Woof….woof... Those are the barking sounds that we have been hearing for the past 1 week in my house. We’ve got two puppies on board! One is named Hera and another is Jenna. It was an adoption. The pups were found in the drain and a good Samaritan saved their lives, together with 7 others. I had plans in getting a puppy and since they were available, I decided to get two instead. When I went to this place to pick them up, interestingly, this lady has a few dogs of her own and 30 over cats, all rescued. So I asked her why she saves them, and her reply was that she cannot see them helpless, with no proper food and shelter. I think, this is what we Rotarians do too! Every time we see discomfort in a school or a community, we extend our hands wherever possible.
I don’t know if I’m generalizing, but I say this because of my experience with our club, the Rotary Club of Pudu. Anytime there is a natural disaster, a request from the community for facili-ties or any of that sort, our club will quickly form a committee and start the fund raising. When we start the collection, we don’t stop there. We make sure that there is a ceremony to mark the end of a particular project, and this ceremony is showcased to the public if possible so that more people will participate in these activity, with the hope that they will also be of help to the society. With all these happenings, one can only conclude that Rotary is the way of life. Here, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my fellow Rotarians of RC Pudu for all the good work and sincere assistance to the world, and I am proud to be a member of this 5 -Star club...
I love you people!

I am writing this message in a rather great hurry because I have to get to the KLIA2 in time for my flight to Songkhla. What’s happening there? Well, there’s the Intercity meet between our District and District 3330 Thailand. The Thais appear to be doing quite a bit on fellowship. I am impressed; because just last week Rtn Iswaran and PP Alex Chang went for a Cycling Fellowship at Songkhla. That reminds me – of late some people have been harping on fellowship among our Club members. Good, but what do we understand by fellowship? Is it the eating sessions at restaurants before, during or after a meeting; or at the Bar? No, I wouldn’t like to think so. In this day and age, fellowship can take many forms. Obviously the weekly meetings are an opportunity for fellow-ship; and the above two as well. Attendance at our Club events is another form of fellowship. Our Malaysian unique habits of opening our houses at the three main festivals – Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali – are opportu-nities for fellowship. The next one coming up is Chinese New Year; and PP Gary Lim is having an Open House on the first day of CNY 2016 whilst PE Sandy Soh is having her Open House on 13 Feb 2016.
Interest groups can also be avenues for the development of fellow-ship. We’ll call them Fellowships instead of Interest groups. So we can have Cycling fellowship; Golf fellowship; Fishing fellowship; Bowl-ing fellowship; 4x4/SUV Adventure fellowship; Climbing fellowship; Photography fellowship and many, many more. It can be very exclu-sive or open to other clubs and friends. It can be inter-districts as well like the Tri-club thing with RC Dhonburi and Singapore West that PP Alex Chang is promoting. With it there’s also the opportunity for service – that’s what Rotary is about; service. So don’t wait to be invited. You are Rotarians; you have made that
Rotary Pledge. Or have you forgotten? The DG didn’t invite me to go
to Songkhla, I knew about it through the eGroup emails by PP Tiffany
Tan of RC Titiwangsa. I decided to go because I am one of the DG’s 5-star club presidents. I have a responsibility to
support my DG; it’s an obligation. So likewise my fellow Rotarians, especially the new members, your Rotary Pledge
should be very fresh in your mind. And “Service Above Self” always.

Rotary Club of Pudu 2015-16 Page 7
This is our first Club Assembly in the 2nd half of RY 2015-16 or what I’d like to call 2nd Term. It’s the 4th in the se-
ries since July 2015.
I lost two Secretaries in the 1st Term. Veronique who was a keen and hardworking Rtn had to withdraw because she,
being a foreign national, was not acceptable to ROS. She was replaced by Rtn Laura Lee who came forward although
she had done one tour as Secretary before under PP Alex Chang. After four months she too decided to resign the job
due to pressure of work.
So now I am your President as well as Secretary. It’s an additional burden but I think I can handle it. BTW, this will
be my 3rd time as Secretary in my Rotary career – first time in 1977 under PP Kumar Tharmalingam, second time in
1995 under PP Dato Jasani and now 2016 under myself. So 2x President and 3x Secretary for a 76 year old septuage-
narian.
Thank you for the trust you placed on me to lead you out of the “lair of beautiful sirens” you were in. It’s quite a
comfortable zone that even the experienced “old hands” got lulled into it. Unfortunately, this “ship” is still lacking in
modern navigation equipment, because we didn’t invest in them. We are still using the old paper maps and charts and
the theodolite even. And we don’t have the services of a navigator or pilot either. So, it’ll be quite an achievement if
I get you all out of it with the ship intact and no one overboard, or God forbid; mutiny.
As you all probably know I was from the military service. 35 years in all (half my lifetime;) with 20 years of it in sen-
ior leadership positions. Hence, I carry quite a bit of that style in my leadership. However, right at the beginning of
the 1st term when I spoke to you during the Presidential address, I intimated to you about the 4 character traits and
combinations thereof, of people ie “Choleric, Melancholy, Sanguine, Phlegmatic.” It’s from the bestselling book by
Florence Littauer titled “Personality Plus.” Get the book; you’ll understand yourself a lot better after having read it.
You’ll under people a lot better too; and since we are in the “people business” it’ll help us do a better job.
I am a choleric-melancholy, almost 50-50. In other words, I like to take the lead and tell people what to do; but I am
also meticulous, pay attention to details and like things to be orderly. Hence you’d have noticed that I support my
cases (and ideas) by Board papers. With the paper everyone will have a good picture of what is being proposed and
should be helpful in making decisions objectively. If you disagree with any points, by all means let us debate it. If
you disagree completely, then produce a better counter-paper. And we’ll debate that too. That’s the way decision
makers should work. Even if we have a compliant Board, at least we have a good record and documentation of the
whole rigmarole.
I don’t believe in mediocrity either. I believe, if you have to do something, do it well, with class and dignity. Use the
news media to the max. And let the Rotary world know about it also. We are encouraged by RI to put our good pro-
jects into the Project Showcase in the RI website. Do it. Don’t wait for me to tell you to do it.
On the star ranking; why be easily satisfied with just so-so in the ranking. Why not be No 1. Numero Uno. The effort
is the same. And by doing it together it’d be quite fun as well.
Well, going back to my service background. I like the Navy, although I was from the Air Force. So I am going to use
a Navy analogy here. I am running this Club like I am the Captain of a ship. The BOD is my compliment of ship offic-
ers; and the rest of you are my crew. Some are young seamen looking forward to sail the world on the high seas of
Rotary. Others are hairy seamen, experienced and weathered, but sailing along nevertheless. I also have an Admiral
on board; watching. Our ship belongs to a flotilla called D3300 and we are all sailing in a certain compass direction,
lack of modern navigation facilities notwithstanding. The big guy is the Admiral of the Fleet, way out there at his Chi-
cago HQ. He is a traveller too, and recently he was with us for just one day on 6 Dec 2105 promoting the Rotary CLP
mantra.
Now, it’d be quite a problem for the Captain to manage this ship if the ship offic-
ers are not with him. He says go in the same direction as the mother ship in the
flotilla, but the 1st mate wants to go in the opposite direction. We just got out of
the “lair of the sirens” and we want to go back there; almost like abandoning the
flotilla. Is that a smart thing to do?
Think…how are you going to get your supplies of fuel, food and water if you
abandon the flotilla?
Do you get my drift?

A total of 59 participants from 10 rotary clubs attended the workshop - RCBKS, RC Kulai, RC Yong Peng, RC Pontian,
RC Alor Setar, RC Tanjung Bungah, RC Sentul, RC Bandar Sunway, RC Pantai Valley, RC Titiwangsa.
The workshop started with speaker Datuk Dr. Paul Chan, Vice Chancellor of HELP University, on the topic Aligning Our Passions and Mission – The HELP Story. Dr Paul Chan gave a very inspiring and insightful account of why and how he started HELP University. He shared how HELP University is fully committed and actualizing its mission and values.
2nd session topic was Understanding Our Motivation – The Giver
and the Gift by speaker Alex Lui (Head of the Department of Psy-chology, HELP University). Alex Lui highlighted that emotion brain in teenagers grows faster than the thinking brain. It is imperative that mentors connect with teenagers at the emotional level first.
In the afternoon, the 3rd session topic was Understanding and Evaluating Our Giving, by speaker Eric Bryan Amaladas (Director of CAREERsense, HELP University). The essence of the Art of Giving is to give unconditionally – Thanks-Giving.
Panel sharing and Q&A by Dr. Kong VS, Joey Chung, Anthony Pinto and Dr Yee YL.
Participants reflected, in small groups, on their motivation and effectiveness in the mentoring process.
There was very positive feedback all round with participants looking forward to follow up activities for the rest of 2016.
RCBKS REF Chair Aravind then closed the workshop at about 5PM.
"You can't give what you don't have; and you can't get what you don't give."
With danger lurking everywhere, a talk on 'Criminal Signals' by Eric Chew was really welcomed by the members of the
RC of Greater Kuala Lumpur at our regular meeting on Monday.
Mr. Eric Chew is the Chairman of the Neighborhood Watch (Rukun Tetangga) in Taman Gasing Indah which started on
27, January, 2010. He together with his team have transformed
their high crime neighborhood to winning the coveted MBPJ Petal-
ing Jaya Town Council Award for “Best Safe Neighborhood”
He is a member of the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation
(MCPF), Kuala Lumpur and also a member of Asian Professional
Security Association Malaysia.

Rotary is releasing $35 million in grants to support polio immunization activities and research in nine countries, includ-ing Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The funds will build on last year’s historic achievement of stopping the transmission of the wild poliovirus in Nigeria and all of Africa. “We are closer than ever to achieving a polio-free world,” says Michael K. McGovern, chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. “To ensure that no child ever again suffers the devastating effects of this disease, we must all ensure that the necessary funds and political will are firmly in place in 2016.” The funds announced this week include $11.4 million in Pakistan and $6 million in Afghanistan, the two remaining polio-endemic countries. Funding will also support immun-ization activities in several countries still at-risk, including
Nigeria ($5.5. million), Ethiopia ($4.1 million), Chad ($2 million), Somalia ($1.8 million), Cameroon ($1.6 million), Iraq ($1.6 million), and India ($618,000). An additional $355,000 will be allocated to polio research. Learn how you can help us eradicate polio Give to end polio
With more than 25 million people living in and around Seoul, you might think it will be difficult to find green space when you’re visiting for the 2016 Rotary International Convention from 28 May to 1 June. But Koreans are a nature-loving people and they have created numerous escapes from the pavement jungle to hike, bike, swim, and sail. The broad Han River, which runs through Seoul, provides an easily accessible respite. Ride a bike along the wide trails that hug the river, or hop on a ferry or rent a boat for a leisurely cruise. The parks along the Han range from mani-cured gardens to wetlands, with spectacular views of the river and the skyline. For a piece of history visit Bugaksan Mountain, which rises behind the presidential residence, the Blue House. The trail was closed for 40 years after North Korean commandos climbed the mountain in an attempt to assassinate the South Korean president and was reopened in 2006. Seoul Olympic Park remains a popular destination. This is no small city park; it houses six stadiums and a huge wooded area. An outdoor art gallery holds more than 200 sculptures. If you’re traveling with kids, stop at Seoul Children’s Grand Park, which houses a zoo, a botanic garden, a water play-ground, a musical fountain, and an amusement park – everything to keep the little ones entertained for the day.

GET INSPIRED !
A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, "Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like." The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water. But the people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. The Lord said, 'You have seen Hell.' They then went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man's mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laugh-ing and talking. The holy man said, "I don’t understand." "It is simple" said the Lord, "In this place the people have learned to feed one another."

This time around, I thought it will be good to drop the fun and remind ourselves the Rotary Pledge...
REMEMBER ME?
Rotary Pledge
With the acceptance of me as a Rotarian, I, _____,
pledge
Not to be just a passive member, but to be part of
Rotary’s driving force
To make my Rotary participation and attendance
a joy and not have it become a burden
To serve my Club in any capacity in which I am
asked to serve
To recognize my community as a particular plot of
ground given to me to toil not only for my own
security, but for that of all mankind
To be an ambassador of my vocation, to my club,
my community and society, in support of my
affiliation with Rotary
To be proud to associate with people of all
cultures, creeds and races; knowing with deep
conviction that international understanding is the
root and not the fruit of international peace
To put Rotary to work where I work
To live Rotary where I live
In other words, I will make every effort of body, mind
and spirit not just to be a member of the Rotary Club
of PUDU but to be a ROTARIAN.
