Dear Mr. Shoe,

I am writing in reply to the ad seeking to fill the sales associate employment position at your shoe sales company.

I have substantial qualities to offer to you and your company. I am a current member of my high school’s yearbook staff. Yearbook has taught me how to handle constructive critisicm, how to work with different types of people and how to be friendly and engage people I do not know. Yearbook has also taught me the importance of deadlines and how to cooperate with a team.

I am a very consistent, hard working young woman always looking for an opportunity to learn and become more successful. I strive best when I am pushed by those around me. I am looking to work for an employer that will recognize my talents and push me to work harder.

I am currently a nanny for two different families and have volunteered with my church and in the Dominican Republic. I am an active member in my school’s Always Wear Your Seatbelt Club and I belong to the Best Buddies’ Club.

Attached is my resume and business card, although these illustrate my experience well, I feel a personal interview would better deomonstrate my abilities. I would like to thank you for considering me for the position and I will follow up with a phone call some time in the next week.

Respectfully,

Chandler M. Dye

PERSONAL ESSAYAfter this year journalism has a new meaning to me entirely. When I think about what it means it to me, I think of family. I think of Burke and how she has impacted my life so positively. I think of teamwork, and how without it, no publication would get anywhere. I think of how important it is to document what goes on in people’s lives. My journalism career started off when I was really young, I always felt the need to write everything down and still do. To be honest, I saw Overboard with Goldie Hawn when I was seven and since then I have been terrified of losing my memory. I started imagining myself life Goldie Hawn, not being able to remember anything and that scared me. So I started writing down the important details of my life in case I ever forgot them. My sister also influenced me to be involved in journalism; all four years of highschool she was on Hilights staff. She would come home talking about stories she had to write and things she got to do and I always thought it was so neat. But nothing she said compared to when she would bring the paper home and make us look through every page, I wanted the kind of pride she had in her work in my own. I want to major in communications because of my journalism classes with Burke. I’ve found that documenting what goes on is a really important job, and it can be really cool. I want to do communications more than journalism because I feel like they’re a lot alike aside from communications being a more broad major.

SELF-ANALYTICAL EVALUATION

It’s safe to say I learned something new everyday of this course. I learned more about how to use Photoshop and what to do to have a picture in its best quality. I learned how important it is to meet deadlines. Meeting deadlines isn’t just for you and it isn’t just for the publication in which you are working for; it’s for both. Late work can cost a lot of money and a lot of stress on not only you but your editors/adviser. I was so happy that I met every deadline this year. One of the big things I learned was how to work with people I can’t stand. I had a lot of trouble with a staffer this year and there were so many times I just wanted to bite her head off but had to contain myself. There were also times when I forced to work with her, to help her or ask for help. Learning how to be professional and cordial even when you loathe someone is such a good skill to have and I really got to work on it this year. I learned how to work on a team and how important every member is to the team. We all need each other and it’s a really cool dynamic we reach working on this book together. I was so nervous selling my ads to strangers and trying to be as professional as I could about it. I’m SO glad I got the experience of meeting new people and trying to sell them something. I have so much more confidence than I did when I first started and I think having those people skills is awesome for both future jobs and everyday life. There isn’t a single thing that I’ve listed that I won’t be able to use everyday of my future. I love how much this class has taught me, in and out of the classroom.

REFLECTION ONEMy first deadline this year I split with someone that was a returner. This was such a blessing because she was able to coach me and guide me every step of our page. Second deadline I was on my own, my very first page to myself. I was horrified. I think deadline two is my most significant piece of work for a lot of reasons. It was the first story that I wrote alone, it was the first time I had to go to sport events to take pictures and it was the first time the whole thing was on me. The whole page was difficult to complete but I’m in love with the finished product. I hated having to go through hundreds of cheerleading pictures and feeling like none of them were good enough to go on my page. Then finally finding one I liked and having an editor tell me they didn’t like it. It was so frustrating but so strange because I loved the challenge. Sehar had to sit with me one class period to make sure I finished my body copy, we sat together and laughed and worked and ate and I enjoyed it so much. I had never had so much fun doing something for school. The pictures on this page are probably what changed the most. I would pick one and someone would say they loved it and another would tell me to pull it. I learned so much having a page on my own and I am so obsessed with how it came out. I don’t really have a favorite part of this page. I was going to say copy because I love the quotes I got and the angle but then I think about the dominant photo and how much attention it draws.

REFLECTION TWOThe presentations page...I still think of it and want to scream. This page probably evolved the least out of all of my pages this year and that’s why I think it could still use work. My mom has always told me, “You’re just the kind of person that if your heart isn’t in it, you have a lot of trouble doing it.” That showed to be so true during the creation of this page. I couldn’t care less about presentations and how they enhance a class or if students are wussies about it or not. Not caring about what I was writing about proved to be the most challenging about this page. If I could redo this page, I would have started it earlier. None of the pictures on this page are mine own, which bothers me because I’m responsible for them. I would have found out when presentations were going on before the deadline started and gone to the classrooms instead of sifting through 30 photodays. Overall, I don’t think this page is bad. I just wish there was a way I could’ve made it more interesting. I’m afraid no one will read it because it wasn’t my absolute best work. I thought it was a boring topic so in a way I gave every other person reason to think so too, and who wants to read a boring story?

REFLECTION THREE10-7emily_dye; I love this picture. It has such good depth of field, I can’t even believe I took it. Emily’s hands are blurry which I love because it shows action but they aren’t so blurry that you can’t tell she’s about to clap. The emotion in her face really makes the picture, she looks so excited. This picture is like the definition of a cheerleader. This picture also has rule of thirds, Emily isn’t’ centered at all. I just think it’s overall a really neat picture and I’m really glad I had the opportunity to shoot it.

football10-7_MACY; I think this picture is so cool and it has several composition elements. It shows a center of visual interest on Ziglar and he has emotion. He’s so serious and solemn but you can see the excitement in the players behind him. This picture also has repetition because the players are standing in a line and most of them have their helmets in the air. It kind of shows rule of thirds because Ziglar isn’t dead center. The depth of field is my favorite part. The players are so blurry yet so visible but the main focus is definitely on the coach which I think is really cool. The frame of the picture is filled completely which is also a nice element of the photo.

varsitycheer10-27_macydye; One of my favorites. I love this picture so much. It looks like a magazine picture. The center of visual interest is obviously Brooke and Brad, the new homecoming king and queen. The pictures fills the frame, showing the fireworks and even some and members aligned. I just think this picture really had to be taken at the perfect moment to get their smiles and the fireworks when I did. I was on the ground when I took it so the camera is kind of pointing up toward them which is also a cool part of the picture. I just love it, I think it’s so beautiful.

REFLECTION FOURI was an asset to the 2011-2012 Legend and Hi-Lights.org staff by writing stories, going to as many events as I could to take pictures, meeting every deadline and helping others when I could. Yearbook means so much to me so I always tried my hardest. I want people to see my pages in the book and think they’re awesome. On the web I tried to write stories and post pictures that my peers would find interesting. Trying to get people to go to the website has proven to be a difficult task so if someone does get on, I want the stories and pictures to catch their attention. That was my main focus for everything in mass media, trying to attract attention. I was so happy to hear a lacrosse player ask how he could get the pictures off the web, it made for feel like I was doing something for the publication. The staff means so much to me and so do both publications, I always tried my hardest.

REFLECTION FIVEProblems and hardships... Yikes. I had a problem with someone on yearbook staff for the majority of the year. It was SO hard to be in the same room as them everyday because they are obnoxious and there is no possible way to ignore them. Sometimes I honestly felt like I was going to explode and make a scene but I never did because through all of the animosity I have for them, I learned how to have zen. I learned the best way for me to cope in a situation like that, and I learned it’ll be rare when I work in the real world to like everyone I have to deal with. The only other problem I had was in mass media. I’m all for constructive criticism, as long as it’s CONSTRUCTIVE. I wrote two stories and without so much as why, they were handed back to me by someone and they said, “Rewrite both of these.” I was kind of stunned and pretty upset but I figured they were right so I rewrote both of the stories. I handed them in and was told yet again to rewrite them. I felt like I was going to cry because my work generally means a lot to me and I’d never turn something in if I thought I was wasting someone’s time by giving it to them. At this point I was so distraught that I had both of my EIC’s from yearbook read the stories, one of them said she couldn’t have done it better herself and another sat for a whole class period with me trying to tweak it into what my grader wanted. After talking to the grader again, I felt as though I couldn’t handle it anymore. So I sent both stories to my adviser, Burke, and I’m so glad I did. She is the best grader because she writes everything down she doesn’t like so specifically and also writes, “Love this!” and other positive feedback on your paper. I was so relieved. If I had go through again, I would have sent it to Burke sooner. I stressed about it way too long and I actually value Burke’s opinion.

REFLECTION SIXFor the mid-term I wrote about how this year has been my hardest academically. I wrote that I needed to manage my time better and give every class the attention it needs. I really think I improved with that. I tried to figure out how I could do that, and do it with less stress. So, I started putting my thoughts into two categories; things I can change and things I can’t. This has helped me keep stress to a minimum so I can focus more on the task at hand. I got better at focusing on just yearbook when I needed to, I taught myself how to put on blinders to everything else which I’m really grateful for.

REFLECTION SEVENY1: I chose my sexting story (page 44) for Y1, Feature writing: Student life. I love this story because the topic is a real issue on campus. It’s sad that finding people to interview wasn’t really hard for this story. I think it’s well written because it goes into depth about issue while getting four different students’ stories. I think this is one of the most attention grabbing stories in the book. I love it.

Y3: I chose my cheer story (page 168) for Sports feature writing because it was one of my best stories. When the book came out one of the cheerleaders came up to me and told me how they love the story and thanked me for writing it so well. I was so excited someone thought I did well portraying how the cheer competition goes and how thrilling it was for cheerleading to become a sport.

Y15: I chose this picture of Darby Thomas cheering (page 168) for sports action photo because you can see action in her face, her arms and behind her. I think this picture is really neat because of the facial expression Darby has. She looks so spirited. You can tell she’s into what she’s doing and trying to the crowd excited and that’s the point of the picture.
