sept. 25th, Nov. 6th and Dec. 11th). You must attend all three sessions.

• You receive a personal copy of the book (yours to keep) at the first meeting along with guided questions

• Participants READ the book on their own time (really – this is important.) • We meet two additional times to discuss content and share how ideas

can be applied • This book is for anyone who has a concept or idea and seeks to

understand how you can design your communication so that it is “sticky” --- understandable, memorable and effective in changing thought and behaviour.

• This book does not promise miracles yet with some focused effort to follow their six principles (Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional and Storytelling) that may be enough to make a difference.

OHD is inviting proposals for the Sixth Annual Waterloo Staff Conference for workshop sessions taking place on April 9 & 10, 2013. Proposals should be for an educational and interactive session(s) focused on professional and/or personal development that will include discussion, activities, and engagement on a specific topic. These may be single presenter sessions or team-led.

All proposals should include:

1. Your name(s), department(s), and contact information for the presenter(s) / those involved in the session. In each instance, the person who submits the proposal will be the key contact.

2. Session title. 3. Session description (not to exceed 200 words, please) outlining the objectives, material, and design

for the session. The description should discuss the learning outcomes participants will gain by attending your session. For interactive sessions please also include a description of methods of presentation (e.g., group activity, discussion, level of interactivity, etc.). List any references you deem relevant (these may be in addition to the 200 word limit mentioned above). Your description will appear in the conference program and on the conference website.

4. All audio-visual requirements.

Submission of Proposals

• Please email your proposal as an attachment to Mark Lisetto-Smith ([email protected]). • All attachments should be .doc, .docx, or .rtf format, or pdf. • Name your file by your last name and the session title e.g., Lisetto-Smith_Utilizing-Social-Networking-

For-Work.doc • Give your email the subject heading: "Call for Proposals: 2013 Staff Conference".

The deadline for submissions of proposal abstracts is October 22, 2012.

All proposals will be subject to a review process by the OHD office. You will receive reviewers' feedback by December 3, 2012 and will be invited to consider this feedback before submitting the final version of your session description before February 11, 2013. Amendments not received by this date will regrettably not be included in the 2013 conference. The final session information must be available on the website when registration launches on March 11th, 2013.

Staff Conference 2013 Workshop - FYI:

OHD will provide assistance leading up to the event, which is facilitated through an initial meeting(s), follow-up discussions, and through a 1 hour training session on the location/rooms, and technology. Our team works closely with you to ensure your session runs as smoothly as possible.

Workshop facilitators should be prepared to run their workshop twice; however, you may be asked to run it once, twice, or even three times depending on demand/type.

Size limitations vary depending on room. Typically the room sizes are 40, 70, and 175, and rooms are designated by the topic of a workshop. OHD will monitor enrolment and may move your room accordingly, and we'll keep you apprised of any and all changes, of course.

Most workshop presenters source their own materials (if they are needed) and develop their own materials. OHD provides printing of handouts (if sent to us by the cut-off date) and assists with operations of your workshop on the days of the conference through a room host.

Questions about your proposals should be directed to Mark Lisetto-Smith of OHD, ext. 38257 or to [email protected].
