This year, Chartwells K12 got our Duval community involved in our food in an all-new way. We created a brand new culinary competition called Chartwells Chopped, which highlighted the amazing culinary talent in our students and in our kitchen teams!

On April 19th, four elementary school teams, and five secondary school teams competed in our Chartwells Chopped: Student Edition competition at the Publix Aprons Cooking School. The students were tasked with creating a healthy and delicious meal that could potentially be served in our school cafés. They prepared samples for our panel of judges, and were judged on the creativity, nutritional value, taste, and presentation of the dishes. Our first place team for the elementary competition was from Jacksonville

Beach Elementary, with a Ginger Chicken and Coconut Rice dish. These students each received a cookware set, apron, and chef hat. They even got the opportunity to sample their winning dish with a Chartwells Chef at a Chefs 2 School event for their school! Our secondary competition winning team was from Frank H. Peterson, with a Spicy Basil Chicken and Broccoli Avocado Alfredo. The secondary winning team of students each received a new knife set, cookware set, apron, and a $500 scholarship to a secondary institution of their choice, courtesy of Chartwells K12. In addition, versions of both of these winning meals will be served in DCPS Cafés during the 2016-2017 school year.

During our Chartwells Chopped: Professional Edition on May 3rd, four of our hourly kitchen team members were challenged to incorporate 4 mystery ingredients into appetizer and entrée dishes, and were given a specific amount of time in which to gather ingredients, prepare, and plate their creations. The dishes were judged on nutrition, taste, presentation and originality, with judges including community partners and experienced regional

chefs. The winners were as follows: Chopped Champion: Tanya Thompson of Jacksonville Heights Elementary, Chopped Runner-Up: Patrick McNamee of DCPS’ Nutrition Services Center (NSC). All contestants received brand-new cookware sets, cooking aprons, and a chef knife set. The winning contestants were also awarded $500 and $300, respectively.
