WE EXIST TO LOVE, SERVE, AND PLEASE GOD!
If President Obama is on the America for Christ offering mailing
list, the list is more extensive than I thought, but the President’s
message at the funeral for slain Pastor Clementa Pinckey of
Emmanuel AME Church focused on God’s grace, as does the
offering theme this year—Grace: Walking Together.
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all,
training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the
present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and
godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifesta-
tion of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ (Titus
2:11-13, NRSV).
This devotional thought, so relevant for our time is found in the
offering materials: “Titus addresses problems related to trans-
mitting the faith from generation to generation, the spiritual
health of Christians, and distortions of Christian teachings...After
enumerating several “must-dos,” the letter to Titus reminds us of
the foundation of those imperatives, namely God’s grace. The
epitome of Christian teaching is that discipleship is grounded
always in God’s action for us in Jesus:
Christian discipleship begins and ends with grace. The impact
of any Christian witness is diminished if those efforts flow out of
insecure, driven, demanding and graceless lives. The founda-
tion of discipleship, that we are justified by Christ, means we
don’t need to, and in fact cannot, justify ourselves through
activity, accomplishments or acquisition (“Learning the Way,”

PASTOR’S MESSAGE
Cassandra Carkuff Williams, Rowman and Littlefield).
...Grace alone is the fuel that runs discipleship. This is the message that Titus had been sent
to proclaim in Crete to despised and marginalized people, who had as much right as any-
one to the good news of God’s grace. This is the message we are called to create space
for in our hearts, our churches and our world.”
We come to Christ’s table this Sunday—the ultimate grace-space. Let us celebrate to-
gether our Lord’s gift to us. See you on Sunday and/or at Wonderful Wednesday Worship!

FROM THE MUSIC BENCH
I want to shout out some praise to Amelia Ryan for singing with the Gathering
Team on Children and Youth Sunday. Her Oceans solo was superb! Also,
what a great job Khani Cossa and Evelyn Tao did with their Pachelbel's Can-
on violin and piano duet!
It's been a real delight having Grace Rhee
with us for a few weeks. Last Sunday was
very special as we premiered Linguistic Prel-
ude, a lovely original piece, introduced to
me by Frank Henderson.
It was very well received and Grace and I
will try to reprise it sometime in the Fall if she
gets a weekend to come home. Frank
hopes to put it on YouTube, so be on the
lookout for it.
There's a change in date for Leeland
Whitted's piece. He will be able to play on 7/26 instead of 7/12. His Offertory
selection will be a jazzy version of Jesus Loves Me.
I hope to eventually be able to acknowledge all of your favorite hymn re-
quests. The ones most requested were Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art,
Great is Thy Faithfulness, Shout to the Lord, We Are Singing, and For the Beauty
of the Earth. Obviously, it will take quite a few weeks to sing all 52 requests
and to keep them appropriate to the scripture and message. But, hopefully
we'll enjoy the journey!
The past two weeks have included the favorite requests, Here I Am, Lord,
Amazing Grace, Great is Thy Faithfulness and O God, Our Help in Ages Past.
The next 2 Sundays will include, You Are My King, We Are Singing For the Lord
is Our Light, Because He Lives, Panis Angelicus (Offertory), I Love You Lord,
Take My Life and Let it Be, Here I Am to Worship, 10,000 Reasons, How Great
Thou Art, Trust and Obey and Finlandia (Postlude).
