Thanks to the work of Eagle Scout candidate, Peter Rusinak and his Dad John, we now have a Peace Labyrinth right next to the patio in our backyard. A Peace Labyrinth offers a path for meditation and spiritual reflection. This ancient form of stress relief is becoming popular all around the country. It has been reported that walking a labyrinth leads us past our intellect to a deeper place within. People who use a labyrinth report greater insight, creativity, relaxation, less stress, increased happiness, connectedness, balance and wellbeing. By the end of June, the flowers and shrubbery will be planted about the new labyrinth. We welcome you to use this new outdoor space to support your personal journey for peace. Summer Safety Tips for Seniors from the American Red Cross

Slow down. Strenuous activity in extremely hot weather adds strain to the heart. If you must be active, choose the coolest part of the day.

Take regular breaks when engaging in physical activity on warm days.

Stay cool. If you don’t have air conditioning, spend time at an air-conditioned shopping center, senior center, and library or movie theater.

Plan outdoor activities in the cooler early morning or evening hours. Stay in the shade. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and umbrella to protect yourself from sun overexposure. Use U/V skin protection.

Stay cool in your home. If you must be at home without air conditioning: Stay in the coolest part of the house—usually the lowest floor. Close curtains or shades on sunny windows.

Stay hydrated. Carry water or juice with you and drink continuously even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body.

Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increase metabolic heat. Sandwiches, salads, fresh fruit and vegetables are good choices.

Dress for the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

Discuss with your doctor how medications and/or chronic conditions may affect your body's ability to manage heat. Take the heat seriously. Rapid heartbeat, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, headache, chest pain, fatigue, clam-my skin, mental changes or breathing problems are warning signs that you should seek immediate medi-cal attention. Frail seniors who live alone should be looked in on often during hot weather by family members, neighbors or friends. Adapted from American Red Cross in Greater New York.

Medicare denies payment for health care you have already received

Medicare stops covering services that you are receiving

Medicare pays a different amount than you believe it should

Medicare drug plan denies coverage of your medication

A Very Happy July 2015 birthday to our many visitors and volunteers at the

Senior Center! Thanks for coming in and being part of the community here!

Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy. To do nothing and have it count for something. To lie in the

grass and count the stars. To sit on a branch and study the clouds.

Veterans’ News July, 2015

In order to make it easier for Veterans and their families to receive their GI Bill benefits where they choose, the VA Secretary has waived the provisions of the Choice Act, section 702, signed in 2014. This bill sought to disapprove education programs at public institutions for Post 9/11 and Montgomery GI Bill benefits if a school charges Veterans tuition and fees in excess for the resident rate for terms beginning after July 1, 2015. It is taking extended time for states to implement the changes necessary to be compliant with the Act. The limited waiver by the Secretary covers programs that are not in compliance for all terms beginning prior to January 1, 2016. This will provide time for all programs to become compliant. In general, the resident rate provisions of the Choice Act covers Veterans as well as their family members using the GI Bill who live in a state where they are attending school and who enrolled within 3 years of the Veteran’s qualifying discharge. To remain approved, schools must charge tuition and fees at the resident rate. For more information go to: www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/702.asp. If you have questions about your military/Veteran’s benefits, contact Mike Thorp,

Veterans’ Service Officer for Duxbury, located at the Senior Center,

781-934-5774 X 5740.
