Bobbie Mattson had an idea to get her special ed students more active and learning more real-world activities. What if they delivered coffee to the staff of THHS? They would provide a needed service along with» Keeping themselves physically active» Learning job skills » Becoming connected in a more real way to staff and general ed students

As the idea developed, she realized that this could be a way to bring in other departments such as business students to help with the marketing and finance of this little business venture, shop stu-dents to help build needed pieces of equipment, engineering students to laser engrave staff mugs and the list just keeps getting bigger! In addition, this could develop into offering more products that could also serve the student body through mobile and/or a permanent school store.

So, Hand in Hand was born. Last year, a survey was sent out to staff to gauge interest in the service and a trial run with 12 teachers and other staff took place to see how a service like this would work. The reception was excel-lent, but the school year was nearly over, and it was decided to start the program this fall/winter. A student contest was held to create a logo and the program was ready to go.

Official subscriptions were offered and 32 staff mem-bers to date have responded as the first customers of Hand in Hand Coffee. They receive cappucci-no, drip coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea or chai tea twice a week. The program began November 5th. Community Education Director, Chris Langenbrun-ner (one of the Hand in Hand subscribers) says, “I love coffee and it is great seeing all the new con-nections and how this program is bringing the school closer together!”

Hand in Hand subscription cups are “personalized” for each recipient.

gets a hot cup of java every Tuesday and Thursday morning.

FOUR DAY WEEKThe Minnesota Department of Education has notified the district that continuation of ISD 381 Four Day School week will be allowed for the 2020-2021 school year with school board approval.School closing due to weather is part of our winter season.Across Lake Superior School District we coordinate with Lake County, the Sheriff’s office and District staff to assess weather and road conditions and determine whether to call a snow day. In the District, we track storms, consult with the National Weather Service and participate in conference calls. The goal is to make a decision by 5 a.m. so families can plan. Many students in the District rely on buses for their commutes, and if buses can’t operate safely, schools probably close. Closing is the last resort.

The district is hiring! We are looking for substitutes in all areas: teachers, kitchen staff, paraprofessionals, clean-ers or custodians. This is a great opportunity to work with the children of your community. For bus drivers, we need driv-ers for our extra-curricular events and substitutes for our daily bus routes.

If you have an interest in work-ing with the students/children please consider becoming a substitute of any kind in the Lake Superior School District please contact the district of-fice, 218-834-8201 x 8216.Thank you for supporting the students of Lake Superior School District.

If you have any questions, sug-gestions or concerns regard-ing the schools or the district please contact the Lake Su-perior School District office at 218-834-8201 or by email at [email protected].

NOTES FROM THE NURSES’ OFFICE

Because this is the last edition of Good News before August here are a few reminders for the summer:» Summer time is a great opportunity for immunizations, well child checkups and sports physicals. Sports physicals are due every three years» Immunizations or required documentation of exemption, either medical or conscientious objection, must be completed prior to starting the school year. Students who transfer mid-year have 30 days to submit documentation. Use the link below to find the immunization schedules for Preschool through 12th grade.https://www.health.state.mn.us/people/immunize/basics/readykidswhento.pdf » Over the summer, be sure to obtain any necessary signatures for medications that will be given at school either on a daily basis or as needed. This includes insulin orders, asthma action plans and epipen orders. The medication form can be found on the district website under the s e r v i c e s t a b> N u r s e s O f f i c e > F o r m s a n d r e s o u r c e s f o r p a r e n t s» Finally, if your child requires accommodations during the school day due to a medical concern that is either short term or longer, please contact your school nurse directly. Thank you!

At school we are faced with the reality every day that children are becoming addicted to nicotine at alarming rates and at younger ages than we could have imagined. Administration and staff spend a good part of their day trying to combat this growing public health concern. We have seen firsthand the harm that e-cigarette use can cause including nicotine overdose. We want you to be aware so you can best help your child avoid or stop this before it becomes a habit.» For the first time since 2000, overall youth tobacco use has increased in Minnesota. This is very likely due to e-cigarette use.» One in five high school students use e-cigarettes, a nearly 50 percent increase since 2014. Minnesota Department of Health 10/2019. » Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, one of the most addictive substances on the planet. » E-cigarettes, once thought to be a good alternative to traditional cigarettes and a way to stop smoking, can and do cause addiction to nicotine.» A young person’s brain is literally primed for addiction with exposure to nicotine.

» We know students as young as 6th grade and possibly younger are using these products.» There are other serious physical consequences to inhaling the vapor produced by e-cigarettes just as there are with traditional cigarettes. You’ve seen the news.» Tobacco manufacturers market e-cigarettes in order to regain the lost revenue from the decrease in traditional cigarette sales.» E-cigarettes are marketed directly to children using brightly colored packaging and flavors that youth will like.» T21 laws prohibit tobacco sales, including e-cigarettes, to anyone under the age of 21 which can decrease by 25% the rate of adolescent use of e-cigarettes.» We know from the Minnesota Student Survey and from our students directly that they can and do buy these products from older students who purchase them at local vendors. » T21 laws will help prevent these devices from getting in the hands of even younger people.» Several students in our school have expressed a desire to be free from nicotine addiction.» We are looking for new ways to address youth tobacco use and cessation by targeting ‘quit smoking’ tools to young people.

For more information about e-cigarettes and smoking cessation tools and resources:https://www.health.state.mn.us/communities/tobacco/ecigarettes/health.html https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/index.htmlhttps://www.quitplan.com/ https://www.lung.org/

If you have questions or concerns about this or any health-related issue, we’re here to help. As always, if there is a change in your child’s health that will have an impact during their school day, please let us know so we can best plan for your child’s care while at school and notify teachers of any modifications needed. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

COUNSELOR CORNER GENERAL REMINDERSTHHS REGISTRATION FOR 2020-2021Believe it or not, the registration process for the 2019-2020 school year is approaching!! Students entering grades 9-12 will be receiving information about high school registration in February. The registration conference date has yet to be determined. As decisions regarding courses are very important both to students’ progress towards graduation and their futures after high school, the district highly encourages parent involvement in the registration process. Also, it is important that students carefully consider their registration choices as changes to class schedules are very limited after spring registration. Please watch for the date for the registration conference and plan on attending.

WKHS REGISTRATION 2020-2021In February, all 7-11 grade students will be given a registration packet along with a scheduling form. Once a schedule is created, the student will take the registration form home for parents/guardians to review and sign. The student will return to school with the form, register online, and enter his or her schedule for the next school year. More information will be made available closer to the registration date.

ALL PARENTSWe are approaching the end of Semester I and it is very important that students complete all their classroom assignments/projects and study for their exams, so that they earn passing grades in all of their classes. If your student is in jeopardy of failing a class, or you have any concerns about their academic progress, you should contact their teacher(s) and/or the Guidance Office immediately. All of the teacher contact information is available on the school website at www.isd381.org. You may also call the main high school office at THHS, 834-8201 ext. 8201; or KHS, 226-4437, ext. 8102 if you need assistance contacting a teacher.

PARENT PORTALMany of you already access the Parent Portal, which is a great way for you and your student to stay current on academic progress. We encourage any of you who have not accessed the Parent Portal to email either Amy Nelson [email protected], KHS or Kris Lee at [email protected], THHS to receive your initial password and instructions for accessing the Parent Portal.

ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS! It is particularly important that senior students pass all of their classes this year. If a student does fail a Semester I class, they should see Ms. Eliason in the THHS Guidance Office, 834-8201 ext. 8206, or Tami Duke at KHS, 226-4437, ext. 8134 IMMEDIATELY to discuss ways to make up credit.Students should continue to check their school email as well as listen to daily announcements for scholarship information and deadlines. There will be many deadlines in the coming months and it is important that students follow instructions on filling out applications and returning forms. In addition, there are links on both the Two Harbors and William Kelley “Counselors Corner- Resources for Students in Grades 10-12” tab with scholarship information and deadlines. As we receive new information, we add it to these links, as well. Finally, students and parents are reminded that in order for students to participate in the graduation ceremonies, ALL required coursework for graduation must be successfully completed by the last day of classes for seniors.

TEST DATESOn Tuesday, March 24th, Juniors will have the opportunity to take one of the following tests: ACT, Accuplacer or ASVAB. A letter was sent home describing each of these assessments. During February, students will again be reminded of the test details and asked to select which test they would like to take on March 24th. The Accuplacer and ASVAB are free of charge, however, the ACT does have a fee, which is no longer being paid by the state. Students interested in taking the ACT, but who may have financial difficulty with the fee, should see the Guidance Counselor or an Administrator for possible options. Students and parents can find test information in the Guidance Office and on the Two Harbors and William Kelley “Counselors Corner-Resources for Students in Grades 10-12” test preparation and resources tab. Juniors, please use the resources/links of the website listed above to help prepare you for these important tests! Please do not hesitate to contact the Guidance Office with further questions.

KEEPING THE CABIN IN THE FAMILYWe have all heard the scenarios: a cabin that once produced wonderful family memories causes a rift among the children in the next generation, or a family is forced to sell the family cabin due to in-ability to agree upon use and maintenance and/or lack of funds to maintain the cabin. If you have a family cabin (or “cottage” or vacation home), have you and your family given any thought to wheth-er the property should be retained by the next generation and if so, how to best accomplish that result? If your goal is to transfer the cabin property to the next generation, advance planning is essen-tial.  Grand Marais attorney, Ruthanne Hedstrom Vos with Mathison & Vos, PLLC, will address the advantages and disadvantages of various options for transferring ownership of the family cabin and will provide handouts to help facilitate your fami-ly’s discussion and planning. Register by 3/25.  Attorney, Ruthanne Hedstrom Vos 4/2/20 | Thursday, 6:30 - 8:00 PM THHS - Computer Lab 1109/Media Center Tuition, $7/person or $11/couple

RESTORATIVE YOGARestorative yoga is a practice that is all about slow-ing down and opening up your body through pas-sive stretching. Unlike a typical yoga class, where your muscles are used to hold different poses and postures, in restorative yoga the postures are held for a longer duration (3-5 minutes) using props such as blocks, bolsters and blankets. The use of props and the extended hold of the poses allows your body to deeply relax which will increase flex-ibility & balance.  Restorative yoga also stills the mind, improves the bodies capacity to heal, boosts the immune system and improves your over all mood. This yoga class will be very relaxing and slow moving. What to bring: comfortable clothes, yoga mat, one or two blankets, yoga bolster or a firm pil-low, yoga blocks, water bottle. Yoga blocks will be provided if needed.  No class 4/8. Register by 2/27.
