DX Fanzine No. 53 – January 2018 DX Fanzine, an electronic newsletter which was originally edited in 1999/2000, brings together tips and news as

contributed by individual DXers or ascertained from different sources. We are interested in any change in

frequencies, times, language-services, transmitters, programme contents, phone and fax-numbers, electronic

and postal address, station personnel. The purpose of DX Fanzine, which doesn’t pretend to be in competition

with any other electronic DX newsletter, is to provide timely and topical news and information to shortwave

enthusiasts worldwide. It is available on the web at www.dxfanzine.com and updated as soon as loggings, DX

news, frequency updates, as well as, QSL notes are received from any SWL around the world.

Although the primary platform for delivery of DX FANZINE information remains its web site, it is turned into a

pdf file, (where you can see the final version of it with loggings and information, just as they appear online), a

couple of days after the end of each month and sent out FREE to anyone who has subscribed. The current as well

as the previous editions of DX Fanzine (including those of years 1999/2000!) can be accessed from its home page

and are there almost indefinitely.

SAD NEWS: BARRY STEPHENS (ALIAS TOM TAYLOR) OF EUROPEAN MUSIC RADIO FAME HAS PASSED AWAY.

With great sadness we report the death of European Music Radio's founder and short wave legend Tom Taylor, to many also known as Barry Stephens. For many dedicated SW free radio enthusiasts, E.M.R. was thé station in the late 1970s and 1980. As from 1980 onwards E.M.R. and FRS became sister stations. Within a few days a Memorial with some personal memories will be put on the FRS site. We will inform you via mail when it will be on-line.All of us at FRS are shocked by Tom's death. He indeed was a short wave legend. May he rest in peace. Ed: I am deeply sorry to leran of the death of Tom and express my sincere condolonces to the family and his friends. Definitely not QSB. Surprised to hear an anmnt at 2206 in which a M seemed to ment. "...free radio...". Too much Flight 93 TIS QRM to copy more. Song by The Carpenters at 2209 followed by a EST TC and song anmnt at 2210. 2218 another song anmnt and TC as "...going home time is 5:18". So definitely live. All but 1 song changeover was down in the mud. Finally went off at 2300:40. (Valko 29 Jan.) 6973 PIRATE (ARGENTINA) Lupo R. Found w/LA and Tango mx again from 0223. 0231, 0234, 0244 same W anncr as hrd before, but too weak to copy. Still going at 0246 t/out. (Valko 30 Jan.) 6540.79 PIRATE? Weak signal w/Rock music w/an occasional Metal and Punk song from 0804 t/in. Short apparent song anmnts by M in (non-UK) EG at 0810 and 0820. Too weak to copy. Only recognized a remake of "Green Tambourine" at 0844 and went off suddenly at 0847:03. Was also getting audio on web rx in Uniontown PA, Alberta Canada, Miami, FL, and Warrenton VA, the latter being the best. Also had the signal w/out any audio in Washington state, and Michigan, and I believe 2 receivers in the UK. Thought at first it might be a EuroPirate, but it shouldn’t have been hrd w/audio as far west as Alberta. Then thought a possible spur, but no //’s found anywhere. Only possibilities are a NA Pirate or harmonic of 1090. If a NA Pirate, is a strange time/day for one. Not hrd the next morning. Almost certain I could have IDed it if not for the CODAR. First hrd here on the 12th. (Valko 14-15 Jan.) 5055 AUSTRALIA 4KZ (pres.) 1259-1310 getting bits of M tlk a few times and mx on very short peaks of a no more than 1.5 seconds. Fading. (Valko 10 Jan.) 6035 BHUTAN BBS Surprised to find it on this morning mixing w/Yunnan at 1200 (Yunnan in usual mx and BBS w/tlk by M), then clear of Yunnan once it went off at 1201:43. 1202 indigenous mx briefly, then soft-spoken M w/ apparent nx. More lcl mx on stringed instru. at 1213, M once again, and lcl string mx cont. at 1216 for abt 45 sec. then diff. deep-voice M anncr to 1218. Whenever the signal is up in this area, it’s horrendously distorted. Had to use FM mode to get any kind of readable audio. Nothing else worked. And even with the FM mode, it was unusable most of the time. At 1125:38, it suddenly jumped back down to 6009.90 and the audio was perfectly fine. End of song then another canned anmnt by W, but the signal there went off at 1126:24 while the W was speaking. (Valko 11 January) 7200 MYANMAR Myanmar R. Poor signal at 1134 w/Asian Pop-like mx, before changing the BOG antenna direction, then better at 1143 w/tlk by W. Decent signal at 1200 w/M and W pgm hosts. W host w/ment of Myanmar and then bit of EG words counting off apparent important points once mentioning “Three, historically…abnormal behavior…”. A NEW EDITION OF "QSL.WINDOW" IS NOW AVAILABLE

Rudolf Grimm is pleased to announce the release of a new edition of "QSL.window" which lists E-mail and postal addresses used successfully in obtaining a verification (card, letter or eQSL) from radio stations around the world which acknowledged reception reports. The contents are not taken from other lists of addresses but are the result of a real contact with each station. Each address listed is followed by a code made of two letters and four numbers which indicates who received the answer from the station and when (month and year). Although some information is missing (In the past I made a lot of efforts in finding E-mail addresses that work and now it is my intention to provide Rudolf with the results of my research), this publication offers a lot of useful and quite often not easy to find E-mail addresses useful for obtaining a verification. And, if that is not enough, it is absolutely free of charge. QSL.window is a must-have for those of us who still collect QSL, both printed or electronic, verifications. I think there is none better! Tom’s EMR program will also be repeated at various other times on 846 kHz during the week starting Feb. 5, 2018, from 7 PM until 01 AM Central European Time on 846 kHz to Southern Europe, and available via live streaming. (Alfredo Cotroneo, IRRS/NEXUS-IBA in Milan, via Mauno Ritola) ITALY (PUGLIA) Today it's not easy to obtain a QSL verification from RAI, the public radio and TV service of Italy. Shortwave broadcasts were dropped a number of years ago as well as most of its medium wave transmitters. Despite this, RAI has still 13 medium wave transmitters in operation. One of those is located in Foggia, in the north part of Puglia, the region of Italy, also known as Apulia, which occupies the extreme south-eastern tip of the country. Its power is only 5 kW and, as any medium wave transmitter of RAI, it carries programmes from Radio 1 network which also includes regional segments. The regional programmes of Puglia (The Roughly speaking, the heel of Italy!) which consist of local news, are on the air as follows: 0618-0630 (Monday to Saturday), 1110-1115 (Sunday), 1730-1735 (Monday to Friday). Please note that those UTC times are one hour earlier in April-October when DST (Daylight Saving Time or Summer Time) is in force in Italy. The big news is that reports on reception of RAI on the medium wave frequency of 1431 kHz from Foggia are now verified with a full data "QSL" letter. (Unfortunately QSL cards are unavailable).
