Each night since the begin-ning of creation, the mysteri-ous sky has ceaselesslyrevealed billions of stars.People of the past createdtall tales and myths toexplain the great mysterythat is the night sky.

The MSUM RegionalScience Center is taking aneducational look at theatmosphere through the pro-duction “Bear Tales.”

“The program helps edu-cate people about the nightsky and the wonderful uni-verse that we live in,” plane-tarium coordinator DaveWeinrich said.

“Bear Tales,” produced byJoe Hopkin’s Productions, isdesigned primarily for chil-dren, but appeals to all ages.The program places the

audience on a camping tripwith a family and theirgrandfather. Looking up atthe countless stars, grandfa-ther begins to tell the mythsof the stars.

Ten-year-old Lindsey Gresssaid her favorite part of theshow was grandfather’sstory of the bears.

While Gress was enjoyingthe tall tales, she also“learned where the planetsare and that the stars arebrightest in the winter,” shesaid.

The MSUM planetariumpresents programs through-out the year to provide peo-ple in the area with a gener-al knowledge of the stars.“Bear Tales” is showingSundays at 2 p.m. andMondays at 7 p.m., throughMarch 10.

A bomb threat broughtCampus Security andMoorhead police in to investi-gate Owens at 10:15 Tuesdaymorning.

A student walking intoOwens found an envelope on

the sidewalk addressed to theinformation office. Shebrought it to Kathy Anstadt inthe records office. Anstadtthen opened it and directedthe handwritten threat toJohn Tandberg, registrar.Tandberg turned the letterover to Campus Security.

The letter said Owens was

going to be bombed at 1 p.m.,along with two other unidenti-fied places on campus.

While the search was inprogress, Dean Palmer of thephysical plant sent an e-mailto all staff members in Owensand anyone entering thebuilding to turn off cellphones and radios to avoid

setting off a device with otherelectronics.

This was the only notificationany faculty received about thesituation, but the message didnot mention the reason for theban, which lasted about 30minutes while the police andCampus Security did a walk-through of the building.

“There are two schools ofthought. One is people need toknow everything. In security,we think there’s some stuffyou do put out and other stuffyou don’t,” said Mike Pehler,director of Campus Security.

In an effort to unify andidentify, Minnesota StateColleges and Universitiespassed a policy last April inwhich its institutions mustadd “a member of theMinnesota State Colleges andUniversities system” to univer-sity materials.

Linda Kohl, associate vicechancellor for public affairs,said the idea behind thechange is for the public tounderstand which institutionsare part of MnSCU.

“The fear was that if the leg-islature doesn’t know a cer-tain institution is part of oursystem, they’d be less likely to

give us the money we need inour funding request,” Kohlsaid. “[We wanted to] helpbuild that awareness so that,when it comes to budget time,these legislators understandthat all of the colleges anduniversities are part of thiswonderful system.”

Kohl named Central LakesCollege as an example of aninstitution that presents diffi-culty in knowing its part of asystem. She said the board oftrustees adopted a policy sev-eral years ago that said anyinstitution changing its namemust include Minnesota StateCollege or Minnesota StateUniversity, but the policy wasunpopular.

“Several presidents felt aneed to change the name, justnot to that name,” Kohl said.“So we’ve given presidentssome more flexibility. If theycould just add a brief explana-tion that their college or uni-versity is part of MnSCU, they

could pick the name theywanted.”

Kohl said the next step wasto agree on one tagline for allof the institutions to use.Once “a member of theMinnesota State Colleges andUniversities system” wasadopted, guidelines were alsoput in place regarding exter-nal distribution and audience.

“It shouldn’t cost any money.We’re not asking anybody todestroy materials they alreadyhave,” Kohl said. “Just thenext time you print, add thetagline.”

She said many of the MnSCUschools are excited about thechange and the tagline isalready appearing on publica-tions.

“People are recognizing theimportance of having peopleunderstand this connection,”Kohl said. “We’re going to bereasonable on this and have

WAHPETON, N.D. — Senior SusanAndersen dropped out of school and“packed everything green” in prepara-tion to serve her country.

The vocal performance major andmember of the 142nd unit of theNational Guard is on her way to FortCarson, Colo., for training. The unit’snext destination is unknown.

Andersen is one of several MSUM stu-dents and community members acti-vated last week. Although she’s ner-vous because it’s her first time beingactivated, Andersen has a positive atti-tude.

“I’m excited to look like a pickle for ayear,” Andersen said.

She joined the guard in September1999 for financial benefits for college.

Her dad, Leon, was also a member ofthe 142nd unit but recently retired. Heserved in Kosovo when the unit wasdeployed three years ago.

Elementary education major JessieLayton dropped all his classes Jan. 16— the last day of the drop/add period.

The Watertown,S.D., nativerecently trans-ferred to the142nd unit.

Layton said hisfamily andfriends are

encouraging and remind him that serv-ing in the military is a noble cause.

As members of the NationalGuard left Fargo-Moorhead thisweek, Doug and Jane Giedtrecalled 12 years earlier whenthey too were shipped out to sup-port a war in the Middle East.

Jane, an MSUM nursing profes-sor, said she and her husbandjoined the Army Reserve in 1972after prior years of military service.

“After we got married, we decid-ed that we would go back into themilitary in an inactive service,”Jane said. “We had been marriedtwo years and knew what the mil-itary experience was like.”

Doug added, “The Vietnam Warwas over and the possibilities ofwar at that time were limited. Itwas a way to supplement ourincome and still service our coun-try. The benefits of the militaryare quite substantial.”

The Giedts, now retired from theArmy Reserve, said being involvedwith the reserve meant constanttraining and community service.

Members of theArmy Reservelearned skills in aspecialty, as wellas basic militaryskills like firingweapons, militaryprotocol andphysical fitness.

But afterThanksgiving in1990, the Giedtsreceived a callsaying their rolewas about tochange. As tensions in thePersian Gulf mounted, the couplefound themselves deployed toFort McCoy in Wisconsin to beginservice to their country. Thisinvolved leaving their three chil-dren behind.

“They were pretty well-informedabout the possibilities,” Janesaid. “Even as they were growingup, they knew what it was about.They played with all of our stuffand we talked about it a lot.”

Doug said the couple tried toupdate their children about what

would happen ifthey were activat-ed.

“We had ourplans prettymuch in placewhat we’d do withour children if wewere to go,” Dougsaid. “My sisterand brother-in-law were theirguardians andhappy to havethem when we

were deployed.”The Giedts said fear didn’t play

a role in their journey, as theywould spend their days workingin a hospital in Abu Dhabi andhad previous military experience.

As chief nurse, Jane said shehad to leave a few days beforeher husband, whose plane wasthe last to land before the bomb-ing began.

Doug said, “We were in uniform,but were later converted to civil-ian clothes. They didn’t want usto look like the military. We weregoing to be in a civilian locationtaking care of their patients. Sowe all got clothes that [made us]look like UPS delivery guys.”

Jane said there was hospitalstaff from 42 countries to workwith. They all spoke English, yetthe Giedts said they had toadjust to the different healthcare system.

“Our primary purpose when wegot there was to integrate andwork with the staff and not tocause any type of friction,” Dougsaid. “They were all very good towork with ... but we didn’t want topush their system.”

Jane said there were few casu-alties for U.S. soldiers and mostof their work involved treatingpeople for typical ailments, suchas the flu, broken bones andheart problems.

“All of the rooms are privaterooms, but there are two beds:one for the patient and one for afamily member,” Jane said.

“The family provides most of the

care. A lot of them were Muslim ordesert people who wouldn’t eatcertain things or do certainthings. They could be consistentwith what their beliefs and prac-tices were.”

The Giedts lived in a tent atfirst, but were relieved to moveinto more permanent living quar-ters as the temperatures rose.

“If you go into March, it getsvery, very hot,” Doug said. “That’swhy there’s all this pressureabout deadlines.”

Jane said there was a possibili-ty she and her husband would beseparated, but it wasn’t high.Doug said this is because of theimportance of unity.

“They found that, in previouswars, units that train togetherhave a tendency to [do better],” hesaid. “They have their own sup-port groups.”

After three months overseas, theGiedts were allowed to comehome March 17, 1991. Janeretired from the Reserve in 1994

and Doug followed in 1995. Even after their service to their

country, Doug said the trueheroes are the people back homewho remain supportive.

He said the only fear he had wasof the initial unknown.

“When you get your mission andyou know things are being set up,you become much more comfort-able,” Doug said.

Jane said the best way for mili-tary men and women to survive isto keep their values and reach outto fellow members.

“If you stick to yourself, it’s easyto get depressed about what’sgoing on and being separatedfrom your family and friends canreally weigh on you,” Jane said.

“You have to view this as a tem-porary situation and seek one ortwo people who are going to begood, solid support.”

I am writing to ask you topublish this letter inresponse to the letter that aMr. Pete Kleckner, MSUMsophomore, wrote in the latestissue of The Advocate. His letterissued a “recommendation” topeople in charge of the budgetthis year to cut money from theathletic programs here at MSUM.I am here to tell you that Mr. PeteKleckner obviously hasn’t donehis research on athletic programsat MSUM and is basically run-ning off at the mouth about anarea in which he has no exper-tise.

Mr. Kleckner starts his “recom-mendation” by reporting gradua-tion statistics from the Universityof Oklahoma, yet says nothing ofthe graduation stats of our stu-dent athletes at this school,which, from my experience on thefootball team, are some of the topin our conference. He also statesthat our coaches receive “kick-backs” from athletic apparel com-panies, by making all of our ath-letes wear a particular brand ofshoe or uniform. I’ll also disagreewith this statement. Our coachesreceive no kickbacks, and wedon’t even wear all of the sameshoes! Come to one of our games,Pete, and take a look at our feet,you’ll see Nike, Adidas, even

Reebok! However, the statements that

make me even more angry aboutMr. Kleckner’s poorly researchedand highly opinionated “recom-mendation” are the personalshots that he takes at studentathletes themselves. How dare hesuggest that all of our GPAs andgrades be published publicly.?Who are you to say, PeteKleckner, that you are to be thejudge of an athlete’s academicperformance, when you obviouslydon’t know the amount of hardwork and dedication that it takesto be a student athlete? Well,Pete, let me just tell you then, soyou can have a little research foryour apology letter. What I amgoing to do is run you through mytypical day, mind you now, we arein the off-season, which isn’tnearly as grinding as the actualfootball season, and maybe youwill change your mind about howmuch “time you are wastingcheering on people who are play-ing sports here.”

A typical day for me starts witha wake-up bright and early at6:30 a.m. for an early morningrun. This workout consists of allkinds of fun exercises that make

me a better athlete, allwhile the regular studentmight be just rolling over inbed and starting to dream

about breakfast in three morehours. We end that at about 7:45a.m., just in time for some of usto head off to 8:00 class or for thelucky ones to run home and get abite to eat, before going to classfor a full academic day. After ourlast class of the day, we get tohustle right back over to our sec-ond home known as Alex NemzekHall to hit the weight room for anhour and a half. Also, the liftsthat we are doing are not fun,body building, beach boy, ESPNBodyShaping lifts, these aresquats, cleans, push-jerks, three-way lunges and any other excitingnew lifts that our trainers canthink of to better us as athletes.This typically takes me untilabout 5:30 p.m. to finish. Then,because I am one of the luckyones, who doesn’t have to have ajob to survive, I can go home andeat. However, many of my friendswould head off to work until 10p.m. or so. Somewhere in here,we also find time to do the home-work and projects that everyother student is required to do. Ifyou want to talk about how hard

Fellow studentsmust now tradebooks for guns

Last week, MSUM lost a few good men and womento the call of duty.

As local National Guard units alerted its membersof the possibility of being shipped out, no onethought it would be this soon.

As our classmates dropped out of school, returnedtheir books and prepared to put their lives on holdfor a year or more, we watched with a feeling ofsinking hearts as the reality of war for our genera-tion began to hit home.

With a few exceptions, the last “real” war was inthe Persian Gulf. Most current college studentsranged from 7 to 10 years old at that time and don’tremember much beyond the repeated phrase “DesertStorm.” Everyone said that was the war for our gen-eration. Yet, here we are again.

As the nation divides into feelings of pro-war andanti-war, everyone experiences the same scenarios:mothers crying as their children leave, couples say-ing good-bye without knowing the future and thefear that this could be the final good-bye.

Throughout our lives, we’ve learned about the warsfaced by the United States. We hear about the mil-lions killed during World Wars I and II. We feel themystical romantic notion of Vietnam, college riotsand the hippies’ slogans of “Peace” and “Make love,not war” from the 1960s.

But these are just events in textbooks. Things tostudy and be tested on. We learn the battles, theleaders and how women stepped in. We watch thewar movies and see people killed and perhaps aromance put to the test. Yet, somehow, the reality ofthose times still cannot be completely captured.

Until last week, President George W. Bush’s quarrelwith Iraq seemed to be his own little game. Mostlikely, no one thought this would reach to thedepths of Fargo-Moorhead. Now that it has, whatcan we – the average people – do?

Suggestions for a campus anti-war rally wouldwork for promoting school unity and awareness, cer-tainly. But otherwise, such an event will have noeffect on the real situation. MSUM students will stillbe absent from campus.

What the campus can do is continue to make thesestudents feel like their lives are not completelyaltered and like they’re still part of the university.Make an effort to keep in contact with friends andacquaintances. Send them care packages or mentionwhat’s happening at MSUM.

While our nation’s military is out being all they canbe with a “we can” attitude, it’s up to us to be strongand supportive of our local military members whilethey’re away. They’re fighting the battle, yet ourencouragement and caring can go a long way inhelping the fight to win this war.

War issue hits too close to home

I’ve never been a fan of U.S.action in the Middle East, but Inever really gave much thought to

it eitherway.

That is,until lastweek, whenthe war onIraq hit tooclose tohome.

Bronson Lemer’s cell phone rang.A few minutes later, the CMUhalls filled with the sound of hisyelled expletive. His unit in theNational Guard had been put onalert.

Suddenly, my mind began torace. Would Bronson have to go towar? Would he be on the frontlines? Would he be hurt? Wouldhe be injured? Would he be ...killed?

All the images I’d seen in Time,

Life and Newsweek and all theclips I’d watched on “20/20,”“Nightline” and “World NewsTonight” rushed through myhead. Nameless corpses, dirtiedsoldiers, crying mothers, hard-ened veterans and rows of tomb-stones – could these be in myfriend’s future?

I tried to comprehend every-thing, but remained convincedthat something was wrong.Maybe it was just a readiness drilland he wasn’t really going any-where. Perhaps there was apaperwork error and it wasn’t the142nd that was supposed to becalled but the 124th?

On Jan. 21, The Forum carriedthe news about the call-up andthe TV stations all had it on thenews. It began to dawn on methat this was real. So, instead ofcoming up with reasons aboutwhy it couldn’t be real, I and therest of the Advocate staff began toformulate plans to get him out ofthe service. What if we got himdrunk and whisked him away toCanada? What if I pushed himdown a flight of stairs and hebroke his leg? Or we shot him inthe foot? What if he got mono? Wetossed around ideas and joked

about how our lives would be dif-ferent if Bronson wasn’t there.Despite our joviality, I think weall knew, deep down, that thiswas a momentous thing. Thiscould be Bronson’s last week atThe Advocate. We all felt the grav-ity of the moment, but tried topretend we didn’t. We all wantedto wake up and find we’d beendreaming.

But we weren’t. Bronson is inColorado now, his next destina-tion unknown to us, but probablysomewhere in the Mideast. And,while he assures me that there’svery little chance of it happening,I can’t help feeling that every dayhe’s away, he’s more in danger ofthe bad things from war movies -wounds, enemy prison campsand, the worst five-letter word inthe English language, death.

I’ve never been a religious per-son, but, when I think about whatmay be in store for Bronson, Ican’t help but pray that god, anygod, will protect him and thethousands of other soldiers likehim who are out there, fightingfor us. I don’t pray for a victory, Ionly pray for my friend.

I’m sure everyone knows how Ijust hate to disappoint people,especially those faithful Advocate

readers andresponders,but I didhave to goahead andquit smok-ing despiteat least oneindividual’sunfoundedbelief that Imost likelywould notquit.

While Mr.Powell (referto Jan.16th’s let-

ter to the editor) outwardlyexpressed his doubt concerningmy ability to quit smoking, I knowmany other individuals quietlyagreed with him - with good rea-son. Smokers are constantlytalking about their need or wish

to quit smoking. In fact, I haveeven quit smoking a few times inthe past, which makes provingthe fact that I have quit ad vitamaeternum (for all time) nearlyimpossible. But since time isreally the only thing that willprove I am smoke free, maybe allI can give is a small glimpse of myquitting experience.

For those who neglected to readmy previous column, my missionduring the holiday break was toquit smoking. I did accomplishmy mission and I accomplished itwith relatively few complications.

One thing that helped me to quitwas being able to constantlyassess how I was feeling.Because I had so much time tomyself, I could sit there and beginto feel my body ridding itself ofnicotine and other stuff we wouldnormally put a “Mr. Yuck” stickeron. I started to feel my lungsfunction normally and not hearthat faint but familiar rattlingsound of mucous trapped in my

trachea. Naturally, all the alonetime also allowed for frequentcravings.

Aside from my newly fierceappetite for anything edible, I did-n’t really encounter any sideeffects that made me want to runscreaming down to the gas sta-tion. Each time I had an intensecraving, I tried to inhale the mostoxygen I could and it alwaysworked for the moment. I won’tdeny that I had definite concernsabout hyperventilating, but I was

fortunate in that area. The ideaof being able to inhale that deeplyand not cough up a “lung biscuit”was rewarding enough to get methrough the cravings.

I had heard that candy and sun-flower seeds often help smokerskick the habit, but I never openedmy bag of Jolly Ranchers. I alsonever opened the box of Popsiclesmy mom bought for my “sorethroat.” It was so peculiar to methat I wasn’t having to rely on anysubstance but my own will-powerto help me quit. I definitely do notintend to suggest that quittingsmoking was easy for me. I wasjust surprised by the fact that Iwasn’t crawling into Wal-Martand begging for a free sample of anicotine patch (who sets theprices on those things anyway?).

For the first time in my life, Iwas able to solve a problem sim-ply through reflection and con-templation. I was incessantlypondering the numerous reasonsfor quitting: the putrid smell, my

health, having to encounter theunholy winter weather and hav-ing to quit every time I visit myfamily.

Perhaps the most gratifyingeffect I noticed from quitting wasa renewed ability to think clearly.Smoking constantly invaded mythoughts - I often planned partsof my day around smoking. I amfinally able to sit and read andturn the page without thinkingabout cigarettes. I can talk to mymother on the phone and nothave that nervous, shaky feelingthat I have to hang up soon so Ican go smoke.

While I don’t really recommendmy quitting smoking regimen, Ido highly recommend quitting.Use the patch, take the newlozenge, eat a ton of candy ciga-rettes – just do something. Aswith most difficult journeys, thebenefits far outweigh the struggle.

Now thatw e ’ r et h r o u g hwith thecatching up,I would liketo ramble onabout thec u r r e n tstate ofaffairs overin WestSnarr, my

place of residence. I am an advocate of the housing

department – when I call potentialstudents for the admissions officeI always positively promote thefact that freshman studentsshould live on campus at least fora year. This is my third year of on-

campus living and I’ve had arather pleasant time in the resi-dence halls. However, lately therehas been a hubbub regarding thenew residence hall-wide noisecontrol policy.

I am all for controlling noise oncampus. I mean, nobody wants tohear Creed blasting from somemoron’s stereo at 2 a.m. But I feelthe new regulations are arbitraryand impersonal. Much like lastyear’s “zero tolerance” inGrantham, the housing depart-ment is obviously attemptingover-the-top damage control forwhat they must have considereda “noisy” fall semester.

Anyone living in the residencehalls must be familiar with theposters in the halls stating thenew policy. The posters areadorned with a drawing of fivedoors, the center door is markedas the noise source.

The policy states that if any-thing can be heard from threedoors down (two because thesource door counts as the first

one) you will have a run-in withan RA.

I understand that housing offi-cials do not just pull these regu-lations out of their rectums. I’msure hours of intense researchwent into this scientific method ofdiscerning if someone is being tooloud.

My qualms with the new policycan best be explained by thisancient Chinese proverb: If aroom is creating sound, and theonly person that has a problemwith it is someone following anarbitrary testing process, is it

really too loud? How about this: if your neighbor

is being too loud, go ask them toturn it down. I understand youmight be intimidated by the fellowin the Metallica shirt who obvi-ously blasts his stereo to compen-sate for something (it rhymes withrall renis), but that’s what theduty RA’s are for.

If you don’t feel comfortable withconfrontation simply dial 2231and a duty RA will arrive to han-dle the situation anonymously. Ibelieve this is how the systemworked before the break.Obviously residents weren’t doingtheir civic duty, or they didn’treally care about the noise.

This brings up another ancientproverb passed on from mygrandpappy to my pappy to me: Ifan RA inquires about noise inyour room, and none of yourneighbors think you’re beingloud, is there a problem in theprocess? I believe so. I live in WestSnarr and it seems like the con-tractors used saltine crackers to

build the doors because I canhear my neighbor scratch him-self. I hope he doesn’t get tooitchy or he’ll be written up forsure.

If by some chance you are beingwritten up for noise, cooperateand be as nice as possible, theRA’s don’t make the rules theyjust stop any violation inprogress. Last time I checked weare all adults here and if you havea problem with the new policy youshould sign any petition you canto have the policy reviewed. Iknow a student petition will notcause immediate change, but itmay tell the housing departmentthat we, the residents (not justthe small percentage of residentsthat have time for hall councilmeetings) should decide what wedefine as “noise.”

I think of my room as my homeand it gets a little less home-yevery day.

Last time I checked, we are alladults here and if you have a

problem with the new policy youshould sign any petition you can

to have the policy reviewed.

it is during the regular season,just figure in the same stuff butwith two hours of practice every-day, four hours of film and scout-ing work a week, and games onweekends, sometimes as far assix hours away. I hope that youare seeing now that we do earn

the small amount of money thatwe receive as student athletes.

I want you to ask yourself, PeteKleckner, are you willing to workthis hard, to make the sacrificesthat we do? Obviously not,because you aren’t on one ofthese teams. We are, and it is our

choice. I know that you will comeback with a statement saying, “Ifyou don’t like it, then quit!” Well,I am not complaining; I love play-ing football, and I would do it forfree, as many of the athletes onour team do. It just gets a littleold when we have to listen to

opinionated students who reallyhave no idea what they are talk-ing about, stating a bunch ofcrappy facts and convincing otherpeople who are just as uneducat-ed to go along with him. Next timeyou decide to write a letter, PeteKleckner, make sure that you

research your subject, becausefor this little paper that you havewritten, I, and every other stu-dent-athlete at MSUM give you agrade of “F.”

Though still in the pre-productionphases of an independent film, MSUMsenior Brady Daley is already looking for-ward to writing the credits.

The co-producer and director of “Hush,”a feature movie that will require about 75people as actors, crew members and ex-tras said this is the most involved filmhe’s helped produce.

PrairieTrash ProductionsProduction for the movie is possible be-

cause of a company founded by Daleyand MSUM graduate Benjamin Gil-Solheim called PrairieTrash Productions.The company is based in Seattle, whereGil-Solheim lives and Daley plans tomove after graduating this spring.

The production company’s name“PrairieTrash” is meant to be ironic,Daley said.

“A lot of people think people from thisarea aren’t really as artistic and we

wanted to prove that’s false,” Daley said.Daley said he and Gil-Solheim wanted

to film a movie in Fargo-Moorhead to givesomething back to the community andMSUM.

“There are a lot of talented people inthis area,” Daley said. “We thought it’d becool to give students an opportunity todo something semi-professional.”

‘Hush’Gil-Solheim wrote “Hush,” which is

about Rachel, a 20-something womanwho works as a photographer.

Throughout the film, the audience getsa peak into the abusive relationship withRachel’s boyfriend and the lives of char-acters surrounding her.

“Hush” features about 30 characters,many of whom the audience will be ableto identify with, Daley said.

Although it should be easy to find col-lege-age actors in Fargo-Moorhead, Daleysaid it may be hard to find actors to fillroles of people ages 30 to 50.

Production manager JenniferHasbargen said ac-tors and crew mem-bers aren’t paid,but they will receivea percentage of anyprofits.

The estimatedbudget for the filmis $10,000, Daleysaid.

Sophomore film studies studentEric Peterson isworking as assis-tant director for thefilm. Although he’s

worked on small film projects, Petersonsaid this is his first professional project.

Peterson encourages everyone with aninterest in acting to come to auditions.

“How often does something like thiscome to this area?” Peterson said. “If you’re interested in acting, you’d bedumb not to show up.”

Senior and production designer AmyAnderson said working with the film is agood addition to any film student’s re-sume.

Daley said previous experience isn’t re-quired.

“If you show up and you’re good, but y-ou’ve never done anything before, we’lltake you,” he said.

Local production company searches for actors for upcoming movie ‘Hush’

For any true music fan, the process ofanticipating an album release is practi-cally synonymous with a disturbing,

lurking premonitionthat (knock on wood)the release you’vebeen pining after forthe last six months isgoing to producesymptoms not totallyunlike diphtheriaonce you actually getyour mitts on it. Butat the same time,those same fanswouldn’t dream of abandoning someshred of optimism; so

in the spirit of grand expectations, let’sjump in the water and hope like hellsome kid doesn’t pee in the pool.

It would be difficult to look toward anew year without first examiningwhether or not the latest musical trendswill continue to play after dominatingthem our speakers so incessantly in thepast. 2003 then, by default, becomes themicroscopic lens through which the in-dustry will watch the now chic “garagerock” genre, and document whether itdies or manages to continue growing.

Recent heirs of the backlash the Hiveswill likely take center stage to discover ifthey can cook up a successful follow upto “Hate To Say I Told You So,” whileCraig Nicholls and the Vines will attemptto crawl from under Kurt’s shadow andput their rolls of bills where their mouthsare. The two bands that seem to have themost promise in pulling through un-scathed are the Strokes (who have de-buted several songs live lately, includingthe catchy-as-herpes and wonderfully ti-tled, “Meet Me in the Bathroom”) and theWhite Stripes, whose new record,“Elephant,” due in April, has spawned

much buzz, including the newest rumorthat it will feature a guest spot by BobDylan himself.

The new thing many are estimating tobe pushed to the forefront, well ... isn’t sonew at all. Punk is expected to resurge ina mammoth way, and all we can do ispray that some of the following, well-de-serving names will be popping up along-side that of New Found Glory (while, Godhelp us, they don’t descend to saidband’s level).

Your winners of the most-likely-to-live-up-to-expectations award are Chicago’sAlkaline Trio, whose new record, “GoodMourning,” has been slated for a May re-lease and is projected to once againshowcase their reputation as being themost clever of the litter with new songssuch as “Donner Party (All Night)” and“Every Thug Needs a Lady.” VendettaRed, whose major label debut, “Betweenthe Never and the Now,” is due out inJune, is being hailed as “the Who ofpunk rock:” Rancid finally returned tothe studio with producer Brett Gurewitz,to helm their sixth studio album; MeFirst and the Gimme Gimmes, the punksuper group who specialize solely inbeing the best cover band in the country,are planning a disc chock-full of R&Btunes; and a virtual plethora of otherbands have new records on the way, in-cluding NOFX, Leftover Crack, theSuicide Machines, and FabulousDisaster.

And if 2003 is to be known for anythingelse, it might very well be as the year old,reliable artists explored new horizons —the most long-awaited and drooled afterbeing Chino Moreno of the Deftones(whose new album is also due out thisspring) finally unveiling his ambient,“Kid A”-esque new group, Team Sleep.

Also slated for release are records bythe Fire Theft (featuring three members

of Sunny Day Real Estate), Eat the Day(boasting Wes Borland, arguably LimpBizkit’s only strong point before he leftthe band entirely), Year of the Rabbit (thenew group orchestrated by Failure/Onmastermind Ken Andrews), the MarsVolta (with the two members of At theDrive In not in Sparta), Billy Corgan’sjust released Zwan record and Zack de laRocha’s solo debut.

Looking for more? Also on the calendarfor release sometime this year are newventures from Radiohead, Outkast,Poison the Well, Blood Brothers, Jane’sAddiction, Hey Mercedes, Eels,Zebrahead, Desaparecidos, SeanLennon, Ween, Society’s Finest, Reggieand the Full Effect, Marilyn Manson,Paul Westerberg, A Perfect Circle, RivalSchools, Steven Malkmus, Iggy Pop, IceCube, Green Day, the Beta Band, Fluf,Noam Chomsky, Nick Cave and the BadSeeds, the New Pornographers, Cold andGarrison.

And with a little luck, some of themmight just deliver.

A new photography exhibit brought bythe University of Minnesota and theMcKnight Foundation Artist Fellowshipfor Photographers program is being dis-played in the Center for the Arts untilFeb. 6.

The exhibition which is administeredby the University of Minnesota’sDepartment of Art, is funded by theMcKnight Foundation of Minneapoliswho since 1982 has awarded fellowshipsto photographers.

According to George Slade, program di-rector of the University ofMinnesota/McKnight FoundationPhotography Fellowships, a panel ofthree experts from outside Minnesotachooses the photography fellows.

“I like to arrange panels that have amixture of practitioners and astute ob-servers of the medium of photography.It’s also important that the panel has awide embrace of the medium, and a col-lectively open mind about the work theyare seeing in the review,” Slade said.

In 2001, five photographers wereawarded fellowships of $25,000.

Thomas Rose focuses his work aroundfragments of architecture.

“I am drawn to the ambiguous and thearbitrary aspect of memory,” Rose said.

Patrick Kelley focuses his work withinphotographic, linguistic, and naturalphenomena with use of high tech toolsand digital manipulation.

Jeff Krueger documents the history oftrees.

Paul Shambroom follows an earlier se-ries on nuclear sites.

Jeff Millikan, a professor of Art at theUniversity Of Minnesota, uses studioscenes to create a unique “camera ob-scura” or “little darkroom”.

Today (Thursday), Millikan will give apresentation on his work at 6 p.m. in FoxRecital Hall.

With tension mounting and a matchhanging in the balance, Mitch Jacksonshowed no signs of apprehension beforehis 141-pound con-test Jan 23.

He was at centerstage, facing thenation’s seventh-ranked wrestlerJeremy Roe of SouthDakota StateUniversity, Brookings,at home.

Expectations swelledon the Afton, Minn., native, as the Dragonshad won three consecutive matches, build-ing a 12-10 lead against the No. 7Jackrabbits.

He was in a perfect position to earn a

three-point decision; ahead 4-3 with lessthan a minute remaining in the match.

But Roe wasn’t conceding defeat andhis desperate, but decisive move with 20seconds remaining snapped MSUM’smomentum.

Roe scrambled to tie the match with atwo-point take down and eventuallydefeated Jackson 7-5 in overtime, help-ing the Jackrabbits thwart MSUM’supset bid with a 19-16 victory.

“I think it was the turning point of thematch,” said SDSU coach Jason Liles ofthe match at 141.

“They’ve been in [overtime] situationsmore than we have this year,” MSUMhead coach John Sterner said. “Wehaven’t had that much experience inovertime. But I think Mitch learned onething: it was really close and he’s got tolearn he’s got just as much of a chanceas the other guy.”

Down 5-4 after Roe’s two-point take-down with 25 seconds remaining,Jackson’s only hope was a one-pointescape. Pinned toward the center of themat, with a vocal crowd of 75 on theirfeet, Jackson frantically tried to escape.

He was nearly free of Roe’s grasp, buthis momentum had brought him danger-ously close to the circle’s end line. Withone second remaining and a foot stillinside the ring, Jackson was given a one-point escape — to the dismay of SDSU’scoaching staff.

But Roe was the aggressor in overtime,recording a take down in the sudden-death extra session.

“I just went as hard as I could, but heshot before I did,” said Jackson of theovertime session. “He went for it and Ididn’t. It was a good match.”

Swim team overboardDragons falter in prestigious invitational

Although the Dragon swim anddive team took a disappointinglast place at the University ofWisconsin, Stevens PointInvitational last weekend, sever-al swimmers kept the meet com-petitive with top performances.

With 11 women’s teams com-peting, including top teams St.Cloud (Minn.) State Universityand Carleton College, Northfield,Minn., assistant coach SteveWrangham said involvement inthe meet was crucial.

“At our conference meet, they’llswim the same events twice perday, so it’s important that we getto these bigger meets and learnwhat it feels like to compete forthree days straight,” Wranghamsaid.

Junior Rachel Riopel, MSUM’shighest-point earner, finishedseventh in the 200-yard back-stroke and eighth in the 100backstroke. Senior ChristinaWavrin claimed 14th in the 200breaststroke and 15th in the 100breaststroke.

Two other Dragon relays fellshort of the top 16. The 800 freerelay team (Fisher, Wavrin,freshman Kirby Majerus andsophomore Laura Williams) andthe 400 free relay team (Riopel,Rhode, Fisher and Williams)both came in with 17th-placefinishes.

“We were disappointed that wedidn’t have many lifetime besttimes, but everyone was swim-ming hard,” Wrangham said.“Sometimes you end up a littlebit off your best times.”

Wrangham said excitement isbuilding as the Dragons’ twofavorite meets are coming up.MSUM will have a home dualmeet against Concordia at 1 p.m.Saturday and the conferencemeet in Springfield, Mo., will bethe following weekend.

“Both meets have been verysuccessful in past seasons, withalmost the entire team swim-ming personal best times at oneor both,” Wrangham said. “[We]invite all ... to the home meetagainst rival Concordia. Themeet promises to be one of themost exciting of the season.”

Despite a layoff from competi-tion throughout winter break,the Dragons didn’t concede apin or technical fall to SDSU,which had five nationallyranked wrestlers, includingthree-time All-American TylerJones at 184.

MSUM senior Nate Hansenearned the most lopsided victo-ry of the contest — a 13-4 deci-sion at 165, which gave theDragons a respectable loss intheir first dual since Dec. 11.

“South Dakota State justcame back from the nationalduals and they’re nationallyranked themselves,” Sternersaid. “They’ve had maybe fivecompetitive outings beforehandand the thing they had on uswas conditioning.”

Bryan Cowdin, ranked No. 7at 174, earned a 7-3 decisionagainst sophomore EricHageman, giving SDSU an early3-0 lead.

Ranked No. 8 at 184 earlier inthe season, junior RyanKopiasz squared off againstJones, who entered the matchranked No. 1 in Division II withan 8-1 record.

In the opening 20 seconds ofthe first period, Kopiaszappeared to have a take down,but the points weren’t awarded

and Kopiasz’s window of oppor-tunity was slammed shut.Jones kept Kopiasz in a tightclasp most of the match, earn-ing a 5-1 decision.

At 197, junior Cody Ranzfavored his taped right wristmost of the match, whichforced him to take an injurytimeout at the end of the sec-ond period. He eventually lostin an 11-3 decision to TimBoldt, ranked No. 5 in DivisionII.

Down 10-0 after three match-es, senior heavyweight DonHoonhorst ignited a three-match winning streak with a 5-3 decision.

Sophomore Mark Twardyreceived a forfeit at 125pounds, which led to juniorDesmond Radunz’s 3-2 victoryat 133.

In a recurring theme,Radunz’s match went down tothe wire.

Ahead 3-2 with five secondsremaining, Radunz was givenan injury timeout after beingpoked in the eye — a mere sec-ond after SDSU’s Kris Dozarkwas in position for a take down.Radunz re-entered the matchand solidified the decision, clos-ing the gap to 10-9.

“[The close match againstSDSU not only gives us confi-dence, but it gives us the ideathat we can compete nationallywith anybody,” Sterner said.

Home stampede

The Dragon women’sbasketball players arefinally hitting their stride,doing so during theirmost important games ofthe season.

The Dragons (9-9, 6-3NSIC) handed Wayne(Neb.) State College anembarrassing loss Friday,defeating the Wildcats 72-51.

On Saturday, theDragons beat anothertough team, SouthwestState University,Marshall, Minn., by ascore of 72-60.

There was a feelingaround campus that thisweekend would be the onewhere the Dragon womenput up or shut up. Theformer proved to be thecase.

“I think it’ll be a goodweekend for us,” junior cen-ter Liz Klukas said beforethe team took the court thisweekend. “I think it’ll comeout good for us in the end.”

Klukas’ statements wereprophetic as the womenshowed the NSIC whatthey’re capable of whenthey’re clicking.

Wayne State felt the bruntof MSUM’s solid play.Friday’s contest was neverclose.

The Wildcats, tied for firstin the NSIC coming in, waswithout star forward KarenHochstein. She suffered anankle injury in practice ear-lier in the week, forcing her

out of the team’s action thisweekend.

Jackie Doerr sparked theDragons early. The sopho-more guard, who had shot acombined 5-for-20 from thefloor last weekend, couldn’tmiss this weekend. She went4-for-4 on 3-pointers in thecontest, finishing with 16points.

Her sister, Katie Doerr, hada strong performance again,posting her ninth double-double of the season. KatieDoerr compiled 15 points and13 rebounds before leavingwith six minutes remaining,the game all but over.

“It was a huge win for us,”

Jackie Doerr said, addingthe team has already lostone conference home gameso far. “As a team, we allcame ready to play.”

MSUM, recognizednationally for theirrebounding prowess, helda 54-29 edge on the glass.

Klukas had 13 pointsand eight boards, whilejunior Janna Davis cameoff the bench and eludedthe score sheet with agreat game.

The 6-foot-3 Davis fin-ished with just five pointsand seven rebounds, butblocked three shots andaltered a number of others.

“Our bench play hasbeen really great,” JackieDoerr said. “It helps thestarters out when peopleoff the bench can come inand contribute the sameas the starters.”

Saturday’s contest wascloser, as the Dragons hadto crawl back from an early

deficit.Southwest State led 24-14

in the first half, but missedtheir final 11 shots of thehalf, allowing the Dragons totake the lead at halftime 27-24.

The two teams went backand forth to start the second,until MSUM went on a 13-1run to take a 53-41 lead latein the second half.

Southwest State, a strongoffensive team, struggledmost of the game, shooting35 percent from the floor.

He said the changefrom Moorhead StateUniversity to Minnesota StateUniversity Moorhead has beenlengthy and costly as far aschanging signs and othermaterials. Therefore, thetagline will not be added untila more convenient time.

“As far as I’m concerned, wehave already done what theboard was advising we do,”Barden said. “If there needs tobe some little additional thing... certainly we’re not going tospend a lot of money on it.”

Barden said the tagline willbe added to university materi-als, such as stationery, onceother materials are used up.Eventually, MSUM will alsoneed to add exterior identifi-cation that shows the univer-sity is a member of theMinnesota State Colleges andUniversities system.

“What they’re trying to getaway from is ‘MnSCU,’”Barden said. “‘MnSCU’, formost people, doesn’t meananything. So somewhere oncampus, in time, we need tocome up with a way of indi-cating Minnesota StateColleges and Universities.Hopefully it will be a symbol.”

Peter Hartje, student senatepresident, said student senatepassed a motion last fall tonot support the procedures,as did the Minnesota StateUniversity StudentAssociation.

“There are a lot of schoolswho feels that this kind ofimpedes on each university’sand school’s autonomy, espe-cially considering we wentthrough a name change threeyears ago to be more in linewith the system,” Hartje said.

He said MnSCU listened tostudent input and developeda compromise to includeexemptions for schools withother means of MnSCU identi-fication.

“I was really happy with theway student senate wentabout it and the thought theyput in it,” Hartje said. “Beinga part of a system is nice, butI don’t get pride out of being amember of MnSCU. I’m happyto go to our school becauseit’s MSUM.”

Around 11 a.m., CampusSecurity and Moorhead policedecided there was no danger.Owens never evacuated andeveryone kept working.

“It didn’t seem like a crediblecircumstance and it wasn’tdirectly related to our office,”Tandberg said of the recordsoffice.

“I told the staff if you are inthe least bit uneasy, staggeryour lunch so you are safelyaway [at 1 p.m.]. I ordered asandwich and ate it right atmy desk. I have confidence inlocal security and Moorheadpolice,” Tandberg said.

Tandberg wasn’t the onlyone who stayed around.President Roland Barden alsoate lunch at his desk andnever left the building untilthe hour was up. He was the

one who made the final deci-sion about not evacuating,Pehler said.

“The people who helpedmake the decision [aboutevacuating] were there duringthat hour. This is importantbecause you know the peoplewho are making the decisionsare going to truly stand by.

“When making the decision,you look at the situation moreseriously. You don’t get flip-pant because you’re going tobe there, too,” Pehler said.

“We’re not going to saythere’s nothing to worry aboutand then go somewhere else.”

The case has been turnedover to the Moorhead PoliceDepartment.

An investigation is inprogress to determine theidentity of the letter writer,said Moorhead Sgt. BradPenas, who was part of thesearch.

“People fought before me. People are going to fightafter me. It’s just keeping the nation alive.”
