New Start Ministry

O ur refugee co-sponsorship project now has a name: New Start Ministry.

This name was chosen by our leadership team. What a wonderful description of

our initiative, helping to give a new

start to the life of a refugee family.

Please join us in celebrating this

wonderful new identity.

And, another reason to rejoice -

the leadership team for New Start

Ministry is now complete! Jim

Trompeter of St. Paul's has agreed to head up the Employment function. Please join me in

giving thanks for each of the volunteers who have stepped into leadership roles in this

important ministry. The next steps will be for the leadership team to continue building their

own support networks among all volunteers, and to work on the IRIS-required self-

assessment form.

Once the self-assessment is submitted to, and accepted by, IRIS, we will begin our

internal "green light" process. It is possible we could be assigned a family in the next three

months, if we can pull our organization together.

Please continue praying for us, and the New Start Ministry.

Peace, Susan Suhr

Stewardship Reflection

“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny

himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Luke 9:23

T his Sunday’s Gospel calls us to consider how

we serve God. Do we consume like the

Pharisee who simply reclines at the table and expects

to be served? Or, do we contribute like the woman

who kneels before Jesus and washes His feet? Every

day we must make a choice. Take or give? Consume

or contribute? Recline or serve?

“It’s Magic”

J esus heals one of the “least and lost” - one who was feared and had

been rejected by those around him. When he wants to join Jesus on his travels, Jesus tells him to “Return to your home, and tell how much good God has done for you.” And we are urged to do the same: Live in God’s love for you, and tell others God’s story!

F ood Collection Sunday The third Sunday of each month we encourage everyone to bring in food

donations for the Woodbury Food Bank. For an up to date list of the priority needs of the Woodbury Food Bank see the handout sheet in food collection

basket in the narthex. The food bank is not able to accept items past their labeled expiration date.

Immediate food bank request are: Canned cat food & canned chicken. Gluten free items. No chicken noodle soup! Thank you.

This Weekend’s Readings

Deliverance and Liberation

1 Kings 19:1-15a

I n our first lesson we hear how the fearful and despairing Elijah is sustained by an

angel and, after traveling forty days and nights, is met by the Lord, not in wind,

earthquake, or fire, but in a sound of sheer silence.

Psalm 42 and 43

The psalmist laments an inability to come to the house of God and thirsts for the

presence of the Lord. A plea to God by one who is persecuted and in distress, to be able to

come and worship in the Lord’s temple

Galatians 3:23-29

In this New Testament lesson we hear that the era of domination by the law is passed.

Through faith all find themselves baptized into a unity in Christ. Formerly we are like small

children who had to be closely watched. Now, through God’s justification, we are given the

status of young

adults coming into

their maturity.

Whatever the

former barriers of

race, class, or

gender, we are

together heirs of the

promise to

Abraham.

Luke 8:26-39

In our gospel reading Jesus sends many demons out of a man who calls himself Legion

and who is then restored to his right mind. The crazed man lived a wild life out among the

tombs. When Jesus commands the demonic to come out of Legion, “they” recognize him as

“Son of the Most High God.” The demons will end up in a herd of pigs and then be

destroyed by drowning, but the man will be enabled to return home and to tell of Jesus.

Altar Guild Seeks New Members

A re you looking for a ministry at St. Paul’s where you can participate and learn as you go and it does not involve reading or being in front of a group

of people? Consider the Altar Guild. The Altar Guild is a quiet ministry. Their work is done behind the scene, before the service begins and after it ends.

Each member belongs to a team of 3 or 4 and the teams rotate every 2 weeks (1st and 16th of each month). We are looking for new members to join our ministry. Men, women and young adults are welcome to join. The time commitment is minimal as the set up and clean up take a half hour or less per service and members do not handle all services.

If you are interested, please contact Lynda Jones at 203-263-0855 or at [email protected]. You can also speak with any Altar Guild member listed in the bulletin.
