Earthquake Situation Report as of October 03, 2013 | 1

Brief about the earthquake in Awaran and Kech Districts

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck district Awaran and Kech in Balochistan on 24th September, 2013. It killed people, destroyed houses and cut communications with worst affected areas of Awaran and Kech. According to initial assessment report of NRSP team, 537 death cases of Awaran district and 44 death cases of Kech district reported and a large number of injured people also reported. Population about 123,209 in Awaran and 9224 in Kech districts affected. 90% houses of Awaran district except Tehsil Jahoo and 90% houses of union

council Dandar in Kech District damaged completely and 10% damage partially. All infrastructures including schools, health facilities, mosques, Madrisah and roads also damaged completely. Water and sanitation systems also damaged completely. People are facing issue of acute shortage of food and drinking water especially children. Women are facing issue of shelters due to culturally Pardah and heat during the day. For health services, people need medical camps in remote areas of Awaran because health services are being provided only in Awaran town. Due to unavailability of doctors and health facilities in the remote areas, people are being shifted to Karachi for treatment on self-help basis.

Another 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit district Awaran on 28th September, 2013. It killed 20 people and injured 25 in union council Nokjo of Tehsil Mashkey. It brought more difficulties and fears for affectees. Tehsil Mashkay is the most affected area of the district Awaran.

Current Situation

Majority of affected families in UC Parwar, Gishkor, Teertaj, Gajjar, UC Nokjo in Awaran district and UC Dandar in Kech district are still living under open sky and they need shelters, water and NFIs. Affected people have no kitchen set for cooking and they are demanding for necessary utensils and kitchen set and shortage of drinking water. There are still shortage of food and drinking water observed because there are no food stocks in whole 6 Union Councils of District Awaran and UC Dandar of Kech district, because ration stock of each


family is under mud of fallen structures and Markets as well. After massive earthquake temperature has risen to 47 centigrade and ground water has gone very underneath. Aid from Government and Civil Society is limited to Awaran area due to damaged & broken roads and infrastructures and shortage of transportation. NRSP team and Local Support Organizations of Kech and Awaran districts are completing registration of affected families and providing relief to affected families with support of different partner organizations. Tehsil Mashkay is the most affected area of the district Awaran.

RESPONSE OF NRSP

Immediately after the earthquake, NRSP undertook following actions:

NRSP established a liaison office at Uthal, district Lasbela NRSP prepared its offices and team of Kech/Turbat, Awaran and Lasbela for emergency response

Uthal deputed in Karachi for procurement purpose 3 Local support organizations of Kech district are working on assessment and emergency response in

in district Awaran NRSP supplied medicines to district Awaran on 25th September, 2013 NRSP Islamabad is sending a container of shelter box Tent to Awaran and UC Dandar today with

support of Rotary International. Local support organization Dorbun Hoshab and Kumakar Sami provided dates and ration to affectees

of UC Dandar in Kech district. 42 water tanks (600 litres) reached to Awaran which sent from NRSP Uthal office with support of

Oxfam GB. NRSP Rahim Yar Khan Region sent 45 shelter box tents to Awaran today. NRSP started water tankering in UC Awaran today with support of Oxfam GB. NRSP Badin Region sent a truck of health and hygiene kits, water bladder and generators but still not

reached to Awaran NRSP distributed 45 shelter box tent in Awaran


NRSP rehabilitated Water supply system of Malar UC Teertaj in Awaran NRSP purchased 250 tent from Karachi and sent to Awaran Water tanks installation started in Awaran

September 27, 2013

District Lasbela has dispatched 13 truck load of Health and hygiene Kits, NFI. 2 Water tankers, 60 Water tanks (960 litre each tank capacity)

4 water supplies in Malar and Bazdad areas have been rehabilitated and functionate. Diesel also provided.

Three team of NRSP comprising each on 5 members are working in UC Gishkor, UC Awaran and UC Teertaj.

LSO Sichkan & LSO Wajah-e-Bagh members worked with NRSP Team voluntarily, and LSO Wajah e Bagh has donated 25 food packets to NRSP for distribution to earthquake affected HHs


LSO Absar collected water coolers, water tanks and other NFIs for distribution in Dandar. Registration of affected families of Awaran district still in progress, four teams are working for registration of affected HHs, and total 4790

HHs are registered yet. 900 HHs of 8 villages were provided 15 water tankers today. 4 Government Water Supplies rehabilitated and Diesels provided to supply waters in tanks. Following items distributed by NRSP in District Awaran and Kech.

NRSP Response in Awaran:

NRSP has rehabilitated 5 Community water supplies in union council Awaran, Teertaj and providing Diesel on daily basis.

NRSP is a member of Awaran Disaster Forum which comprising on 22 organization NRSP staff with support of LSO Kolwah and LSO Sichkan completed registration of 5500

families in UCs Awaran, Teertaj Gishkor of Awaran district till today and still registration is ongoing.

NRSP with the support of OXFOM-GB provided 8 tankers of water to 700 households in Union Council Awaran and Teertaje.

NRSP Response in Dandar:

3 NRSP staff is staying in a tent of LSO Bandi office area in UC Dandar of Kech district from last 3 days for relief activities.

NRSP rehabilitated 4 water supply schemes and providing them diesel in UC Dandar of district Kech, 390 families benefited from these water supply schemes today.

NRSP sent 3500 LLINs (long lasting insecticide treated nets) to UC Dandar of district Kech with support of GFATM-10 Project. So that affected families can be protected from mosquitoes and prevent malaria disease.

NRSP staff with support of LSO Bandi completed registration of 1000 families in UC Dandar of Kech district till today and still registration is ongoing.

October 01, 2013


With support of Oxfam GB

7 tankers of water provided to 700 families in Union Councils Awaran and Teertaje. 398 Hygiene Kits distributed in UC Awaran and UC Parwar Mashkay. 414 Buckets distributed to 414 families of UC Parwar and UC Awaran 394 Jery Cans distributed in UC Parwar and Awaran.

103 Shelter Box distributed in UC Gishkor and Teertaje. 55 Food Package distributed among affectees in UC Awaran. 2 First Aid Kit distributed today.

NRSP Response in Dandar District Kech:

3 NRSP staff is still staying in a tent of LSO Bandi office area in UC Dandar of Kech district from last 4 days for relief activities.

NRSP rehabilitated 4 more water supply schemes and provided them diesel, 545 families benefited from 8 rehabilitated water supply schemes in UC Dandar of Kech district.


3500 LLINs reached to UC Dandar and NRSP team distributed 236 LLINs among 183 families with support of GFATM-10 Project.

October 02, 2013



10 tankers of water provided to 900 families in Union Councils Awaran and Teertaje. 654 Hygiene Kits distributed in UC Awaran. 354 Buckets distributed to 354 families of UC Awaran 394 Jerry Cans distributed in UC Parwar and Awaran.

NRSP

52 tents distributed in UC Awaran 100 Food Package distributed among affectees in UC Awaran. 13 First Aid Kit distributed today in UC Awaran. 6700 families’ registration has been completed in District Awaran yet.


NRSP rehabilitated two more water supplies and provided them diesel, till today total 10 water supply rehabilitated and supplying water to 1072 families in UC Dandar.

NRSP distributed 819 LLINs to 480 families in UC dander with support of GFATM-10 Project. LSO Absar members reached to UC Dandar with NFIs which collected and purchased on self-

help basis, LSO Absar distributed NFIs to 182 families in UC Dandar. Book keeper of LSO Absaris supporting LSO Bandi and health facility incharge for LLINs

distribution and record keeping. NRSP district office Awaran sent 200 hygiene kits, 96 water coolers and jerry cans to UC

Dandar.

06 tankers of water provided to 900 families in Union Council Awaran. 04 Hygiene Kits distributed in UC Awaran. 112 Buckets distributed to 112households of UC Awaran 164 Jerry Cans distributed in UC Awaran.

With support of PPAF

Two Mobile Medical Centers have been arranged and three Mobile units will start work from tomorrow in Union Council Teertaje, Gishkor and Dandar. Medical Doctors, LHVs, and Dispensers have been identified.

Procurement committee formed and purchasing of Shelter, NFI, Bucket, bathing space, transitional latrine and food items have been started.

WithRotary Club France

50 shelters Box have been reached from France for Awaran.

With Save the Children

Agreement between NRSP and Save the Children get signed for supporting 1000 Households of Union Council Nokjo Tehsil Mashkay Awaran.

Current Situation:

There is a high demand of NFIs, shoes/Chappal for children and Dopatta for women.


NRSP distributed 103 hygiene kits, 213 jerry cans and 71 water coolers to 103 affected families with support of Oxfam GB.

NRSP distributed 691 LLINs among 396 affected families with support of GFATM-10 Project.

NRSP is supplying water to 1072 families through 10 rehabilitated water supplies which are being provided diesel.

NRSP is also supplying water to 281 families through a water tanker of government department by providing diesel.

CHALLENGES

Shortage of vehicle transportation to send Aid to rural and affected areas. Unavailability of water and water tankers. Boring wells have fallen and ground water has gone beneath.

Shortage of food and Shelter in far flung areas of Mashkay and Awaran.
