“A nation that destroys its soils, destroys itself.”— U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1937

Common Erosion Problems

Billions of dollars are spent each year to manage the effects of erosion. Slopes are washed away by storm water runoff, channels are filled withsediment, shorelines can be altered forever and topsoil can be lost to harvests.Designers, specifiers and installers can prevent much of this destruction byusing the latest developments in erosion control. Western Excelsior provides the products and expertise landowners, contractors and government agenciesneed to protect natural resources from land and soil loss. Western Excelsiorsolutions save many natural resources, save time and save money.

The impact of erosion on the environment can be serious andpotentially irreversible. Our landscape, water sources, agriculturalresources and wildlife can all be affected by the devastation.

In March 2003, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency implemented Phase IIof the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Currently, theregulations apply to virtually all construction activities. Any construction site of one acre or more must comply with the Phase II regulations. NPDESrequirements pertain to simple erosion control on slopes, drainage channels, shorelines and the control of sediment.

State and local officials also regulate the control and release of in-situ soilmaterial. Western Excelsior is approved for use in virtually every state and for all types of projects.

Erosion Control Regulation

Western Excelsior has the expertise to aid in compliance with NPDES andother regulations. Further, Western Excelsior manufactures the productsnecessary to fulfill the requirements for any erosion problems contractors, designers and specifiers face.

High-Altitude Rocky Mountain Aspen yield anoutstanding excelsior for this purpose. Typically harvested from elevations over 8,000 feet and in a semi-arid climate, Rocky Mountain Aspen-producedexcelsior consists of strong, durable and absorbent fibers.

Use of excelsior as erosion and sediment control completesthe cycle from harvesting to re-growth. Recycling natural components in the establishment of newvegetation to mitigate erosion results is the highest form of environmental stewardship.

Environmental Benefits of Erosion Control

Erosion is a naturally occurring process on all lands, witheffects ranging from topsoil degradation to gullies andshoreline degeneration. Soil erosion can developpractically unnoticed, over time, or it can occur at analarming rate, with potentially catastrophic consequences.

A Rolled Erosion Control Product (RECP) is a matrixconsisting of various organic or inorganic materialsconfined by netting, stitching and/or geo-composites.When properly placed, RECPs prevent loss of soil and aid in the establishment of healthy vegetation, to prevent erosion in the future.

Western Excelsior products areengineered to control erosion onslopes, drainage channels andshorelines; establish vegetation in bareareas; reinforce the stems and roots ofvegetation; and control the release of

sediment into streams, lakes and rivers. Western Excelsiorproducts are engineered to provide variable longevity, allowing for degradation quickly after placement, or apermanent presence. All Western Excelsior products serveas a mulching layer and the EXCEL PP5 series of TurfReinforcement Mats provide permanent enhancement ofvegetation stability.

Leave the end of the blanketunstapled to allow for the overlap shown in Figure E.Place the downstream blanket underneath the upstreamblanket to form a shingle pattern. Staple the seam asshown in Figure D. Secure the downstream blanket withthe stapling pattern shown in Figure C, which reflectsthe minimum staples to be used. More staples may berequired to ensure the blanket is sufficiently secured toresist mowers and foot traffic, and to ensure the blanketis in contact with the soil surface over the entire area ofthe blanket.

Continue Along the Slope to Complete the InstallationOverlap adjacent blankets as shown in Figure F andrepeat Step 4. Secure the toe of the slope using astapling pattern shown in Figure D. Secure the edges ofthe installed product by stapling at 1.0' intervals alongthe terminal edge.

Site Preparation and SeedingPrepare the site to the design profile and grade, removing debris, rocks and clods. Ground surfacesshould be smooth prior to installation, to ensure theblanket remains in contact with the channel. Preparethe soil, including any necessary application of lime, fertilizer and seed.

Staple SelectionAt a minimum, 6” long by 1” crown, 11 gauge staplesshould be used to secure the blanket to the groundsurface. Installation in rocky, sandy or other loose soilmay require longer staples.

Excavate Anchor Trench and Secure the BlanketExcavate a trench along the top of the channel side slopesand the upstream terminal end of the channel to securethe edges of the blanket. The trench should run along thelength of the installation and be 6” wide by 6” deep. Staplethe blanket along the bottom of the trench, fill withcompacted soil, overlap the blanket towards the body ofthe installation and secure it with a row of staples (Shownin Figures A, B and D).

Secure Body of the BlanketRoll the blanket downslope from the anchor trench.Staple the body of the blanket following the patternshown in Figure C. Leave the end of the blanketunstapled to allow for the overlap shown in Figure E.Place the downstream blanket underneath the upstreamblanket to form a shingle pattern. Our EXCEL Aspen Excelsior Logs consistof a machine-produced high-altitudeRocky Mountain Aspen excelsiormatrix confined by a synthetic net toform a log of specific length anddiameter. EXCEL Aspen Excelsior Logsare designed to reduce hydraulicenergy and filter sediment-laden flowin channels and on slopes. The logs areflexible, to conform to soil surfaces, and are secured by staking. EXCELAspen Excelsior Sediment Logs can beordered in custom lengths to meetspecific job requirements.

EXCEL Aspen Excelsior Logs create atemporary water-permeable structurethat offers superior soil interception, filtration and containment properties. They are specifically engineered to beused on slopes to minimizedisplacement of in-situ sediments, inchannels, as small check dams, and torestrict sediment-laden flow frominlets. Sediment control devices arecost-effective solutions when on-sitesediment can be captured in a singlelocation or to protect a culvert ordrain inlet.

Our EXCEL Straw Logs consist of a100% certified weed-free strawmatrix confined by a tubularsynthetic net. They are designed toreduce hydraulic energy and filtersediment-laden flow in channels andon slopes. The logs are flexible, toconform to the soil surface, and aresecured by staking.

Available in a variety of standarddiameters and lengths, EXCEL Straw Logs can also be ordered incustom lengths to meet specific job conditions. EXCEL Straw Logsoffer many advantages as aneffective and economical alternativeto conventional sediment control measures.

In addition to a full line of RolledErosion Control and SedimentControl Products, Western Excelsiormanufactures 100% Aspen Mulch, which consists entirely of Aspenwood fibers and Aspen Turbo Mulch,a 50%/50% blend of wood fibers and recycled cellulose material. Both are designed to behydraulically applied. A natural orchemical tackifier may be added tothe mulch when loaded forapplication, to help bond thematerial to the ground surface. Bothmaterials can also be dyed to aid intracking the application. Mulchmaterials provide minimal erosioncontrol and are best suited for smallapplications, low-risk applications orsmall areas where RECP installationis impossible.
