Dynamically Scaled Flight Research Steve Meyer Mentor: Dr. Hermann Fasel Kuiper Space Sciences Building Room 312 April 17, 2010 Project Scope Design and build a 1/3 dynamically scaled model of the Cirrus SR-22 general aviation airplane to be used in a toolbox of scaled flight research. Individual Contributions Focused on the mechanical aspects of the project Included CAD drafting and material testing Primary responsibility was designing the landing gear and brakes Also contributed to aircraft construction CAD Modeling Landing Gear Design Several materials were investigated, including steel, aluminum, and fiberglass Finite element methods were used to determine best choice Fiberglass SR-22 uses fiberglass main gear Strong and light Mold was difficult and expensive to produce Spring Steel Relatively inexpensive Easy to manufacture Very strong even considering weight Excellent fatigue properties Construction Construction is being performed at BAE Systems Aircraft composed almost entirely of fiberglass and carbon fiber Unfortunately, cameras are not allowed, so no photos Looking Ahead Design has been finished and construction is nearing completion Revisions are still being made, but should be flight ready this summer Research will provide valuable information for the NASA Personal Aerial Vehicle program Thank You
