ELISAVA WORKSHOP 17-20 DECEMBER 2014the on land team
THE PLANdye [daɪ]
► noun a natural or synthetic substance used to colour something.► verb dyes, dyeing, dyed(tr) to impart a colour to something, such as fabric or garment by the applica-
tion of a dye; to change color, often in an undesired manner.
-PHRASES► Call no man happy till he dyes. (American proverb)
► Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we dye. (Bible, Ecclesiastes 8:15)
► To dye, to sleep, maybe to dream. (W.Shakespeare, Hamlet 3,1)
► Live and let dye. (I.Fleming, James Bond 007)
In other words: we’re going to take fabrics/garments/stuff, to wrinkle/manipu-
late/tie them, and to dye/colour/bleach in order to change/tranform/create a new
aspect/hue/texture.
THE INSPIRATION
From Yves Klein and his works on co lours (expecially blue), including monochromes
and action painting, to traditional dyeing techniques such as Japanese Shibori,
Indonesian Batik, African Tie&Dye
The customization of the wardrobe through dyeing, undyeing and bleaching, has always been a
characteristic of all the alternative, protest, revolutionary, musical movements of the last
40 years. Hippie’s rainbow tie&dye robes, punk bleached and ripped-off tee-shirts, grunge over-
dyed lumberjack shirts are just some examples and sources of ideas.
THE ACTIONTie, clip, dye, make knots, use bleach, put on colour, take off colour.
Use thread, tape, strings, clamps, knots, rope, glue, wax, to avoid the penetra-
tion of dyeing. Take the fabric and stretch it, wrinkle it, twist it, wrap it
up, roll it up.
Prepare the dyeing with water, salt and the magic powders of indigo blue, inter-
national klein blue, navy blue, electric blue.
Immerse in hot water, in cold water, in a bucket, in a bowl, in a basin, in the
washing machine. Remove, mix, shuffle, blend, shake.
Et voilà!
THE OUTPUTHere they are! Some of the sixtyfour garments we dyed in the 2012 Elisava
Creative Marathon.
THE SHOW
Converting Elisava’s internal patio in a neapoletan vicolo, like those in Ed-
uardo de Filippo, Totó and Anna Magnani movies.
