Page 1 Users’ Guide Jigabot 5 is a precision robotic & optical device intended to be used by professionals. These devices are novel and unique instruments; all users should first learn how they are intended to be used, and then honor principles of operation. Also, caution should always be used so as not to pinch fingers or hands or other objects in the Jigabot 5 cradle. Jigabot 5 uses IR Tracking technology. IR Tracking is an optical technology, which works best in controlled lighting environments such as is more generally found indoors. Outdoor environments generally work at closer ranges, provided that (1) the emitter is attached to the subject; and (2) the clothing worn by the subject is not highly reflective in the IR light spectrum. Always test your implementation within your track- ing environment before live tracking. A properly controlled lighting environment will tend to have few, if any, competing IR light sources. If too much IR light reflects off of your subject, a Jigabot Emitter (which is emitting an IR light signal) may be washed out (blown out) and hence not sensed or tracked. Jigabot 5 is designed to follow an IR signal generated by an IR Emitter. For proper tracking to occur, a direct line of sight to a visible IR Emitter is necessary. Intended Activities Jigabot 5 is designed for subject-tracking movements such as these: Left & right, up & down, indoors. The Emitter type that you use will largely determine whether other kinds of activities can be properly tracked. IR Emitters & Power packs are not designed to track subjects who, while moving, are simultaneously spinning (like dancers). Users’ Guide

Jigabot 5 is a precision robotic & optical device intended to be used by professionals. These devices are novel and unique instruments; all users should first learn how they are intended to be used, and then honor principles of operation. Also, caution should always be used so as not to pinch fingers or hands or other objects in the Jigabot 5 cradle.

Jigabot 5 uses IR Tracking technology. IR Tracking is an optical technology, which works best in controlled lighting environments such as is more generally found indoors. Make sure not to put fingers or hands between the Cradle and Enclosure, be-cause they could be pinched or crushed.

Steps for Tripod Mounting:

1. Always mount the Jigabot 5 to the tripod before mounting the camera onto the Jigabot 5.

2. The tripod should be a sturdy but simple tripod, with NO camera head, as the Jigabot 5 will become the camera head.

8. Gently screw the Jigabot 5 onto the mounting screw (note: the entire Jigabot 5 will turn). DO NOT APPLY MUCH TORQUE OR ELSE YOU CAN DAMAGE THE GEARS.

9. Once the Jigabot 5 is gently but fully threaded onto the mounting screw, use a 28mm wrench on the Mounting Shaft to torque or tighten the Jigabot 5 onto the tripod. NOTE: this connection should be firm enough to disallow the Mounting Shaft from rotating independently of the tripod during tracking operation.

3. Use a tripod with a 3/8”-16 Mounting Screw (or alternatively one with a 1/4”-20 size Mounting Screw along with the adapter included with the Jigabot 5.)

4. Make sure that the Mounting Screw is less than 1/2” in length (less than 12.5mm in length) because the threaded hole of the Tripod Mounting Shaft on the Jigabot 5 is 1/2” long.

5. Place the tripod on a sturdy surface. MAKE SURE THAT THE TRIPOD IS LEVEL.

6. With help from another person, hold the Jigabot 5 above the tripod so that the Tripod Mounting Shaft can be rotated around the tripod’s Mounting Screw.

7. Gently rest the Jigabot 5’s shaft on the tripod Mounting Screw.

TRIPOD MOUNTING (moun-ting), noun: the act of attaching the Jigabot 5 on top of a tripod or similar mounting device.

Never torque the Jigabot 5 onto the tripod by twisting it by hand. Rather, use a 28mm wrench to tighten the Shaft onto the tripod.

Be certain that the tri-pod is level, so that the Jigabot de-vice rotates level with the ground.

Steps for Camera Mounting:

1. After the Jigabot 5 is mounted to a tripod, insure that the cradle is level.

2. Place a camera on top of the Jigabot 5 cradle. (Steady the camera so that it does not fall before screwing it into the cradle for support.) NOTE: the maximum weight of the camera & lens combined is 10 pounds. This amount may be exceeded (and cause tracking issues) if the camera is not balanced on the cradle.

3. Position the camera as close as possible to the Enclo-sure (vertical).

4. Position the camera Forward or Backward on the cradle until its weight (including the lens) is centered on the Tilt Shaft. NOTE: if the weight is not balanced, the Jigabot 5 will not be able to more the camera freely and smoothly.

5. Once the camera is centered so as to distribute its weight evenly around the Tilt Shaft, put a 1/4-20” camera mounting screw (included) thru a hole from the bottom of the Cradle. Mate the screw with the Camera’s 1/4-20” threaded mounting hole. NOTE: you may need to move the camera slightly to the nearest Cradle hole.

6. From the bottom, screw the 1/4-20” screw tightly using the Screw Ring.

CAMERA MOUNTING (moun-ting), noun: the act of properly attaching a camera to the Jigabot 5 cradle.

Insure that the camera’s weight is centered on the cradle (and include the lens in your assessments).

Make sure that the Cradle is level before placing a camera on top of it.

PLACEMENT (pleys-muh nt), noun: The position of a Jigabot or the placing of a Jigabot such that it can track an IR Emitter and subject. A Jiga-bot must be placed within an Emitter’s Coverage to be ale to track the Emitter.

Steps for Jigabot Placement:

1. Identify the area within which the track-ing subject will be moving.

2. Verify that the location will allow the following three conditions can be met: (a) the camera angle will be cinematically desirable, (b) the subject’s background will not be too bright with IR light (such as sunlight thru a window), and (c) where there will not be competing IR light reflected off of the subject (typically from windows or sunlight).

3. Make sure that Jigabot devices are placed within Coverage created by the moving subject’s Attached Emitters (See also, Users’ Guide: IR Emitters & Power Pack.)

Always test your Tracking Environment, Emit-ter Attachment, and Placements of Jigabot devices, before beginning live tracking.

Avoid tracking environments where very bright IR sources exist immediately behind the subject (such as shining thru windows on a bright sunny day), or reflecting off of the subject (such as when sunlight or spotlights produce IR emissions). By changing location, or time of day when you track, you can reduce interference (IR light) from the sun.

Steps for Jigabot Operation:

1. Before operating a Jigabot device, make sure that your Jigabot unit is charged.

2. Check battery power by pressing the red button on the Battery Power Indicator. LEDs will illuminate in a cumulative way to show charge: 1 LED=20%, and 5 LEDs=100%.

3. Switch power ON by rocking the Power Switch. The green LED will illuminate when the power is ON. This is the only indication that power is ON. After a boot-up time of about 35 seconds, the Jigabot unit will begin tracking.

WARNINGSJigabot devices are precision elec-tronic devices, and are inheretly dangerous. Use are your own risk! Jigabot devices are intended to be used only in ways defined within Jigabot User Documentation, by trained professionals. They should not be operated by others, or used where others might get too close. Besides previously disclosed warn-ings, common sense saftey is re-quired, including the following:

Liquids. Jigabot devices are not intended to get wet. Water or other liquids will short-circuit the electron-ics, and cause failure.

Looking. Never look into an IR Emit-ter; eye damage could occur. Do not block IR Sensor module. Without direct line of site the Jigabot will not track.

Clothing. Attachment of the IR Emit-ter by its spring clip to more fragile cloth or clothing can damage the clothing.

Falling & Bumping. An Emitter & Power device are both made of alu-minum and very hard. Do not attach where your body could be injured in the event of falling or bumping into another object.

Heat. Jigabot devices are sensitive to heat, and can be damaged or mal-function if they overheat. Keep the aluminum side of the Control Box from getting too hot, or from operating in direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

Cables. Never hold a Jigabot device by any cable (including its Sensor Cable)! Also, do no leave cables unattended, or use cables in ways that can cause choking or other physical injury.

Filters. Jigabot devices use glass filters which are fragile and if broken could cause bodily injury.

Batteries. The IR Power module con-tains Li-Ion batteries. Do not expose them to extremes of heat (120 F) or cold (32 F).

Charging. Jigabot 5 devices should only be charged using the included Li-ion desktop charger: 100-240VAC, 50/60Hz. Output DC: 12.6V, 2.0A. IR Power packs should only be charged with supplied USB chargers.

Pinching. All Jigabot devices are mo-tor-powered robots which can pinch or even crush fingers or hands. Do not put hands near Jigabot devices when they are powered ON.

LIMITED WARRANTYJigabot warranties its devices against faulty parts and workmanship for a period of 1 year. Improper use of devices, including not using Jigabot devices according to all User Docu-mentation, will void your warranty. Judgment of original quality of parts and workmanship, and of cause of failure, is solely Jigabot’s. This war-ranty is subject to change at any time without notice.
