    REGNET PROGRAM REVIEW 2001-2006

    KATHRYN DWAN

    Context statement: June 2006

Dr Kathryn Dwan is an early career academic who moved to RegNet from theUniversity of Queensland in 2005. She is an interdisciplinary scholar, working acrossthe disciplines of sociology, medicine and public policy. With Emeritus ProfessorJohn Western, she has also made a very important contribution to the field of socialinequality with the publication of "Patterns of Social Inequality" in the CambridgeHandbook of Social Sciences in Australia.

The four papers presented for review represent work in regulation and governance.Taken together they demonstrate Dwan's facility with both qualitative and

quantitative research methods, her capacity to work alone and with others, and herability to publish internationally and in sources which reach practitioners. Thisensures that her contribution is of relevance beyond academia. For instance, thearticle published in Australian Family Physician in 2005 prompted medical readers tocontact Dwan personally, appreciating the quality of her analysis and her handling ofsensitive material. This work has been cited in presentations by medicalpractitioners. In further support of the relevance and reach of her work, Dwan'sdoctoral research on communication between doctors and bureaucrats was thesubject of an article in Medical Observer (1 April 2005), a weekly magazine sent toevery Australian doctor.
