Dutchess Academy of Environmental Studies

A Model GLOBE Program School.

GLOBE at Norrie Point

• Franchise/Partner Teacher Training Site since 1996.

• Over 120 teachers trained in the Hudson Valley.

• GLOBE Protocol Video Filming site

• Home of the “MUC-athon”-- over 17% of the GLOBE Program qualitative land cover data for the world has come from Dutchess County!

• Students addressed the United Nations Sustainable Development Conference on Earth Day 1999 and the World Space Congress 2002 and the GLOBE Program Office in 2006.

What is the Academy?

The Academy was a two year, half-time turned one year,

full day, bridge program to prepare students for education

and careers in ecology and the natural sciences.

Benefits• Blend of theory knowledge and practical skills in

classroom, laboratory, and the field.

Norrie Point Environmental Site•Walking distance to river, forests, streams, wetlands, marina

•Short paddle to Esopus Island & Black Creek Preserve

Hudson River Estuary & Esopus Island

1000 acre Mills-Norrie State Park

You can’t learn about the environment

from a textbook.

You need to get outside!

• BIO 225: Environmental Measurements• The GLOBE Program (www.globe.gov)

– Apply the theory from BIO 107: Ecology to measure hydrology, soils, atmosphere, and land cover.

• Geographic Information Systems– Computer mapping using MapInfo and MultiSpec

• Natural Resource Management• Land Use Planning--local and global

• Student-Designed Field Research Project– As a class, design and execute an 8 week field research project using GLOBE

protocols.

Looking at Data

This graph displays the mean air temperature for schools in Australia (red), Benin (green), and the US (blue)

The inverse relationship between water temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO)

Chemistry Connection: Henry’s Law states the solubility of gases generally decreases with increasing temperature

The Class of 2002 investigated difference in soil moisture and temperature as a result of canopy cover

and land cover type.

The Class of 2003 investigated differences

between study plots on the

mainland and on Esopus Island and

presented their research at the

GLOBE Learning Expedition in

Croatia in July.

GLE in Croatia

2004 Senior Project

• Radiotracking Box Turtles with NYSDEC and creating a GIS database of nests, movements and hibernacula.

• Measuring Soil (PSD, pH, T) and

atmosphere (min/max T, RH) data
