Leon won the Dux for 2016 by receiving an Australian Tertiary Admission Rating (ATAR) of 99.85. The highest the school has seen so far. He did this by earning 4 Merits in Research Project, Chemistry, Physics and Math Studies. An A for Specialist Math, a most difficult subject and remarkably an A for Stage 2 Biology while in year 11. This amazing score provides many opportunities and Leon is now studying a Bachelor of Engineering specialising in Petroleum Chemistry with Honours. This is just the beginning. With Leon’s commitment to study and school life, he was a worthy candidate for the Principal’s Scholarship valued at $5,000. Sandra Moran (Principal of HHS 2016) nominated him and he won. Still, why stop here. Leon then applied for the SANTOS Scholarship through University of Adelaide, Australian School of Petroleum. This scholarship has a total value of $40,000. He won! Not only does this provide monetary assistance, Leon will also receive first preference for any internships that come up at SANTOS. With a total of $45,000 in scholarships, Leon tells me he plans to set up a savings account and use the earnings to pay his university fees upfront. He is hoping to come out of tertiary education with minimal debt. Hard work really does pay off. Leon has maintained a strong relationship with Henley high School and has offered to assist our current students by providing study advice and possibly tutoring. Leon won the Dux for 2016 by receiving an Australian Tertiary Admission Rating (ATAR) of 99.85. The highest the school has seen so far. CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY 2017Every year Australia wide, hundreds of thousands of Australi-ans clean their local environment by collecting and removing rubbish in their local areas. Clean-Up Australia Day inspires and empowers communities such as Henley High School, to clean, fix and conserve our environment. Officially, Clean-Up Australia Day was held on the 5th of March. On the 6th of March, all Middle School students took to the streets to further conserve our local area.

The opportunity to clean our local area allowed the five Sub Schools to work in teams and collect as much rubbish as they could for their Personal Learning Plan Citizenship capability and for points towards the Middle School Shield. Students worked well to collect every bit of rubbish in sight. They were supported by their PLP teachers, lesson 1 teach-ers, and Sub School Managers.

In the end, the Middle School collected numerous bags full of rubbish from the streets and the beach. Points for the most rubbish collected were allocated towards the Middle School Shield as follows:

Mawson – 5 points

Lowitja – 4 points

Florey – 3 points

Oliphant – 2 points

Mitchell – 1 point

MIDDLE SCHOOL SAUSAGE SIZZLE AND PARENT EVENINGOn Tuesday night of Week 3, the 14th of February, almost 400 Middle School students and parents attended a Sausage Sizzle in the Middle School courtyard. The barbecue, cooked by our amazing staff, gave parents the opportunity to meet their child’s Mentor Teacher and Sub School Manager. Feedback from the parents on the night was extremely positive. The Mentor teachers appreciated the opportunity to meet parents early in the school year and establish these important relationships. Thank you all of the teachers who helped cook 400 sausages and to all of the Mentors who hosted information sessions for the parents. A big thank you also to the SSOs who helped behind the scenes in preparation for the event. We hope to continue developing positive relationships with our students and parents / caregivers throughout the year.

4 HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 1 | WEEK 4

HENLEY HIGH STUDENTS VIETNAM ADVENTUREOn December 1st 2016, twelve Henley High School students and 2 teachers headed off to Vietnam for a 3 week trip of a lifetime. The actual trip started by flying into Northern Vietnam (Hanoi) and ended by flying out of Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City), but the real exciting part of the trip was what happened in the middle! In fact, everything that we did, where we went, where we stayed and how we got there was decided by the students.

This unique student leadership experience, through ‘Antipodeans Abroad’, actually started 12 months before we even stepped foot on out first aeroplane. Over this time students discussed and decided on a range of important goals we wanted to achieve, to make the most out of this once in a life time opportunity. One of these goals was to raise money throughout the year to be distributed to worthwhile causes and organisation over in Vietnam. Students saw first-hand the impact these donations had on these communities, this could not have been achieved without the help and support of the entire school community in contributing donations to quiz nights, buying raffle tickets and even eating those hot dogs and chips during lunchtimes.

So, in brief, this is what we did…

After one night in Hanoi we headed to a rural village near Mai Chau, where we would call home for a week to build a ‘kitchen’ for an old couple who were in dire need (in fact they had been waiting 2 years). As a team we mixed mortar, laid bricks, rendered and completed the build well ahead of schedule. It wasn’t all work in the village, we did get invited to a local wedding and sang some karaoke for the bride and groom, not too sure if they love the ‘One Direction’ song choice though?

The following day, we walked an hour to a local school and we donated, using our fundraising money, a range of resources they were in need of. This included, two sets of PE uniforms, soccer balls, 20 school chairs, a laser printer and a ‘tug-of-war’ rope. We spent the remainder of the afternoon teaching the local children and range of English based lessons and then they destroyed us in a game of soccer (unfair home court advantage when they play in bare feet).

We then proceeded to one of the highlights of our trip, an overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay in our very own boat. It was a tough couple of days eating gourmet meals, swimming in the bay and even squid fishing at night.

The first of two overnight train trips followed as we transited from North to South, enjoying the sights, culture and cooking schools of Hoi An and Da Nang along the way, at least the parts of Hoi An that weren’t flooded.

Our last destination and departure point was Hoi Chi Minh City. While there we visited the ‘Chu Chi Tunnels’, the ‘Mekong Delta’ and of course the local markets for the final bits of shopping.

The last day in Vietnam was pretty special, we firstly woke up early to join the locals with their daily 6am workout in the park. We then visited a local (and global) children’s foundation, the ‘Christina Noble Foundation’. Here we played with the local children and saw first-hand what the foundation had done for families and children affected by the impact of the ‘American/Vietnam War’. Without hesitation the team decided that we would donate the remainder of our fundraising money, even individual student’s donated the rest of their personal fund as well…it was a very special moment that we all will never forget!

We returned to Adelaide on the 22nd December, welcomed by families and friends…eager to hear about all our adventures.

We will be starting to promote the next ‘Antipodeans trip’ later this semester, which will take place in December 2018…so if you would like to create your own adventure and be part of a trip of a lifetime please come to our information sessions when advertised.

Lastly, I would just like to say, it was an absolute pleasure and privilege to share these experience with these student (or young adults), I valued every moment and learnt as much from them as hopefully they learnt from me. Thank you.

MIDDLE SCHOOL HOMEWORK CLUBLast year, as an initiative by the Sub School Managers, a Homework Club was set up on Thursdays, after school, for Middle School students in the Lowitja common room from 3.15-4pm. The Middle School will be continuing with this again this year, starting from Week 3.

Homework Club is an opportunity for students to get help with, or work on, assignments, or complete set homework. It is particularly helpful for students who do not have internet access at home. Please encourage students to come along.

STUDENT MEDICAL INFORMATIONStudent Services are currently in the process of collecting updated student medical information for the 2017 school year. All student Health Care Plans need to be updated every 12 months unless otherwise stated in written form by a doctor. (E.g. Extended review date entered onto student’s updated health care plan.)

Emails will also be going home shortly to parents of students who have medication stored at the school. This will be to let you know if your student’s medication is out of date. We ask if parents could please replace any out of date medication as soon as practical, but do understand that doctors’ appointments are sometimes needed and may take time. If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact student services.

6 HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 1 | WEEK 4

GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCEOn the 20th of February, the Student Executive Team attended the GRIP Student Leadership Conference which was held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. The conference was practical, inspirational and enjoyed by thousands of other student leaders from all over Adelaide. Many schools travelled long distances to attend the event and we noticed schools from country areas such as Port Lincoln and Victor Harbor. It was a day filled with engaging speakers and interactive activities that further developed our very own leadership skills.

Many times throughout the day, we had the opportunity to engage with other students from schools across South Australia. An activity in particular required us to think of a mascot for an agricultural school. We were told that the school logo was a tree but that was the only information we were given in order to design a mascot for the school. We needed to use our imagination and work in small teams to come up with what were believed to be a suitable mascot prototype. We then had to converse with other students from different schools to share our ideas and promote our strongest idea. This allowed us to understand the need to listen and give our own thoughts whilst we worked as a team to reach a common

goal. We learnt how to problem solve and to compromise whilst still being able to achieve the goal that we had set out to achieve.

Overall, we learnt many practical ways to think and work in regards to overcoming the challenges of leadership and how to turn an idea into an action. We were taught how the journey of every leader will involve challenges of some kind. The workshop explored the challenges faced in the form of people, places and personal struggles. We learnt practical ways to show resilience so that challenges can be embraced and become a positive experience throughout our journey as young leaders.

Upholding the trust of others was another topic that was spoken of multiple times throughout the day. We learnt that trust is earnt, never give up, and that responsibility in leadership means to accept the duty to contribute to assist others and follow through on goals that are set. In closing, a key idea that we took away from the experience was that leaders must have the ability to inspire others to follow them to really experience the true essence of leadership in schools.

STUDENT EXECUTIVE NEW STUDENT MORNING TEAOn Thursday of Week 5, the Student Executive organised a ‘Welcome’ Morning Tea in the Senior Centre for all the students who are new to Henley High School in 2017. The aim of this morning tea was to not only introduce Student Executive to the students, but to also provide a chance for the students to get to know each other and make new friends. During morning tea, members of Student Executive introduced themselves to the large group. Student Executive indicated they would help new students adapt to their new learning environment. We also sought feedback from the new students to help solve any concerns they had. Members of Student Executive also chatted with the new international students and asked them about school life and what they think about their new life in Australia. It was a quite successful event and we look forward to keeping in touch with these students as they continue to transition into Henley High.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2017On Tuesday 21st February over 500 students made their way down to the State Aquatic Centre at Marion for our Swimming Carnival for 2017. Once again staff and students were impressed with the facilities and it is a bit of a buzz being in the marshalling areas used by Olympians past and present.

This year the program was full, with four novelty events being run inbetween the more traditional events. Points were allocated to every swimmer in all events, and three shields were up for grabs: Middle School, Senior School and Overall. The atmosphere in the centre was excellent with the crowd in House colours cheering on the competitors, and the cheering home of the close finishes was a particular highlight! INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDENT EXECUTIVE TEAMStudent Executive is a decision making body at Henley High School. This year, the group consists of13 students across year levels 9 to 12. The group will be working closely with Vanessa Porritt (Senior School Coordinator), Jade Ambler (Middle School Coordinator) and Principal Eddie Fabijan to run events and fundraisers for the school. Much like a Student Voice Council, the students are available to discuss matters with any student who is concerned with an aspect of Henley High School. Student Executive will support their peers in resolving such issues through collaboration with the team. Each of the 13 students in Student Executive had similar reasons for joining the group last year when they went through an extensive application process. The students would like to introduce themselves to their peers and the wider community with the entries below. If you are a Henley High student, please consider these students when you need to address any concerns throughout the year.Jade Ambler | Middle School Coordinator

MEET RUBYI’m Ruby Hickman. I am in year 10 from the Oliphant sub-school. I am a part of SSP surf, I race triathlons during summer and I enjoy going to the beach and surfing. I chose to be in Student Executive as I wanted to be involved in organising events at our school that benefit other students and teachers. By applying for Student Executive, I am hoping to gain some new leadership and public speaking skills and use these to help to make the school a better place for all students. I was a part of Student Executive last year and thoroughly enjoyed my experience so therefore I reapplied to extend my skills.

MEET SARAHMy name is Sarah Beagley, I joined Student Executive because I want to further my Leadership skills and contribute positively to the school community. I am currently in Year 10 in Lowitja sub-school. This year I’d like to promote all the different coloured ribbon days and organise more events that raise money for charity.

MEET NAOMIMy name is Shengxian (Naomi) Wang and I am a Year 11 Chinese international student from Lowitja sub-school. l am on the Student Executive for Henley High School this year as well as in 2016. I am glad that I can join this community to represent international students. As I am one of the international students, I would like to try my best to support and help international students adapt to the new learning environment. My goal on the Student Executive for 2017 is to run a multi-cultural event in our school that can help to bridge the gap between local students and international students.

MEET MACKENZYMy name is Mackenzy Richardson and I am a Year 10 student in Florey. I joined Student Executive because I would like to expand my leadership skills and help improve the school community. This year in Student Executive, I would like to help the school donate or raise money for multiple non-profit organisations, promote internationalism within the community, connect with the wider school community, and initiate relationships between the year levels. I would also like to focus on bullying and its affects. I would like to organise a forum for guest speakers to discuss this issue and share strategies to overcome such hardships.

MEET GEORGIAMy name is Georgia Williams. I am currently a year 10 student from the Mawson sub-school. While being delighted to be a part of the Student Executive, I sincerely hope to make a difference both locally, nationally and internationally with a real focus on poverty and children’s rights. As a team and community, we will be able to conduct a food drive at a local level across the school with the ability to give back to the homeless via supporting Food Bank. This could be as small as each student donating one item from his or her own pantry. Nationally I want to be able to make a reasonable donation maybe via a casual clothes day to a national charity that the students vote upon as the most important to them. Internationally I would love to be able to create a partnership with a less fortunate school in the world and be able to raise awareness, funding and sponsorship for the children who are struggling to obtain an education.

HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 1 | WEEK 4

MEET JORDANHi, my name is Jordan Chandler and I am one of the few students chosen to represent Henley High in the Student Executive program. For those of you who don’t know me, I have a very loud, outgoing, approachable personality with a love and passion for sport. I chose to apply and partake in Student Executive to give students a voice and to make school more enjoyable for them. My goal for 2017 is to have every student say, I love going to Henley High School!

MEET KAII am Kai Neagle and I am in Year 12. I have been involved in student leadership since Year 9 and have been chosen this year to be one of two prefect representatives within Student Executive. I’ve enjoyed being part of Student Executive in previous years and I am happy to continue my work with the group and help this year through my role as a prefect. It will be a good opportunity for me to continue helping the school and I look forward to assisting the rest of Student Executive in their endeavours this year.

MEET MCKENZIEHello, my name is Mckenzie Allen and I am a Year 9 in Mitchell. I joined Student Executive to gain additional leadership skills and extend the skills I have learnt in other areas of leadership. I believe Student Executive is a driving force behind making the school a better place and a safe environment for students. I would like to continue to be involved in school events and functions throughout the year.

MEET AMYMy name is Amy Edgar. I am a year 11 student here at Henley. I am a member of Student Executive for the second time in the past 2 years. I have seen how much it has increased my confidence with public speaking, and speaking up in different situations. These are skills that I believe are important to have in life. This year I hope to improve on these skills even more and better my understanding of how people work.

MEET XINYUHello, I am Xinyu Du, a year-11 international student. I prefer people to call me Cindi. I come from Shanghai, China. I was a chief editor of a teenage newspaper that had a circulation of more than 1 million in China. I would like to improve my leadership skills, make friends, and help more students. Because I am an international student who has a similar experience with other international students, I want to give more help and mental support to the international students who have anxiety about studying and living in Adelaide. Therefore, I joined in Student Executive. I will to try my best to support international students, serve international students and assist teachers in 2017. As well as being a bridge of communication between teachers and students. Also, I plan to design and arrange more activities to promote internationalism and multiculturalism in the school.

MEET KEONI am Keon Doecke (Year 12) and this year I will work with Student Executive as a representative of the Prefects. I joined Student Executive to represent my peers and to help facilitate and implement ideas within the school and broader community. This year my main goal within Student Executive is to organise a Red Cross Blood Bus to visit the school for students and teachers to donate to this great cause.

MEET JADEHello, my name is Jade Pryor and I am part of the Student Executive team this year. I am a Year 11 from the Mawson sub school. I decided to join Student Executive in 2017 because I could see from last year’s team that it was a great way to improve my leadership skills and involve students in more school activities. My aim this year is to advocate and support the LGBT+ community within Henley High School. At Henley High we have a GSA (Gay and Straight Alliance) however not many students are aware of this group’s existence. The point of the GSA is to show support for those who identify or support those in the LGBT+ community. As an LGBT+ supporter, it is in my best interest this year to raise awareness for all students supporting equality.

MEET BETHMy name is Beth Prestwood, and I am in year 10 from the Mitchell sub-school. This year I decided to join Student Executive for a different experience, and to help improve my leadership skills. I hope to participate in many fundraising events along with making the school a better place.

Student Teacher Placement Reflection – By Anthony Salermo

Over the past three weeks, I have had the pleasure of completing my first placement for my education degree at Henley High School. It has been a wonderful experience that has intensified my passion for the career that I am striving for. Over my few weeks at Henley High, I met many amazing students and formed positive relationships with them. But for me, the students who both touched and inspired me the most were those from the SLC. Each student within the SLC is unique and beautiful in their own way, and above all, they have some of the kindest hearts I have ever seen.

A personal highlight was the cooking practical which I had the privilege of preparing and orchestrating. Each student contributed passionately and enthusiastically, the result being two mouth-watering platters of gourmet nachos that would impress even the toughest of Masterchefs’ judges.

I will deeply miss the friends I have made over these past three weeks and hope to cross paths with the lovely staff and students in the future.

I would like to thank everyone at Henley High School for such a wonderful experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Student Teacher Placement Reflection – By Nicola Meegan

I enjoyed working in the SLC and it was insightful. I could not have asked for a better environment and student-teacher placement.

SLC1 were also lucky to have pre service teacher Scarlett volunteer daily in their class. The students and staff really appreciated her help.

INTERNATIONAL VISITOR COMES TO SLCIn week two, the Executive Director of the Sunrise Cambodia/Australia Cambodia Foundation, Mr YI Soksan visited the Supported Learning Centre.

When we were in Cambodia in January Mr YI Soksan arranged for my wife and I to visit two of the Sunrise Cambodia schools. We were warmly welcomed by the staff of both schools and found that despite the geographic distance, the goals we have for our students are very similar. Our students appreciated Mr YI Soksan’s return visit and enjoyed hearing his Khmer greeting when he spoke to them at our Friday morning assembly. We learnt about the country of Cambodia, the capital city Phnom Penh and about some of the differences and similarities that students in Australia and Cambodia might experience.

MIND MATTERS AT HENLEY HIGH 2017Mind Matters is a mental health initiative for secondary schools that aims to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young people. At Henley High we recognise that the mental health and wellbeing of students is crucial in a student’s learning and achievement at school. The Mind Matters framework will help us to build our own mental health strategy to suit the priorities of our school community. Mind Matters provides school staff with blended professional learning that includes online resources, face-to-face events, webinars and support. All content has been informed by strong evidence in the area of school mental health and wellbeing. The use of Mind Matters’ comprehensive resources has mental health benefits for the entire school community – including students, families and school staff.

Mind Matters is based on the principle that the best mental health strategy is one that prevents issues from arising in the first place. For this reason Mind Matters helps schools promote positive mental health through the whole school community, and aims to prevent mental health difficulties in students by taking

steps to improve relationships and resilience. Mind Matters provides staff with practical advice and guidance so that they can support students who may be struggling with mental health difficulties in a timely and appropriate way. Promotion, prevention and early intervention are central tenets of the Mind Matters’ approach.

Continuing on from last year, the 2017 Mind Matters Action Team has already had it’s first meeting and set the wheels in motion to improve the mental health and wellbeing at our site. It consists of representatives from the teaching staff, support staff and students. We have already conducted staff surveys and will survey our students in the coming weeks. We will be creating our priorities for 2017 and beyond in our next

meeting, based on this data.

If you or your young person have an interest in this area and would like to be a part of the action team in making a difference for young people at Henley High please register your interest by emailing me at [email protected]. We will also be asking for your support as parents/caregivers to fill out a survey towards the end of the term, to gain community perspectives of how mental health and wellbeing is supported at HHS and how we can improve.

VET PATHWAYSVET Pathways for completing SACE and achieving an ATAR for tertiary study.

Did you know? VET or Vocational Education Training is not just about getting an apprenticeship.

Completing a Certificate 3 whilst at school in most cases not only provides students with an industry qualification and Stage 2 (Year 12) SACE credit but also can be counted as one of the 4 subjects required for calculating an ATAR, that important score that determines what tertiary course you may be offered and which institution will accept your enrolment.

VET Certificate 3 qualifications are completed by Henley students through our VET in Schools’ program, through study with a Registered Training Organisation such as TAFESA or Sports SA and as part of a school based traineeship. (ASBA).

The following students have successfully completed their certificate 3 qualification in 2016 and will be able if they wish, to use it as part of their ATAR or as a pathway into further training or employment.
